Just picked up a PowerBook which was literally in line at the dump, and I was wondering if it supported booting in OS9. It's a 15 inch widescreen and it's also been refusing to recognize any of the system folders I give it, I read that these guys are very picky, but perhaps this model is just too new. Can a 1GHz, 15-inch widescreen PowerBook boot in OS 9; and, if so, can someone hook me up with that?

Depends on the 1 GHz Powerbook. If it has USB 2.0 & a Firewire 800 port, then no.
Check Everymac dot com for specs on the exact model.

SOAB, that's a true find. It'll run Classic just fine and it doesn't suffer from any of the limitations that affected the Titanium powerbooks, ie. Wireless is 100x better.

Sorry to branch a little off topic, but out of interest, what was the last laptop model that was able to boot OS 9?

@Mac Dro: Possibly the 1st PowerBook G4 1.0 (Ti) from 2002 was the last G4 laptop to support booting into OS 9. - And the iBook G3/900 14-Inch from Early 2003 was the last G3 laptop to support native booting into 9... So the iBook G3/900 may have been the last. Just going by info from "EveryMac dot com", not experience, so could be wrong.

Actually, all of the G4 Titanium PowerBooks from the original to the last-and-greatest - the 1 GH DVI model, boot into OS 9; but the last one (1 GH model) requires a model-specific build of 9.2.2 (available here on MacintoshGarden as a restore .img file) and provided by member Gavin. I have that model and currently in the process of downloading the file and burning a bootable CD to use in restoring the TiBook to it's original setup. Tried wiping the HDD, setting OS 9 drivers, and using a full retail installation disc of 9.2.2 but without success. ;-(

If such a thing ever existed, this would be an interesting upload.
Many have claimed to have this, but it's always turned out to be from a set of install discs for QS, MDD, PBG4 or other. OS9.2.2 was "current' for about 2 years and for your 1GHz PBG4 a particular set of install discs would be required - ones with the correct Mac OS ROM and included video drivers.

You know, bertyboy, I think you are absolutely right re it having the correct Mac OS ROM, etc. Hadn't considered that, or on the other hand, hadn't looked around for a full retail version of 9.2.2 for this purpose as it would appear to not be the solution for the 1GB TiBook either. I haven't taken time to attempt an install of the download yet, so can't speak from experience, but I'd like to ask any member of the forum who has experience installing this download for 9.2.2 for the 1 GH TiBook to chime in. Wish Gavin, former member who used to post on this topic was around. He contributed the upload found under Operating System, an upload which I thought resolved the issue for all but perhaps I'm mistaken. Maybe Gavin has something to add to this discussion? Gavin are you out there someplace? You seem to be the expert on this issue!

I have an install disc for an Onyx (550/667 VGA) PBG4 that installed 9.2.2 fine on my 1 Ghz DVI. I just updated the video drivers once it was installed and everything worked swimingly...

That image worked fine on my 1Ghz Ti Powerbook (M8859/A1026).
Starting from a blank hard drive:
1. I installed OSX 10.4 onto one partition, and created a 2nd partition for OS 9, installing the OS 9 disc drivers to that partition
2. Once in OSX, open Gavin's image file and drag the OS 9 folders to your OS 9 partition.
3. Select OS 9 partition as the startup disc / volume
4. Once in OS 9, use Toast 5 to burn the 9.2.2 image file to a blank CDR - ensuing you select 'Mac volume' and 'bootable' as options.
5. Enjoy your fresh. new OS 9.2.2 bootable install disc for your 1Ghz Ti Powerbook!
