If it comes as Disk Copy image (.img), just add it the emulator's drives list using the emulator's GUI.

If it comes as .sit file, it problably includes a collection of floating files, maybe browse the folder containing that file as UNIX root to copy it over into the emulator's boot drive and then unstuff it inside the emulator using Stuffit.

I hope other readers do post better hints than mine.

okay it sort of worked. I started the game from the .img file but sheepshaver crashes?

What do you mean by UNIX root to copy over?

AHQK:

Unix root applies if you are using SheepShaver in Mac OS X. Is that your case?

From the setup guide:

"Finally, you will see the desktop with icons for the startup volume (the CD or the CD disk image), the icon for the new volume that you will install the system onto, and the icon for a “Unix” volume that gives access to the shared folder in the SheepShaver folder on the Mac OS X side."

You set that up by creating a folder in the SheepShaver folder and specifying that in the "Unix Root" field in the SheepShaver setup.

I think I figured it out. Now if only it would let me use
return to zork, it says it can't read it.

When/where does it say it cannot read it? What, specifically, is the error message you get? And at what point.

If you are using SheepShaver for OS X, keep in mind that the "unix" thing is very buggy in the version available on the official SheepShaver site. It can corrupt your files and make them un-usable if you transfer them to the emulation. You should use a newer, unofficial version:

What Space Quest version are you using? I'll download it and try it out.

And again are: Are you using SheepShaver for OS X or for Windows?

this is for 0sx by the way.

How did you fix it? You seem to be able to solve all of your problems on your own, which is really great... but you should share your solutions so that other posters can learn something!

okay, I installed the latest version of Sheepshaver and COI chubby Bunny (for a disk ROM bootable).
on os x intel. After a lot of reading the fine print. Just open all .sit files in os x. Once you get your .img files simply put them into you users/shared folder and it lets me mount the images and most things work like a charm Smile
However, Return to Zork, downloaded from here gives me the above message. I had to actaully move the .img file to an empty 2.5 gig .dmg file that came with COI chubby bunny in order to mount it.
I was able to install the game but now it keeps saying I need the CD in the drive in order to play. Yet I can see your typical CD icon of Zork on the Desktop of Sheepshaver, so I'm a bit puzzled.
Hope this helps:)

I'll try that one out on my home PC later and see if I get the same problem.

If the game is demanding a CD, you could always just try to burn a CD copy and use that (though I'm not sure if the image available here can be used for that purpose).

Do ya think a dvd would be acceptable? or does it need to be CD

It's probably okay.

And you can try adding the img as a volume in the SheepShaver GUI, if you haven't already.

Do you know that Return to Zork can be run using ScummVM?

If you are desperate to run the game, you can do it that way.

I can't get Return to Zork to work either. I grew up playing the Mac version and have the original CD stored away at my parents. I tried the DOS version and remember the Mac version being much better and having more video sequences, so I wanted to try the Mac version to compare. I downloaded the img from the torrent on here, and it installs fine but doesn't recognize the CD when the image is mounted. So I'm guessing it's a copy protection issue and either the image wasn't created properly or the copy protection is smart enough to know if you're using an image rather than a CD. Oddly enough, the game runs if I have my burned copy of the DOS version in the CD drive but it skips all of the movies.

I had the same problem when I tried it out. This happened in SheepShaver for Windows. I guess it is a copy protection issue or something else, like you said.

PS: The "Chubby Bunny COI" is really bad. Everyone should (if they can find the files and follow the directions) just set up SheepShaver themselves.
