Problem setting up Basilisk II

Hello there,
I've been using the SoftMac emulator for quite some time, because it was very easy to set up,
but it has some drawbacks like limited RAM allocation and the most frustrating..NO SOUND!
(specially to me since I am a Musician)

So I've been trying to change and setup Basilisk (in Windows XP) with no success,
when I open it after configuring, I just get a black screen that does nothing and I have to bring up the windows task manager to get rid of it,

I installed the GTK runtime and the SDL according to the guide, and I know I did this right because
later I try to run SheepShaver with OS 9 (just to give it a shot) and unexpectedly Worked fine!
So I got a good SheepShaver without really going for it,
but I want Basilisk 'cuz SheepShaver is a bit Slow on my PC

(as you probably know, Basilisk and Sheepshaver use these same files as well)

I tried with several ROMs (Quadra650,Performa,newworldrom, etc..) with the same results
-I use the Quadra650 Rom for SoftMac-

I suspect is one of the ROM, but Iam not sure..

any help would be greatly appreciated...Thanks!

The black screen thing is a long, long standing bug that seems to randomly affect people. Here is one thread on the matter which suggests a solution. Read down to the end to see an easier one than what the original poster suggests:

newworldrom is PROBABLY for SheepShaver, and will not work with Basilisk II. What's the file size?

Also, try out mini vMac ... it's the best but it only works for the Mac Plus (and soon, the Mac II ... if you want to compile it yourself or use a variation, you can get partial Mac II support now.)

The black screen is not a ROM problem. It's a regular and frequent bug:

http://www.emaculation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5683&highlight=black+sc...

and so on.

The link I posted in my first reply suggests a solution.

If the solution doesn't work, another option is to use an alternate version of the emulator built from older sources:

http://www.open.ou.nl/hsp/downloads/BasiliskII_27_08_2008.zip

That version should not have the bug.

Thanks but I confirmed it's not the ROM problem (I use the newworldrom with SheepShaver)
I tried the Quadra and Performa roms

I tried the first solution but it didn't work either

so, Iam going to try the older version you are talking about...

Thanks!..

That's just the executable, and I just exchanged the .exe file

and It Works!!

although the other GUI doesn't quite complement with this .exe file,
the only thing, is that it only allows me to use millions of colors, I can't change to 256 colors
( I checked the control panels and everything) and I even installed Mac OS 7.5.3 on a different Drive just to make sure and it does exactly the same

but good thing is that now I have sound, more memory, millions of colors, and it doesn't flicker like SoftMac...

Thanks, I appreciate your help! Smile

Here, try dropping this GUI in:

http://www.emaculation.com/basilisk/BasiliskIIGUI.exe

That should let you change the colors (in the GUI).

For the record, if you want to experiment, there is an archive of Basilisk II versions here:

I think that R3 and older might also work for you.
