I downloaded the original quake from Macgarden and it was a great trip down memory lane.
Then I came across this GL version:

I copied the ID folder to my Intel Mac and it plays awesome!
It was like having a brand new game!

I've played this using fruitz-of-dojo's OpenGL engines for Quake 1 and II which are still available via here: http://www.fruitz-of-dojo.de/php/download.php4 - They were excellent and this new TenebraeQuake looks great. Cheers.

I'd really like to know the differences between those and the PC version (besides maybe the year they came out). Not having a Mac, is it simply better graphics?

The actual games are same, you can use the files from either the Windows or Mac versions to play. The fruitz of Dojo engines give openGL support and better rendering of the graphics (feels like a whole new game).
For a very similar Windows Quake engine look at the Telejano Quake Engine for Quake 1 (good screenshots). http://telejano.berlios.de/
