Missing "Text Encoding Converter"?!

I installed FM7, and now I have no DragThing, due to there being a missing "Text Encoding Converter". IIRC StuffIt Deluxe used to install an extension under OS7, but now Apple have it built-in somewhere??!

Can anybody point me in the right direction to getting this fixed - it would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

Isn't Text Encoding Converter installed with the Mac OS 9 installer? It should be in your Extensions folder. You need it for so many things! Maybe the missing TextEncodingConverter is the reason why FM does not launch on your system (and HoverBar makes problems).

No, I have been using the "Built-in" text encoding converter since I installed the OS (DragThing relies on it). After installing FM7, DT cannot find it. I believe it is rolled into StuffitEngine, or QuickTime extensions?!

I checked my system folder. Text Encoding Converter is in the extensions folder. Actually I do not remember whether it was installed by the Mac OS 9 installer or MRJ.

What does Sherlock say? Does Sherlock find your lost Text Encoding Converter somewhere?

If you select it in Extensions manager, it should give you a hint as to the software it was installed with, ie. Mac OS Z-9.2.2, Internet Config 1.5.1, MRJ 2.2.6.

You could just try a Get Info and check the last entry in the Version info.

Of course, if you don't have it, you'll need someone else with a similar OS setup to do this for you. For me, it (v1.6) was installed with OS9.2.2, but that means nothing if your Mac came with an earlier OS which you've upgraded.

I will replace the Text Encoding Converter from the installer included on MS Office 2001 for Mac CD. Hopefully this is a fairly recent one - otherwise I will do a reinstall of the OS (sigh).
