Newbie struggling with all these .sit, .img, .bin, .shd (??) formats

Hi All,
first of all thanks for this wonderful site. I was never a Mac user, but always wanted (similar to Amiga Smile). I was always a hardcode PC guy, and now as emulation gets better and better it is my chance to dive into the world of Apple. So again, thanks to all who make this site possible.

And now to my problem Sad. Im using Basilisk on Windows, and while I managed to install few apps (from .sit files), i.e. Stuffit (3.5 and 5.5), WordPerfect (from .sit), I had an initial impression that everything in the Apple kingdom is as intuiitive as these initial installs.

So I took some time and downloaded some nice apps (like Photoshop, Bryce, TreePro, VistaPro), and now im stuck. It seems im not able to install any of them Sad.

For example Photoshop 3 sit when attacked with StuffIt, results in a folder with 7 or so .img files, that I have no clue what to do about. I read somewhere img can be handled by DiskCopy, so i took the one from Macgarden (that supposed to contain 3 versions). The bin file unpacked itself to sit file, that unpacked itself into .img, that i cannot handle, as have no DiskCopy - endless loop Smile

On the other hand i tried Photoshop 4 sit, that unpacked nicely, but the only thing i got is a subdirectory with Disk10.img file. The sit itself is like 7-9MB, the Disk10.img i something like 10kb? What to do next??

Seems that other applications, that im capable to unpack using stuffit will unpack just some single files into a directory, and I have no clue where to find an actuall binary that starts the up (assuming it unpacked at all, as the expand process completed in a blink of an eye).

Please help Smile

Is there any definitve guide how to unpack/install various formats?

btw, im currently working on Android version of Basilisk - http://droidmac.blogspot.com, thus i wanted to use my PC created hard disk volume on an Android device, for testing, play, etc.

Thanks in advance
Cheers
tomaswoj

I don't have time to talk, but this might help a bit:

Adding a couple of file formats; *.sea 'Self Extracting Archive', *.smi 'Self Mounting Image'

This disk image, mounted with BII, should be a good starting point to proceed from.

It comes with Stuffit expander and DiskCopy. Intact img files are mounted by double-click. If that does not work, double-click DiskCopy and select "Mount Image" from the menu.
This utility can mount a couple of disk image types too:

I didn't try Photoshop4, but I can take a look at that one later.

Thank You! It worked fine with this prepared MACOS755 disk. I've installed PS4.0 and Bryce without any issues Smile. It seems the secret is in proper stuffit and diskcopy combination. Once again thanks!!!

The PS4 download should decompress to a folder containing 22 Photoshop and 2 ATM disks, plus a textfile.
If you get something else, the inflating went wrong. Try Stuffit Expander 5.5 with the 7.5.5 image mentioned above, please.
For installing Photoshop, all 22 images must reside on the emulators HDD and must be mounted with DiskCopy in BII. That done, double-click the Photoshop installer on disk one.
If you can download the CD image you could mount it with the BII GUI after un-sitting it.
I might mirror that cd as zip or rar, if you wish.

.img files can also be handled with the Basilisk GUI application or something similar where you set the boot disk for your emulator. Move the .img files (means disk image) outside the emulator (preferably to the location where you've stored your emulator's boot disk) , and add the .img file to the emulator's drives list like you've done with your emulator's boot disk. Same goes to .cdr/.toast images.

On Windows, you may have to rename the file extension from .img to .hfv to get it recognized by the emulator (which seems to be the standard suffix of Macintosh disk images on Windows) .

The "big 3" Mac emus on Windows (Basilisk II, SheepShaver & Mini vMac), have no problem mounting Macintosh Disk Copy image files with a ".img" suffix (or .hfv). The only criteria is (if they are going to be mounted externally by the emulator app as disk drives) they can't be compressed Disk Copy image files - they must be Read/Write or Read Only Uncompressed. - And of course, HFS+ image files can't be accessed on pre 8.1 systems, emulated or otherwise, either.

But if your ".img" file is re-named ".hfv" and you also have HFVExplorer installed on Windows, all ".hfv" files do get a nice shiny red apple icon (with a bite mark) Beer

Thanks for remembering, uncompressed Disk Copy image files are very true.

Rendering Bryce images within emulation is painfully slow.
