Hi guys,

I would like to know if the ram chips of Classic II will work with Classic, I already got the expansion card.

Should do, they're both 30 pin SIMMs, same as in my old IIci and IIsi. The Classic Ii SIMMs are more than fast enough to wok in a Classic. Had a Classic II also, but never upgraded the RAM in it.

I have something in the back of my mind that says there was a major change to Mac RAM around that time, perhaps from 30 pin to 72 pin, but all the Macs mentioned so far use the 30-pin variety.

In an original Macintosh Classic? Maybe. If the Classic II RAM is 1 MB SIMMs only, it may work. If its 2 or 4 MB RAM SIMMs then probably not (the original Mac Classic accepts 256k or 1 MB SIMMs for a maximum expansion of 4 MB).

The Classic II has 2MB Onboard RAM, with a maximum limit of 10MB. (2 sticks of 4MB)
The Classic has 1MB Onboard RAM,with a maximum limit of 4MB. (1MB built on the expansion card, plus 2 sticks of 1MB)

I was able to use the two sticks of 1MB from my Classic II (because I maxed it to 10MB,) to max out a Classic to 4MB.

So yes, you can use Classic II ram in a Classic. So long as the sticks are 1MB or less.

LOL, 2 4MB SIMMs at the time cost more than the Classic II itself.

Wow, good thing I got mine then in 2002. Tongue My Classic II was a birthday present when I was about 10/11. (I'm 20 now, so that shows how "young" I am in the Classic Mac world. Wink )

A Mac Classic uses only 256k OR 1 MB 30-pin DRAM SIMMs, 120 ns or faster. As you want to expand it fully, you will need two, 1 MB SIMMs to bring your Classic up to its 4 MB maximum.

You said earlier that you tried some RAM from a Classic II and it did not work. Was it greater than 1 MB on each of the RAM sticks? - Did you set the jumpers on the motherboard expansion card for the RAM, when you installed it into the Classic before rebooting?

Also, from the Apple Memory Guide pdf:

Note: The Macintosh Classic can perform erratically if 1MB SIMMs containing two chips are installed. When installing memory, be sure to use 8 chip SIMMs.

Interesting, there are 9 chips on those... Anyway, something like this should work. But wait for others to confirm before buying it. I'm not an expert.

Strange, the Classic II ram should have worked...

9th chip is for parity-- detect memory errors. Macintosh computers need to have hardware support for it, most don't, so it serves no function. But the SIMMs will still work OK.
