HFV Explorer cannot read Virex 5.67 disk 2.

Recently today, I've bought a new copy of Virex 5.67, from a store. I wanted to preserve this piece of history (Not too many copies floating around!) by backing it up. I'm using HFV Explorer 1.3.1. It was able to read Virex Disk 1, but for Disk 2, It was a different story. HFV Explorer couldn't read it. It's highly unusual because the disk were NOT used, and were bought new. Is there a work around for this, or could Virex Disk 2 be defective? And IS it possible for me to get a floppy disk drive for the iMac I have? Any help would be appreciated.

USB floppy drives are great. I got mine on eBay for $7. It's a VST drive. It works with my Windows machine, and my iMac.

What kind of floppy disk is Disk 2? SD (400k), DD (800k), HD (1.4MB)? The SD & DD floppies both have a single small locking tab in one corner & the HD disk has the locking tab plus a cutout small square hole in the opposite corner. If the disks are SD or DD, then they won't be able to be read on a PC. Anyway, just guessing, as it being a possible reason without discounting the floppy being bad.

You can get a USB floppy drive that will run on Mac or PC. If your iMac is capable of running a native Classic Mac OS, 9.2.2 or earlier, even better. Limitations of all USB floppy drives are they cannot physically read or write to 800k Mac floppy media.

I use a TEAC brand USB floppy drive, it works fine on either Mac or PC and requires no drivers.

It doesn't say SD or DD on disk 2, but it doesn't have the other hole like on Disk 1, and it really looks like a floppy that can only be read on mac floppy drives. Well, I have lost hope, because I don't have an old Mac Se, or Plus to read Disk 2. Disk 1 shows the HD logo, so that must be the reason why HFV Explorer was able to read it. By any chance, is there a way to get a mac floppy drive to work on a pc?

No, sadly. The limitations are the same for PC's with built-in floppy drives as with USB floppy drives. 800k floppy media is not supported. HFVExplorer wouldn't have a problem with it, otherwise.

You can use any Mac with a built-in floppy drive tho', if you know of someone with one. Any Mac model from a Mac Plus to a Beige G3 and a working floppy drive will do.

Oh well, I'll have to be looking around for an old mac with a working floppy drive. Thanks for your help, anyways.

No probs. You should be able to pick up a good working Mac from $0 - $50. Here's a good list of which Classic Mac to avoid at all costs and why. It may help with your decision making Wink
