Seeing the recent loss of megaupload, and the fallout from that (mediafire account takedowns and several other hosting sites closing altogether) i wanted to help host the lost files myself, however i never had the bandwith. Having recently got my line upgraded to 80/20 i decided to look into it again. After running into a few dead ends (software that wouldn't work, ideas that turned out not to be feasible) i thought up a almost blindingly simple solution, FTP. I create a virtual server running a second ftp server, people wanting to host files for mg on it contact me and would be given a folder on the server for them to share their files on, my definition of small files would be files up to 50mb (+ up to 10%, so if your file is just over you can still upload it) i would not stop you segmenting files and uploading them as 50mb segments so you could do that for larger files (or contact me and i can sort out the odd file over the limit). I could also have a public account with a lower filesize limit (probably 25mb)
so, anyone interested?
