I need a Quicktime media handler

I'm using iView to catalog my collection of ClipArt. iView uses Quicktime as its media handler for translating various file formats into a screen image.

Most of the ClipArt I have is displayed nicely by iView - with the exception of Adobe Illustrator EPS format files. When I try to display an EPS file, iView reports an error stating that the importer could not be found.

Please tell me where to find the Quicktime extension I need to display EPS files. I'm using Quicktime 6.0.3 on Mac OS 9.2.2.

Hi Gary. I don't think there is a QT import codec for .EPS files (I could be wrong of course). You could I suppose, open your .EPS in Illustrator or some other program that can handle this format.

One program you can try is MacGhostView. The final version to run on Mac OS 9 was version 3.2, the DL for this earlier version is at the bottom of the MacGhostView 5.0 page.

MacGhostView is a shareware - unless registered, it nags each time it launches (makes you wait a few seconds) but otherwise its not crippled in anyway. It opens .EPS files and will generate a screen bitmap if one is not present in the file. It also exports to common file formats such as PICT, TIFF, PDF etc, so you can export your .EPS to a format which iView can then catalog for you.

Thanks for the info and the link. I'll check out MacGhostView.

But I'm looking for something compatible with iView (a cataloging app) because iView displays thumbnails of thousands of pieces of artwork at once (in a scrolling window) - very handy when I'm looking for something in particular.

Illustrator definitely opens these files but as a cataloging tool, it fails dismally.

Yes, its a real pain (dealing with .EPS)

I recommend that you also check out this program called "Thumbs Plus".
You can think of Thumbs+ as being kind of a live image cataloger, it really is a "Swiss Army Knife" image tool, it can open just about any graphic format that you can toss at it, including .EPS and does a lot more. It also displays thumbnails of thousands of pieces of artwork at once...

However, in order for any program to view .EPS on screen, the .EPS being viewed must contain a screen bitmap. If your .EPS files do, then there will be no problem here, but if they don't... you won't see the image on screen... unless you use Illustrator, etc or MacGhostView which can generate bitmap previews internally from the file's postscript data. If you try Thumbs+ and it doesn't display the .EPS, it will be because of the file not containing a screen bitmap (contains postscript data only).

I looked at MacGhostView and it seems promising. I say that because in the iView manual it states that EPS files can be viewed by installing Ghostscript. And I found a folder in the MacGhostViewn archive called Ghostscript - although no Ghostscript installer in that folder.

I looked at the Ghostscript web site but they seem to have only the last couple of versions (requiring Mac OS X).

The Internet archive has a Ghostscript version that I downloaded but it is incomplete.

Where can I get a copy of Ghostscript that is complete and for Mac OS 9?

The link I gave you for MacGhostView (the final OS 9 version) includes Ghostscript in its install. Drag an .EPS onto MacGhostView and you will see that it uses Ghostscript to do the image rendering (and any subsequent conversions should you decided to). I really do recommend tho' that you also try Thumbs Plus.

I would recommend iView Media Pro 3.1.x under OS9.

From memory, I had a lot of Illustrator EPS files, and it displayed them perfectly (also EPS ClipArt collections).

There is an app out there for Classic OS called EPS-Convertor from memory, and it took AI and EPS files without previews, and converted them to EPS with previews (drag&drop). You could almost certainly do the same under Classic Mac OS, with Ghostscript and GSView/Ghostscript Viewer, but batch processing might prove very slow and unreliable.

There should be a setting in iView Media Pro to recreate thumbnails.

Good idea. I'm using the PRO version 2.6.4. I have a copy of version 3.8.1 but it is the non-PRO flavor. The PRO version will catalog an unlimited number of files. My non-PRO version is crippled with a limit of 7000 files but DOES display EPS files nicely.

I've looked for v3.anything in the PRO flavor but came up empty. All I could find was non-PRO.

Where should I look for the 3.n PRO version?
