Aye, thats a lot of links for the larger things down the gurgeler. Disappointing (and a little out of the blue).
I guess we'll need to do a bit of damage control. What other alternatives are there?
I will remove step-by-step my uploads to SendSpace

What makes you think that SendSpace will stick around?
The criminal investigation of MegaUpload started 2 years ago.
But from today Megaupload servers closed

I just downloaded 1GB+ from megaupload yesterday? It was slower than usual, but still working?!
Confirmed inoperative at the moment tho... DANG!
this is too much!
first, SOPA and now Megaupload
what is this? a test field for the incoming censorshit over the internet?
and now they re pushing arguments to turn censorship as something socially acceptable?
happy to live in usa? what now?
damn... to much questions in a website that s scared of a single uncertified mail of EA games...
macgarden adms, lets hope you have keep backups of all of my uploads here.
Poor chap arrested just a few miles from me. He looks like he's not going to last long on prison food.
But seriously, the MPAA and others being ab;e to achieve all that by just suggesting that all their income came from those downloading pirated material, that's scary.
At least the site has done the right thing from day one, taking down anything at the request from the original publishers or who appeared to be the original publishers, not just all the EA games, but also Dark Castle, Startegic Conquest and others.
If the music and film industry wouldn't have went digital but stayed analog nobody could rob them. These industries betray their customers with digital quality, which is much lower quality than analog one, in order to make easy cash, and then they are wondering that this isn't easy at all! The scam started with the introduction of the music CD which is not only of lesser quality than the LP but after some years looses its content. And now they do not invest in any hardware at all any more by going iTunes, and wonder that customers fight back!
The sad thing is that the ones who profit most in the music and film industry are the managers and businessmen, not most of the artists (the exception being the stars only). It's a joke to talk about copyright infringement because most artists get bad contracts.
The same is happening now in the book industry, and the result in the long run will be that writers make even less money than the little money they make now.
Artists and writers go back vinyl, celluloid and paper!
It`s a myth that the analog audio has better quality,
what you say it`s just a Nostalgia Syndrome and a lie,
Digital Audio it is a natural evolution of technology and certainly much better.
Nope I wont go back to analog, only for live performances.
Feds shut it down. The US had New Zealand arrest the site's operators on its behalf.
I would assume everything that was stored there is gone.
Megaupload has plants to create biggest music shop (something like iTunes) where 90% profits from sell go back to artists.
Powers Of Evil cant permit it...
Do any of us need to worry about this, at least for the stuff posted hear. I can't speak for everyone, but the only thing I used my mega upload account for was to post stuff to this website.
And when I mean worry, I don't mean loss of data, but legal concerns. Could they go after members of the site?
I do have numerous files from Mac Garden/Megaupload that may be in the "missing" collection.
I think they should have investigated the files: I'm sure there's thousands of legitimate documents there.
Sure lawyers will be happy with all that work.
Detaining an EU citizen in NZ on behalf of the FBI? Quite interesting.
According to German law, you would hardly get such a asset seizure, as long as there are tons of legal files on the servers. Commensurability of the instrumentality would be the problem.
That really is bad news. Had lots of stuff parked over on megaupload. Countless hours of work just went down the drain...
We can always hope for some legal backlash from those that had legitimate business data on MU, I know many who used it as a second tier file transfer host if the reliability of their primary FTP server supplier was less than perfect, or if the files were too large to be economically viable to use their primary FTP server, but nearly always because MU was so much faster than their expensive and slow remote FTP servers.
According to the news there a two major claims against MU: Firsty, that they paid some uploaders for uploading and, second, that they did money laundrying.
... yes, too bad stupid goverment shut down MEGAUPLOAD,
I used to download my favorite movies from there and fast.
Well it's a doggone shame. Megaupload is where I parked almost all of my uploads. Thankfully I have all of the files locally still and I think I have managed to download most of what appealed to me already.
Regarding the analog / digital audio and video, it's a lie that analog is better. As Euryale writes, it's a natural evolution of technology. The same thing applies to digital photo and video.
I have ears to hear, and those ears hear that analog is of far better quality than digital. Of course, if you use an ancient needle and a cheap drive analog is no good. Analog has very high hardware demands which digital might not have.
The analog to digital question also has to take into consideration recent dumb moves by the recording companies to create these "hot mixes". This is the attitude that "louder is better". It used to be used for radio as a way to get the sound to be half way decent, overcoming signal degradation and the like. Then some moron decided that the cd's should sound like this. As someone who works with ADC's all day long, I can tell you that if you have a really loud signal, it saturates the ADC(or in our case DACs) and makes the amplitudes of the frequencies flat. Thus reducing the variation is volumes, and overall corruption of the wave form.
So there may be some truth to the record versus CD argument, but you also have to take into account that sometimes the CD technology is tragically misapplied.
Do we have a viable alternative to MegaUpload? I would prefer free, as I am not sure I can convince my accountant that paying for an account is a worth while investment(yes, my accountant is a euphemism for my wife).
Here is an article on alternatives
http://www.gizmodo.co.uk/2012/01/five-great-alternatives-to-megaupload/
From what it is saying, Minus seems to be the best option. Files can be up to 2GB and you get a total of 50GB from free accounts. Subscriptions aren't necessary to keep them from deletion either.
Not sure what the limits are with the Uploading.to service it mentions, if there good enough, it might be worth using that so if one site is shut off the others can still deliver the content. Either way, when uploading a file for here, having a backup for people to use if one goes down would be sensible
News seen in German television, it seems, MegaUpload supported uploading current movies in active state,
but as you know, don't trust any news provided in German newscast, because they're censored by German Newspaper Government Bureau ("German Presserat") in any case, who tells the newscast providers to be US friendly only.
Why not host everything yourself? You will never have this problem again
A few years back, money was raised to host files at Macintosh Garden that were hundreds of megabytes. Unfortunately, for some reason, it was never implemented.
There is no such thing as digital audio. It's just data. Everytime you listen to it, everytime a sound engineer edit a file he is listening to, the data is analogized. The sample frequency and bitrate available nowadays is by far enough for the demands of the human ear.
Of course, it would be nice if we could have stuck to analog photo, sound and video because then it would have been "real". However, the ability to edit, process and copy data has made analog media obscure.
Thanks for the link to the five alternatives to MU, I've just signed up for Minus, when my broadband quota is reset for next month, I'll go though all my uploads and replace any MU links with ones from minus.com, may take a few months.
This is also an opportunity for those who have downloaded vast amounts of abandonware from Macintosh Garden and uploaded very little in return. If you feel you want to contribute more, you could re-upload any MU-sourced files to one of the alternatives and help preserve it.
Re: the news coverage, what a difference of opinion depending on the provider, I made the mistake of using CNN to get some further info, sounded like a different story. Then I remembered CNN is owned by Time Warner, one of the parties pushing the prosecution.
Edit:
I find it quite funny that the allegations suggest that all of MU's $175m revenue came from those paying to download pirated music and video, denying the plaintiffs $500m in lost revenue. So those too cheap to pay $10 to buy, or $3 to rent a DVD have paid $4 to MU so they can download a pirate copy at a slightly higher speed.
Any good defence team will make mince of the prosecution, for the criminal prosecution anyway. A shame they've taken on Bill Clinton's legal representation, I would have gone for the OJ Simpson team. Not defending them, if they're guilty of making that much money from pirated material, then lock them up and throw away the key, but the allegations against them are very broad, with little or no obvious evidence, yet, I have expected to Al-Quaeda mentioned in there. Their best hope may be an untained jury.
Maybe we should have a thread for reporting files for reupload?
I know i will be re uploading any files i find which i have and where on MU
Have we tried to send email to the Justice Department or the FBI or whatever talking about the lost files? I think that may be a plausible alternative.
Whatever way you may feel about downloading content without paying for it. Does not make any difference. The entertainment industry lobbies congress to make actions like shutting down megaupload possible, its' not really about lost revenue it's more about control. As for people who hosted totally legitimate content on megaupload according to the entertainment industry and the DOJ you can go f*** yourself if you don't have an army of lobbyists then you don't matter.
I will look though what downloads I have and re-upload as much I can to other hosting services, but I fear this is not the end of this but only the tip of the ice berg.
"Have we tried to send email to the Justice Department or the FBI or whatever talking about the lost files? I think that may be a plausible alternative."
Please don't do that. Seriously.
Yeah, they might try to charge you for involvment in a conspiracy to commit mass piracy.
Yeah, you're right. Government goons probably don't care for Mac games anyway.
The whole case might just be about stupidity: Kim Schmitz had a pretty good working business model: subscribers paid for unlimited fast download of films. Exactly this model also the film industry could have implemented and made a lot of money - but - they obviously they were too slow and too stupid for this. It's like with the music industry: Steve Jobs had to save them with iTunes; they were too stupid to implement such a thing as iTunes themselves...
IIGS User, as for you thinking that the German media is manipulated, I think that is true for all (or most) of the media internationally. Journalists are stupid poor persons totally depended on the publishers, and the publishers like to hang up with the influential ones....
Ah, I see.
Going back to topic, they don't differ between current movies and old Mac games.
@ I agree with the posts about manipulated mainstream media, but thanks to the internet we have the power to check everything and see through lies. That is why it is so important to stop SOPA & such plans..
Anyway, as I wrote, I spent countless hours of uploading stuff to megaupload. (I did upload a lot of 4 or 5 disc multimedia games)
So when thinking about alternatives services, I really fear that any of them could be shut down on the same premises as megaupload next week. Some posters here already asked why we wouldn't store the files on a (bigger) server ourselves? I had donated twice in the past when money was collected for that purpose and I would even do it another time if only we could finally undertake that step?
I think the best way to begin "rebuilding" would be as follows:
1. Make a list of all software lost. While tedious, this shouldn't be toooo hard.
2. Begin compiling lost files in a central location. These could be trusted community members' hard drives, server space here even if they aren't available for download due to bandwidth things, or uploaded to a tertiary private server. If the latter, I suggest the one on macdomain.org, but I'm a little biased being an admin on that server and all
I agree with theos911 , the best way to avoid this in the future is to archive it in multiple locations, even if these are not online locations it helps to reduce file loss if this happens again, also it might be worth moving to storing in comminuinty maintained locations that are only for mac abandonware, even if it is a secondary download location it means it is always available
Just searched for "www.megaupload.com" and guess how many hits?
http://macintoshgarden.org/search/node/www.megaupload.com?page=48
481.
And then there's the pages with multiple uploads.
481 files is not ridiculous. Get a crew of 10 people finding one file a day and it will take less than 2 months...
No matter how many files it is, it's not a disaster, a single page clearly listing the apps and games affected, versions, formats etc, and we each tick one off as we upload it and update the game / app page with the new link.
It would be something that everyone who has ever downloaded from here can contribute towards.
SOPA is a strange thing, you can listen to the chief execs of the corporations involved explain why it is necessary, and I have to agree with everything they say, the piracy and theft that must be stopped. I agree with all that they say they're trying to achieve, BUT the SOPA legislation bears no relation to this desire, it grants obscene powers to a supposed civilised country, which already exist in other countries around the world that we call 'babberous' and 'evil'.
It was only a matter of time, really. Does make you wonder who is next on the hit list though.
RIP Megaupload. You will be missed. I had no idea that the owners were that rich either!
Now begins the long tedious task of reuploading all that was lost... ^_^
I already uploaded 3 files. If you lazy people would get moving we could be done in no time.
I estimate I could upload about three dozen more files that I grabbed here previously.
Christ! Is it poss to get this together in a list to be ticked off? Think it could make more of helpers if it´s made easy,
like me for an instance…
Recommended places to upload to?
Edit:
Made the list, which can be read here; http://macintoshgarden.org/forum/files-missing-mu-list-links
I tell you who´s next on the black list
xxxxxxxx.com (I download a lot of stuff from there but they don´t store actual data)
xxxxxxxx.com (I still look for hard to find stuff)
xxxxxxxx.com (secret site I know, hopefully they won´t find it)
xxxxxxxx.org (I download all my movies from)
xxxxxxxx.org (I download all my Windows software from there)
www.macintoshgarden.org
(oh! this one is NOT on the list, do not worry they ONLY PRESERVE OLD ABANDONEWARE,)
now, you better think twice about uploading Mac OS X stuff here...
All of these sites I know for certain are on the list except two, but I believe it´s just a matter of time
What's wrong with osx stuff?
.. by the way,
Digital Audio is much better quality than Analog,
@ XY, I believe you have good ears, but NOT as good as you think they are! (he he)
Germany´s biggest political party CDU/CSU wants to launch a legislation resembling SOPA more than closely.
For those of you reading German, look here: http://www.golem.de/1201/89320.html
Anticipatory obedience was a well known problem in the past and it still seems to be.
