My next Hackintosh

I pick up my new (second-hand) Core i5 Hackintosh in two days Smile

It is a crappy Gateway model, but the GeekBench scores are nearly 50% higher than my current 3.6GHz Phenom II x4 975 !!!

It has 8GB 1600 DDR3 DRAM, and a 1TB HDD. It supports SATA3 6Gb/s (good thing, as I want to use my Samsung 840 Pro SSD), but the most impressive thing about this AUS$450 machine is...

It comes with a 24" LED Benq monitor!, that is worth half the price right there!

So I am picking up a machine that scores 11,800 in GeekBench for only about $200 !!!

It has a generic case, but I don't care - as I have a new Fractal Design Core 3000 case waiting Smile

Also, it comes with Radeon HD 5570, which supports Snow Leopard, so I can run PPC apps if needed. I won't be able to run Leopard (for Classic Mode) as it is a Sandy Bridge processor/chipset Sad

Cannot wait!

Great finding! Congrats.
I had been thinking that I could run Classic in Leopard - only to learn that Classic never ran on Intel. Sad
Not really a surprise, is it?

Leopard in a VM may still be useful for testing or to write HFS disks, which 10.6 misses.

BTW: Don´t try to run Classic in PearPC. Wont work either. Sad
A big gap concerning emulators, but I´m afraid we won´t see much coding there.
(Maybe if Christian Bauer choose such a task for retirement.)

Dang, I wasn't aware of that Intel hitch until now! Thanks for the heads up 24bit! I wonder why they still have Rosetta for PPC software on Intel then??

Worth a thought Smile

Rosetta is for backwards compatibility with PPC Mac OS X apps, only. So you can for example, run PPC progs like BBEdit Lite 6.1.2 OS X on Leopard & SN, (which I do). But there is no Classic support, that was gone with the move from PPC to Intel, in OS X.

Classic was history with the move to Intel only chipsets.
Rosetta was history with Lion Sad

Congrats on your new purchase too, TMM. I have a now old dual-core Intel chipset lappy that I've played around with Hackintosh-wise. Problems with this lappy & OS X (Leopard & Lion), I couldn't get it to recognise the onboard keyboard and trackpad - I had to use an external USB keyboard & mouse, which detracted from the portability aspect I was hoping for. On a Hackintosh PC this would be less of an issue.

@MikeTomTom, this one used to work for me: http://www.osx86.net/view/1448-updated_trackpad+keyboard_ps2_32-64.html
I like the old C2D lappies - like my T60 - rock solid and easy maintenance.

24bit is correct, there are other kexts for keyboard/trackpad too, usually both PS2 (VoodooPS2) -- check Voodoo Projects for info/downloads.

I must have read the wrong geekbench results? This new PC is only about 1400 points higher, not 4000 !!

It certainly seems 'snappier', and it also has turbo mode to 3.8GHz (from 3.3GHz) and that might also give it a slight kick! Pics coming soon.

I got my new Core i5 2500 (3.3GHz) MSI MS 7681 (P67A-GD55[B3]) the other day.

I have been struggling to get Mac OS X Lion/Mountain Lion working on this system. I had limited success with 10.7.5, and some common software refused to run. I did a retail USB install of Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and updated to 10.8.4, and all that non-working software began working again (including Wineskin wrappers for PC games).

My existing Win7 64bit OS SSD kicked over without a blue screen, and allowed me to install all the new drivers. This motherboard doesn't support 1600 DDR3 DRAM, but allows RAM to be overclocked, so that is where the 7.8 Memory score comes from... It is running faster than stock 1600, but like all overclocks - nothing shows in RAM sections of CPU-Z.

I have sleep working on Mountain Lion 10.8.4, which is further than anyone else in the world has gotten. Too many people said it was impossible, which gave me a reason to continue. Speedstep and Turbo Mode (3.8GHz) appear to be working, although I cannot find a decent method for testing this? I will post the steps necessary in the near future. Suffice to say that this requires strict BIOS settings, a patched UEFI BIOS ROM, a clean windows dump of DSDT, autopatched for P67A-GD55, and then patched for EHCI Sleep. A manual patch is then required to remove two instances (EHC1 and EHC2) under ...Method _PRW {...

The built-in hub has it's own hardware, and doesn't seem to want to sleep. I should be able to track down the offending hardware, and patch it as well in DSDT. Also, USB not active during S3 sleep, which is a small but annoying problem. This may be fixable with EHCI Ownership, or similar. As it stands, the 4-port external non-powered hub seems to be working perfectly, as does Sleep itself.

Looks BL**DY beaut, tmm. Very nice indeed. When I have the time I want to have one running on my lappy. Had a couple of attempts - Thanks 24bit, for the pointers re laptop keyboard.

Best result for me was an Aitkos install a friend provided... but it was a Lion install and I want Rosetta (so wiped it and installed Debian in its place). When I do get around to it again, I'll aim for Leopard. I have a SN DVD, so may try it with this.

I got (OSX86) copies all the way from 10.4.2 ALLLLL the way to 10.8.4 (10.9 pre-release is available via torrent now)

I can't upload them, they are too big, but email a snail-mail address @MTT, and I'll mail you a copy of 10.5.x with updater to 10.5.8.

I am having sleep issues with my Toshiba 500GB External USB2.0 HDD. All my other USB2.0 drives sleep/wake as expected. Can anyone remember the name of that software that safely unmounts/mounts drives safely @ sleep?

Thanks Protocol 7, I found it on my own in the meantime. It works really well under 10.8.4.

I did manage a hard lock-up of the OS recently, using Quartz-X11, NetRadiant and iTunes. Computer crash was of EPIC proportions!!

I have bought and installed Jettison, but need to be online to activate it.

Had some USB HDD related system freezes in the past too and do presume Finder himself being the culprit with Hackintosh. Anyway freezes are gone since I´m using PathFinder. http://www.cocoatech.com/pathfinder/

Yeah, that is REQUIRED on ML under AMD CPU. I have a fairly poorly supported MSI mobo tho...

Think my issue was more NetRadiant than Quartz-X11 related. (or even iTunes). 1st time in two weeks the computer has even stuttered. Also, I was sick of the Tuxera NTFS warnings, so I switched to the Paragon 10 trial. No more errors/warnings, but much slower startups. Much faster transfers... hmmmm.
