Mac OS X uploads

Recently, more and more Mac OS X apps have been uploaded. I suggest introducing an upload entry separate from classic entries since it is enervating if you search the ABC... entries and find so many Mac OS X apps instead of classic apps.

Mac OS X is Unix/BSD and not Mac OS.

…or, as have been suggested in other threads here; create an entirely different place for 'Early OS X'.
The X stuff is much more likely to still be supported and thus interesting for 'the wrong reason' a la EA.

Two yearsa ago I would have agreed. But this could be the place for OS X 10.2 and 10.3 software no longer accessible through Apple's software Update. I mean with clear instructions for the downloads required and order in which they must be applied, if you're upgrading a Mac with OSX 10.3 to the most current versions. It is a shame that we have to do this, especially since every OS8, OS9, OSX 10.1, 10.2 and 10.3 update from Apple added together is smaller than a single combo update for OSX 10.6

If we accept Jaguar and Panther uploads only there might not be a need for a seprate entry since there are not many Jaguar apps (Panther somewhat more, though). However, some people started uploading Tiger and above software which I find VERY problematic.

I agree. It would be a good idea if the admins/mods agreed to take a more editorial approach, assessing each such problematic case, and making a (final) decision to remove or not.

What difference does it make so long as it is properly labeled? 5 tears and Tiger will be in the same shape OS 9 is in now. Why wait until then to realize we need to upload the stuff?

Yes I agree, mostly. Except that I think there should be alternative site (similar to the Mac Garden) to cater for archiving PPC OS X abandonware.

I would support that.

The fine line here - if there is to be one. - IMHO, if Mac OS X capable apps get uploaded here, they must also run on OS 9.x at a bare minimum (i.e; carbonized apps only). If not, they should be removed.

I've been on the cautious side too. Then I had to deal with Aspyr.

Think of all the Aspyr game titles produced over the years up to OSX 10.5. All written for PowerPC and only run on Intel bcause of Rosetta. OX 10.7 changed all that. What did Aspyr do ? Absolutely nothing. I tell a lie, they put a support page up with the long list of titles that wouldn't work, and recommended that users downgrade their OS. Smile
Compare against Virtual Programming, who released Intel-native patches for nearly all their games.

Can we say that the Aspyr titles have been abandoned ?

Like others have suggested, the time to preserve these games has come, and more importantly, the time to preserve the patches has come and gone. Finding patches for these games is near-impossible. I've kept the patches for all the games I own, but if I was to buy a bundle of old OS X games 2nd user, whre would I get the patches from ?
