RAM CHARGER

I've got an original disk of OptiMem RAM CHARGER, along with the 2.1.2 update. It works on Mac OS 7. It's a really nice memory management tool.

I'd be willing to upload it if someone can tell me how to remove my name, which appears on the desktop panel (yeah, I didn't lock all my install disks back then).

I'm sure I can do this with ResEdit, the only problem is, I have no idea what to look for, and I haven't used ResEdit before except to just take a look at this utility this morning.

Open the program in ResEdit and look for a resource that seems to be registration-related. Might be called reg or licence or something like that. Double click it to see what strings it contains. If your name is in there try changing it or deleting the resource entirely. Do this on a copy in case the app corrupts when the resource is edited or deleted.

I have tested RamCharger 8. It does not work on Mac OS 9.2.2.

xy, Version 3 of RAM CHARGER will only work if you have an official copy of Version 2. I've already downloaded and updated my version yesterday. It amazes me that Jump Development is still providing FTP for their old OS software (I think they're defunct).

Once I get v2 squared away (removing my name), I'll upload it here and then it can be updated with v3.

Version 8.1 RAM Charger is a minor update to version 8.0.1 RAM Charger. This release is required for users running MacOS 8.1 with virtual memory enabled, and those using Office 98.

This is what I found. I checked all of the files included in the install disk, and none of the code had anything pertaining to "license" (i.e. 'lic') or "registered" (i.e. 'reg'). However, my name appears in the "Heads Up Display" which is seen on the desktop once RAM CHARGER is launched. So I did a search for something eluding to "heads up". I found what appears to be the Heads Up Dialog, and here's what it contains. Now that I think I've found it, could someone tell me what to do next?

I am guessing... just delete the code from 0005D6 through 000678?

Nah that code is just the hex version of the ansi text you're seeing on the right side. Can you see your name anywhere in the right side? It may be in an encrypted block somewhere, which would mean trial and error to locate it.

More likely in the Data fork - for which ResEdit is no use. FEdit or similar may find it. HexEdit was the other I think.

Yeah, I just spent another hour looking... I can't find my name anywhere... it's useless using ResEdit. bertyboy you are probably right... I'll see if I can get my hands on FEdit somewhere.

[EDIT] bertyboy: HexEdit did the trick, lickety-split! I'm going to test the software out on my PPC before I upload.

The only thing is, some might not want to download an app that has been altered. I suppose a quick virus scan will put people at ease, along with comments on how it's functioning. The *only* thing I am altering is my first and last name, as well as the "Business" I entered back in 1996.

Glad you found it! I don't think anyone here is going to be that paranoid about you altering an app to remove your info. Once the app works that's the important thing.

You can probably just replace your personal info with zeros (enter the zeros in the hex part, not the ansi part).

Well, I was able to remove my name and organization and replace them with others. Now I know why I entered my name and affiliation back then... the software won't let you install unless you enter these fields. It probably wouldn't let me install from a locked floppy and and that's why it was unlocked in the first place.

The problem is now the modified version won't allow for installation. It quits after starting the install (after entering the new name and new affiliation). I get some kind of message like the disk can't be accessed. The developer obviously has this disk locked down really tight. They wanted you to alter the install software, thus making it copy proof.

Oh well, I tried. If someone would be interested to see if they can get it to work just let me know and I'll upload it to an external site or E mail it you.

This is your mission, should you decide to accept it.

There used to be a nice little program called Anonymity that allowed one to reset the registration details.
