Rather amused after install

I have to admit, last night after installing 7.5 on the Quadra I was amused at the fact that I eWorld was part of the install. I so remember being on that when it was brand new. I also remember the day it went off the air. It was such a nice community to be a part of back when 68k's were still popular and Quadra's were the big boy on the block. I also remember paying dearly to be on it paying something like 5 bucks an hour. Time really flies when you talk Mac. It's ashamed that AOL killed it, however I being hard core Mac used ResEdit and put all eWorlds sounds into AOL. I never cared for the "Welcome to eWorld" sound but the girls voice saying "You have mail" was far better than the AOL "You've got mail" guy.

The other thing that amused me is that I found the AOL app on my G4 and my login still works and AOL is still around? LOL I had no idea as I haven't used it in eons. I thought it died off years ago. I haven't payed a cent in over 10 years for my account so it was a shocker to say the least that it still existed. I know that AOL Messenger is still popular but I didn't think the original app was. Most of the features no longer work like the links on the main page or keyword search. Of course there is far fewer chat rooms but no busy signals for a change.

Funny thing is not only did my login still work but I still have the original email from "Steve Case" at aol congratulating me for being one of the first 5,000 members of the AOL community. Ironically...I noticed that was nearly 20 years ago and even then my screen name for both eWorld and AOL was Macnut9765. I wish eWorld still worked rather than AOL.

An interesting read, thanks for sharing your mind. I have never been a member of neither eWorld nor AOL, it wasn't really big here (Germany) anyway. However, I love to read stories about it and I can relate to the fascination of being part of it. In fact, I wish there would be such a small "walled garden" for our old Macs, where you could log in, play some simple games together, chat etc.

That would really make a cool project. (supporting old Macs + sheepshaver)

Anyone up for the task? Laughing out loud
