hmmm, I plugged the iBook in after not using it for a while, and it proceeded to charge up to 63% (up from 52%). This is a breakthrough - I have it charging again, and will not check it until tomorrow morning - see how much farther I get (the lights on the battery reflect the correct charge too).

Update, after 18 hours of charging, 65% is all I could achieve, I believe this machine is destined to be connected to mains power for the rest of its life. Thanks everyone for help and suggestions.
