Sorry for my bad English grammar. I meant that they are Unix.

A Unix abandonware site would be neat though. Once you get the systems up and running, it's not easy to find old software to run on them.

I've been debating whether to fix up the Giants: Citizen Kabuto page (which is already on the garden; but was uploaded in .dmg formats that won't work), as I have the original discs that I am able to make toast images of. It is a very early OS X game, its minimum requirement being 10.0.2. Others that come to mind are Cro-Mag Rally, Red Faction 1, AVP2, possibly some Star Wars games.

I think with Lion now out, if a PPC OS X app cannot run at all in it then it should be considered for qualification either on this site; or a subsection, or even another domain as mentioned. These early OS X games can't even be emulated on Lion. (Though PearPC has seen some activity recently; no idea if its coming to Mac).

The fact is, pages for these early OSX games (Giants, Halo) have already wormed their way onto the site, we need to decide whether they will remain, and if so, maintain them.

Cro-Mag Rally

which is originally a game created for (my box version says) Mac OS 8.6 with 233 MHz G3,
but got an update for Mac OS X later.

Yes, Lion is out, but Apple still supports all Mac OS X systems down to 10.2:

Yeah I thought I might have got that one mixed up, never did own it myself, played it on iMacs in school.

I think Red Faction had updates from OS 9 onto OS X also.

@xy this all comes down to people's interpretation of 'abandonware;' which I don't want to try and debate in this thread; I was simply making the point that OS X as it is today is quite far removed from the operating system that (some of) these early OS X games were compatible with.

Here's a situation which we're not all thinking of, yet.

Now I'm in no way suggesting that we should be hosting any of this software, but although it is only a few years old, it is, without question, not available for sale.

I'm thinking of software only available via download, from a single site, and what happens when that site decides to stop selling it.

As an extreme example, look at Mac OS X Lion (10.7) Server. I want to update the Mac OS X Server version on my Xserve 2008. Mac OS X Mountain Lion (10.Cool and the Server component require 64-bit EFI, which I have, but 10.8 doesn't like my default Radeon card. No problem, I pulled it and put a new Radeon card in that does work with 10.8. Still I can't install 10.8.

So 10.7 it has to be. Does Apple sell this in the App Store any more ? No. Where can I get it ? It was never released on physical media, only as a download.

Mac OS X Lion Server is just an example. How many other recent software titles are there that appear for a period as download only, before disappearing forever.

Fortunately for me, I've managed to buy a copy of Mac OS X 10.6 Server with licence on DVD. Not as good as 10.7 for the modules I want to use.

Hi bertyboy, You will probably need to use a hackintosh technique to get the installer on USB stick (or order the USB stick from Apple for too much money).

Looks like certain things are still "buggy" and not working, but at least it RUNS now.

Laggy iSight
No iMessages or Facetime
No Bonjour Sharing
Some files in the root of the hard drive that should be hidden are not. DO NOT DELETE THEM!

All of these issues should be fixed in 0.3 release!
