What a machine! I once had very similar hardware, but it was written Umax on its outside Smile.
Some people say the Umax drivers will work. Umax MagicScan 3.0.1 is here, did you try?
LinoColor Lite 4.2 or higher is said to be better.
You may look here too and take a shot at usenet: http://www.cocsoft.stream.down.v3.3.by.fff.cracks.me.uk/mac/?l=l
LinoColor 5.0 CD Added: 2005-01-01 serial: C4475-WKQV8Z-UUQ3B
At cocosoft is this link "LinoColor 5.0 CD [Full Version] - 2278 Kb/sec" to usenet:
http://www.cocsoft.stream.down.v3.3.by.fff.cracks.me.uk/mac/d.php?n=31204
- alas, I did not try myself.

May be you can use a generic TWAIN driver as well? All scanners should work with that interface and e.g. Photoshop.

Hmm, this may help you, with product IDs etc.

See the Details tab for info...

Also, discovered that Silverfast have software written for the Topaz scanners... works with firewire, see here -> http://www.high-end-scanner.com/english/topaz-heidelberg-linotype-hell.html

They also have a free demo download for OS X Leopard.

It is a Universal Binary, so put enough RAM in your machine, and scan in Leopard, and you won't need Linocolor... I believe this is Silverfast Ai, which should also be available from other sources.

at least it gives you an option to save that wonderful scanner!

Thank you everybody for you help.

@24bit the link for the Umax MagicScan does not work anymore.
@themacmeister i know that i can run it with Silverfast or Vuescan on my newer machine but i will run it on my good old PowerMac 8500. Because this is my "Scanningcomputer" and i will give him as much possible job´s to do.
I love this old computer´s which do useful tasks, for me it gives them a right to exist ; )

Regards

@docf: the link for Umax MagiScan is here... Stuff that gets posted up to the garden is never ever immediately available (if at all) But, if its a fresh upload, a registered user can usually, login, go to the page they want then choose "Edit this page" and download from the actual link in the edit page...

@24bit:telling a n00b (and some of the long time users too, it seems) "they can get it from here"... it is often the case that they "can't" and they simply do not understand how to even if it is "there", esp. when the amazonaws links never work initially. It may be simpler to give an actual DL link in those cases, unless you know for sure they are mind readers Wink

@mikeTomTom thank´s for linking the Umax Software.
I ´ve tested it but with no luck. The scanner was found but the buttons for Scanning or Prescan are still inactive : ((
I think there is a specific lock to protect the software to a specific scanner?

@docf: Ah well, it was a long shot then, too bad. Looked for some LinoType scanner software but it seems to be very rare indeed. I read where someone had a LinoType Jade 2 scanner (on Windows) and was searching for drivers for it. He was pointed towards Umax VistaScan drivers and apparently this worked for him.

Anyway if you want to try the Umax VistaScan software you can get it here direct from Umax.

Choosing "Vista S12" will get you VistaScan 2.4.3 and choosing "Astra 2400S" will get you VistaScan 3.5.1 SCSI drivers for Mac OS 8.6 - 9.1

The VistaScan 2.4.3 software runs on earlier Mac OS's than 8.6 too. It also can run the excellent Umax Copier software, located on the same page linked above (so it would be good if the earlier VistaScan software would work for you too).

Might be another "long shot" but you don't have too many choices I think. Tho' eventually someone may turn up with the correct driver software for you. So good luck.

Silverfast definitely had a version that worked in OS 8.6, so you should probably pester them for a copy -- the chances that Linotype/Heidelberg will have a copy is very slim indeed.

I will search through my backups for a copy of Silverfast Ai, but it will not be Topaz specific I fear...

OK, I have spoken with two contacts (one who is a Linotype Drum Scanner technician), and things are not looking good. The most interesting discovery is that apart from Linocolor and Silverfast, there was one other American piece of software to drive the Topaz (but he cannot remember the name).

After I search for my Mac copy of Silverfast, I have expended all avenues of inquiry. Now we just need to find the name of that third scanning software, and company.

AHAH! VueScan

For Mac OS 8.6? - Mac OS X, Linux & Windows OS's only, I think.

Thank you all for you help : )))
I use Vuescan as a full version on my MacBookPro and it´s a great piece of software.
There was a software out V. 7.5.38 which supported the Saphire Ultra II on Mac os 8.1 and up.
I wrote to Hamrick if he can send me a copy of this version but he told me that he did not keep older versions of his software: (
And if i will do an update of my PowerMac to os9 for the newer vuescan there will be some troubles with the serial number.
I think the serial for my new Vuescan copy will not work with the old Version.
@Mike the vista driver for the umax does not work either.

I have tried the MagicScan V 4.5 from the umax website for os 8.6 and it works : ))
i have chosen the driver for the powerlook III and os 8.6 for the operating software.
Thank you very much everybody.

If you want to throw $370 away, you could buy Linocolor Mac 5.02/6.04 on eBay!

Best of luck -- I would love to know the quality of scans after all these years... if you could post a sample scan of a transparency or high quality reflective source, I would be very interested!

Are you still looking for this software? I have all discs and manuals for it, as I purchased the scanner when using it under Mac OS 8.6, but after system upgrades had to change to Silverfast. Please let me know if you're interested.
