Carl: check 'Toast Help' on the subject 'Mixed Mode'. Checked mine, v 5.2.3, and it says:

Recording a Mixed Mode CD
Mixed Mode combines one data track and one or more audio tracks (using the Audio format) in a single session.
• The data portion of a Mixed Mode CD can be any of the Toast data formats.
• The audio tracks can be set up using Audio format.
1 In the Toast window, click Data.
2 In the Data window, choose one of the Data formats.
3 Drag the data files you want to the Data window.
4 Next, click Audio.
5 Drag AIFF extracted audio files or audio tracks from a music CD onto the Audio window.
6 Click Data format again.
7 Insert a blank CD into your CD-Recorder.
8 Press and hold down the Option key as you click Record (still in Data format).
A message appears asking you to confirm that you want the mixed media option.

9 In the Record dialog box, select an option:
• If you want to add data to this CD later, click Write Session. (If your source volume contains more than 625 MB Write Session is disabled.)
• To close the CD so that no further data can be added later, click Write Disc.
10 When you see the message, "Your disc is ready," click Eject.

I've done that successfully but using the program Alcohol 120% in Windows
with the Carmaggeddon game (.ISO)
it kept the Game on the first track and the rest of the audio from the track2
and also can be played on any CD player.
I don't know if there's an Alcohol 120 version for the Mac.

I know most of users here are Faithful to only Mac,
but sometimes is really good to have a spare Windows Machine,
for less than $40 bucks you can get a decent one just for burning discs and testing.

Toast 5 can do it, Toast 6 and 7 seem incapable of it, although it's an advertised feature.

I'll do more testing when I get home. I'm beginning to suspect that it's been made incredibly simple in Toast 6 and 7, and our detailed instructions for v5 are just not needed.

Have you tried using OSX Disk Copy, saving as a CD/DVD Master (generates suffix .cdr). Toast (even back to Toast 5) reads this - all partitions - perfectly.

I've been wanting to do more testing too but haven't had time. I think using OSX (if you've got it) and saving as a CD/DVD Master (.cdr) is probably the way to go, too. I never actually burn discs, but as far as imaging and mounting goes, I know at some point I've opened a .cdr image in Toast 5.2.3 and it showed as having both data and audio on it. I could even listen to the audio tracks through Toast, though of course that portion couldn't be mounted.

Wish I had more time to test it to be sure...

I goofed around a little last night and got essentially the same result. The latest I have though is OS 10.2.8, so I don't know about later versions. I know I once had an image with the audio portion included. I wonder if it was some kind of .iso that somebody made with a PC or something.

IIRC Win apps like Alcohol/ISOBuster/Nero is capable of creating this kind of format ie 'Mixed Mode', as Euryale says. I also remember reading thet the ordinary ISO-format can´t hold this kind of information. But the other, as .nrg/.ccd/.sub/.img/.mds/.mdf etc claims to do it.

Toast 9, which I run under Leopard, allowes 'Mixed Mode' CDs. First choose 'Audio' then *Mixed Mode'. Haven´t tried in which way those shows up in Classic/SS or Basilisk. Time of the year…

I second Alcohol 120% as a superb CD/DVD copier. It has gotten a fine reputation for copying discs that other apps won't touch. If we are only talking about disc images here, you might be able to use VirtualBox or Parallels Desktop or similar, just to do the imaging.

@Carl: if you got the original disk the go for Toast to make a copy. It´ll keep all sessions from the disk. Copying with Disk Utility won't allowe a device copy. It´ll only handle a volume copy. If you want to make this a bit harder; get a copy of Shrinkwrap, setup Basilisk with Mac OS 7.6 or 8 and copy the original disk from there. Basilisk handles real disks and disk swapping much better than Sheepshaver.

Eurgh, kind of wake up the dead reviving an old topic like this…

Played around with this images of Carl (Dark Colony) and managed to make a 'Mixed Mode' CD with them. I also managed to install and run the game from this one, or at least starting with the intro sequence and then select 'Training' before quitting, all in SheepShaver.

Odd thing is the game functionality seems to depend on which version of SheepShaver I´m running (PPC only game). Also trying to run this under 9.2.x seems to be a no-no (though my System 9.2 is a bastarded 9.0.4 with no more speed/reliability/functions than 9.0.4 other than saying '9.2' under 'About this Mac').

Best run under 8.6 with recommended install and SheepShaver compiled 20091104, which is a tad slow on my PPC machine.

Update: tried install and run this on the real thing: PPC9600/8.6, which was a success! This is not my cup of tea, so it was not an extensive round I played. But it certainly ran further than my tries under SheepShaver.

Did you take any notes when you managed to make a mixed mode CD ? I'm following the Toast v7 instructions to the letter, and all I get are coasters, with just the data portion.

This definitely worked in Toast v5, and I kept detailed notes for doing it to copy my Age of Empires cd.
Notes here:

1. Open Toast
2. Click and hold "Other", select "Disc Image"
3. Mount the "Age of Empires Data.toast" image
4. Select Data CD - Mac OS (not extended)
5. Drag the mounted "Age of Empires" volume to the Toast Window
6. Select Audio
7. Drag the "Age of Empires Audio.toast" image to the Toast Window
8. Insert your blank CD
9. Hold OPTION key and click Record.
10. It will prompt advising whether to create a "mixed mode CD (not advised)"
11. Click "Yes"
12. Install from your burned CD.
13. Download and Install any updates from Macsoft.
14. Enjoy AoE with the music.

I'll try a few more times in Toast v7 ....

Success with Toast v7:

1. Lock both Toast disc images, just to prevent accidents.
2. Start Toast
3. Mount both disc images, if you use the "Mount Disc Image..." in the Utilities menu it won't clutter the Toast window.
4. Select "Data" tab, and then either "Mac Only" or "Mac + PC" under "Formats" depending on the data portion to be burned.
5. Select "HFS Standard" at the bottom of the panel on the left.
6. Drag the mounted Data Toast CD to the Data window, it should now show your Data CD, with the correct name, etc. If you get something called "My Disc" stop and start again.
7. Click the "Audio" tab and then "Mixed Mode CD" under "Formats".
8. Drag all the files from the mounted Audio CD to the window.
9. You may get a popup asking you for a more descriptive name for the Audio part.
10. Click the Burn button.

Tested with Shattered Steel, going to test with all the rest, even AoE. if I can find my original CD.

@ Bertyboy: all my testing is done in Toast 5.2.3 under Leopard. The installer and playing the game works great on a real Mac (PPC 9600) *but* I can´t get the audio part to be played by the internal audio player. When looking at the strip module it gets more and more messed up for each new command I choose.

Also when looking at the audio part in Toast the names of the tracks looks weird. Don´t know if Carl used an older version to make these two images and if that´s whats causing this.

Just burned the two images on one CD via sessions. I´ll try it´s functionality later. Also if you´re about to make a copy from real CD:s; mixed mode, hybrid, session burned or else. Try if your CD reader works with 'Device Copy' under menu 'Other'. This way you take a copy from the entire CD rather than the contained volumes.

Leopard wasn't even a gleam in Steve Jobs' eye when Toast 5 was released; you should try getting a newer version of Toast for use with your system, if Leopard's Disk Utility can't handle it.

Ehe, it´s because of the options in Toast 5 I keep it on my machine. 'Device Copy' for one and it has very small 'footprint', especially compared to version 9 and later.

Toast v5 should be even easier to burn a mixed mod e cd from the two images. Follow the 14 steps above that I used for AoE. If there's any issues, or anything not as it is described, note it and post back.

@bertyboy: could you get a playable Audio CD from your procedure?

For Toast 5, I'd get a version of Age of Empires that played the Audio tracks while I was playing the game. I never tried it on a regular CD player.

But I've put my old AoE copy cd into OSX and Toast v7 reports it as a multi-session cd !! I don't remember burning it like this (from Recorder menu, Disc Info item):

Strange that the Audio cd tracks (13 of them) are first.
Strange that it's 2 sessions, when the Mixed-Mode cd definition eplicitly states what it must be written in just one session.

No one's done it in Toast 10 before. It's up to you to try it as many times as it takes to get it working. Remember to keep a detailed step-by-step guide so you can post it here and share it with the rest of us.

You could start by reading the Toast 10 Help for how to burn a mixed-mode CD - Toast Help has a search function.
You could then try reading the posts from January 6 which explain step-by-step how to do it in Toast 5 and Toast 7. Start with Toast 7. It may take more than one try, It took me six or seven attempts for Toast 7, even though I had a working solution for Toast 5.

I know that it is possible to burn a disk image of an audio CD (through Toast), but does anyone know how to *mount* one under Mac OS 9?

It must be possible, but I don't still have Toast v5 to test it on.

In any case, Audio partitions don't have to have the same bit format as the Data partition sometimes has to (unless the author is Chris Crawford - he's done this before, hiding security question answers in the audio of an wargame explosion). So it could be quite fasible to rip the audio part from the full CD in iTunes and create a new disc image containing just the audio.

You can do a lot with audio cds, but you can't mount an image of one, at least not on the old Mac OS; believe me I've tried. You can save image data and open it with Toast or other programs, and you can burn it, but I've never found a way to mount it so that a game will use it from the hard drive. I hope somebody proves me wrong someday!

I can't get it to happen in OS9 wih Toast 5 either. Toast just doesn't want to mount the Audio part. If I use the "Mount Disc Image..." option in one of the menis, I get to select the audio disc image (in .sd2f format) but it gets an error trying to mount it. Toast suggests that the ISO 9660 Access or Foreign File Access extension is missing. They're installed, as is the Audio CD access. So if anyone has any ideas. As a pointer ...

BUT in OSX, with Toast v7, I can mount the game part and Audiopart (using the "Mount Disc Image..." option in one of the menus. And it works perfectly. For Age of Empires anyway, running under Classic.

Yes. Toast v7 also rips as .sd2f.

In OSX I can mount (again, ONLY by using the "Mount Disc Image..." option in one of the menus) either that ripped in Toast v5 or Toast v7. All the usual caveats apply, ie. lock the disk images before mounting.

The only access extension I have disabled in OS9 is "Joliet Volume Access" and it's not going to be that. Perhaps someone could try Toast v5 in OSX, and Toast v6.

I nearly asked what are the names of Audio CD partition and titles enclosed, because they show up in german on my german Mac OS X system: "Audio-CD" and "2 Audio-Titel".

Switching to an english user account of my hardware, re-inserting the CD again, I saw its english names:
"Audio CD" and "2 Audio Track".

I just burned both the Audio and Data portion of Age of Empires to a disc using Toast 10 on my MacBook Pro running Lion and played AoE successfully (with CD audio) on an old Pismo. It can be done!

The audio and data volumes both mounted on the Desktop as separate icons, so I'm not sure that's supposed to happen, but I'll take what I can get.

Basically it was similar to some of the above people have done, in that I download both of the images here from Macintosh Garden, then drag the Age of Empires audio image into Toast (which automagically appears in the Audio section of Toast), and then switch over to the Data tab and select "Mac & PC" and drag the AoE data image drag into the Mac section. Then cross your fingers and burn.
