laptop like ibook clamshell

yeah, so i tried asking this on apple fourms...and all they did was give me a noob answer...so, i'm gonna ask mah buddies here...you see I'm 16 now, and i'm about to get my own laptop....I was considering getting that clamshell, you know because of its kickass colors and the transparentness too....but then I saw the specs, and i was like, "nope, nope, nope" because i mean i'm gonna probablly be using this laptop for movies and music and stuff which will probablly occupy maybe around 100 or more gigs of space....so heres the question i'm gonna ask....
is there any laptop that maybe used some of the cool designs like the clamshell(color, transparency) and if so PLEASE list them..... I beg of you....srsly this would come of sooooo much help to me Smile

I don't think that there are any currently in production. The whole "transparent plastic" fad has ended.

If you have the skill and expertise, then you could probably buy an old clamshell iBook, remove everything from inside it, and then replace that with the internals from a newer laptop / notebook.

As far as i know there isn't anything, and modding another laptop in there would be difficult, but not impossible. (pity no one uses the 12.1" 4:3 LCD's anymore or this would be much easier...)

If your really set on getting a older mac i would look at the "Ice White" iBook G4's. That era of apple laptops are my all time favorite design of laptop, but thats just me. (that said i think all the G4's are actually just white plastic rather than the internally painted clear plastic like the G3's). Those are the most power you will get in any of apples older case packages. Not quite the clamshell look, but still way cooler than any morden PC / Mac laptop looks

However, i would seriously conciser getting a new PC laptop, if you pick your hardware carefully you can even run OSX (I'm typing this on a Acer E1-571 running Mountain Lion, Quad Core i7 power for 1/3 the price of the equivalent MBP Smile ). Or if you are set on apple hardware the '06 / '07 Macbooks are getting pretty reasonable now and still have a good few years of life in them. They may not look as good as the old Macs, but they will be way more useful

Listen to max1zzz, I have a cheap-ass Acer Aspire 4752, running 10.9.5 flawlessly. I also have my desktop PC dual-booting Win7-64bit with Mac OS X 10.9.5 (also working flawlessly). I didn't even choose my hardware carefully, I just got really lucky.

If you stick with Intel Core-I processor, you should be able to get latest Mavericks running 98%, main things not working out-of-the-box will be Graphics/Network/Sound/Sleep/Shutdown/Restart and Wireless/Bluetooth. Sound and Network issues are usually easily fixed with a kext install. Most sound cards (Realtek ALCxxx) are supported with a simple install. If you stick with supported AMD/NVIDIA graphics cards you will get full graphics acceleration support (an absolute MUST with so much of the Desktop animated/transparent now. My laptop only has Intel HD 3000 integrated, but that is enough for simple games (Psychonauts runs, and most games run at playable framerates at 1280x720).

You can usually access your Wireless/Bluetooth cards and replace them with Mac compatible ones (I needed to replace my Broadcom card with an Atheros AR9285).

SpeedStep (Intel EIST) also works with a custom script by RevoGirl (RIP). I have Turbo Mode working on my Desktop and Laptop Smile

There are also extensions/boot flags that alleviate the Shutdown/Restart problems, but getting Sleep to work seems to be the Holy Grail of Hackintosh. Most people can get Sleep to work by patching some important system files, along with using a custom patched DSDT file.

Do you have a link to a good guide for enabling turbo mode? try as i might i have never got it working on this laptop. Speedstep works fine (The processor varies it's speed between 1200mhz and 2200 mhz just fine) but it refuses to go over 2200mhz (it should go all the way to 3200mhz)

Hey Max1zz, you need to get rid of NullCPUPowerManagement.kext -- this kills turbo mode like Hasselhoff in Baywatch!

You need to patch AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext with AICPMpatch, or if you are VERY BRAVE, you could patch the BIOS with latest PMPatch (I used the Windows version as it is newer. Just repatched my UEFI BIOS from MSI Mobo, works fine with vanilla Apple Kexts) Smile

PS. Make a copy of AICPM.kext before patching, patch the copy, as you cannot successfully patch the running kext - I don't know why) - Keep a backup of the untouched kext in case you need it in future, or use Pacifist to extract it from latest update. 1GHz over standard speed sounds more like overclocking than turbo mode (my Core-i3 only goes from 2.3GHz to 2.6GHz, only 300MHz more), but that is the correct turbo mode spec.

Best of luck.

Awesome, patched AICPM.kext and it's working Smile Dosen't seem to want to go all the way up to 3200mhz, but it's going up yo 2900mhz so i'm happy

And yeah, it does seem rather high for turbo mode, but it's correct: http://ark.intel.com/products/71670/Intel-Core-i7-3632QM-Processor-6M-Ca...

You can set the max tdp and turbo frequency with RevoGirl's patch (RIP). It has been picked up by others and updated. Get the newest version you can find. I think the RevoGirl SSDT patch is an absolute necessity (so Mac OS X knows the frequencies/voltages etc) It is like this:

ssdtgen.sh 35 3200 (mine would be 90 3700). Also get the latest hardware sensors package for accurate readings.

Mine is 3.7GHz, but that is only for ONE CORE, at times all 4 cores are at 3.6GHz, which is still pretty darn quick. Considering mine is only 2nd Gen, that is a nice little boost.

Yeah i have done that, not dice
However i'm happy with 2900mhz, it's nearly a 32% faster than the stock clock, which i think is pretty darn good

Have you tried the generic Core-i5/i7 SSDT option in multib*ast?

That seems to work just as well as the script, without the hassle. PS. What are you using to strain the processor? It may not be enough... I use GeekBench 2, and it only hits max speed about twice during the benchmark (41 secs).

Actually the thread you referenced was signed by "a brody" who is a VERY smart guy. He has given me several gems in the Pre-X forums over the years. You should NOT discount his information/help lightly.
