Kaleidoscope theme archive

I could use some advice/suggestions. I'm trying to download a Kaleidoscope theme from
http://www.kaleidoscope.net/schemes/completelisting.shtml . But any theme I click on gives an error message like:

"Counter Error - "Couldn't open /home/kaleido/web/schemes/count/simplepurple.sit.txt"
The download counter has encountered an error and was unable to update the counter.
Please click the Back button in your browser and try again.

If you continue to see this error page, please contact the webmaster immediately with the error message above."

I've emailed the webmaster, the contact person from the front page, and the person on the internet WHOIS registration for the domain. No luck yet. There is a server at ftp.kaleidoscope.net, but I don't have access.

It looks like all the data is there. Something just needs to be reset so the page works again. Any suggestions? If we can get the data, I'll be happy to host it on TPB if it helps.

There are many great Themes at the link above. I've tried probably 50 of them. Hard to recommend any one in particular. But I do like the BeOS Theme right now. Really depends on your screen too.

AlumiteX-K2 was one of my favourites. I used it on my old iBook.

I thought the full installer for Kaleidoscope had a 7 theme included.

However, the Wayback Machine has thankfully archived them & the Kaleidoscope Schemes can still be had.

Scroll down page to items beginning "system".

Server not found

Firefox can't find the server at www.kaleidoscope.net.

Check the address for typing errors such as ww.example.com instead of www.example.com
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that TenFourFox is permitted to access the Web.

does anyone know how to change the mac os 9.2 bootscreen to system 7 boot screen

You'll need to find a copy of the 7 boot pict you want and save it as a "PICT Resource" file, named "StartupScreen" - This you place loose into the System Folder and it'll show when you next start up your Mac.

Color It is an easy to use bitmap editor that can output to StartupScreen "PICT Resource" format without resorting to ResEdit. A lot of other early Mac programs will also output to this format too, including classic versions of Photoshop.

miketomtom how to i fix dsk image that refuse to open in disk copy under os9 they open under osx leopard but not under os9.2.2 on my power mac g4

This topic is digressing.

There are a number of issues regarding .dsk images and some of them just won't work. Usually this is because the .dsk file has lost resources from the Resource Fork of the original file somewhere along the way and Disk Copy will not know what to do with it. Its better if you can, move an archive to the classic Mac System before you extract it to whatever its supposed to be.

Sometimes you can fix generic files on a classic Mac OS if you happen to know what created the file in the first place, by restoring their "Creator Type" & "File Type" info. But with ".dsk" this is too difficult (for me) as I don't know of one classic Mac disk archiving program that saves output to ".dsk" by default. Generally I think that these files have been labeled ".dsk" manually and specifically for use in emulators. That is, any disk archiving program could have created them but if the "Creator Type" & "File Type" info has gotten lost in the process of getting back onto a classic Mac system, its very hard to say which program has created those files.

If you're able to open or mount these on another OS (you say Leopard is OK) then try re-archiving what you have mounted into a format that you can use on OS 9. - Some flavor of StuffIt (e.g. DropStuff) might be useful. Its settings should be set to saving as ".sit" and use the Fastest Compression setting only & store hidden system files to "No", so it can be extracted OK by StuffIt Expander versions 5 - 6 on OS 9.
