Replacement Laptop Batteries

After reading Themacmeisters post on his iBook, i just wondered,

Has anyone ever brought a replacement battery of a discontinued type that has actually worked?

I brought one, held one charge then died. My brother i think has brought two on two separate occasions and neither have been functional either

If there is an overall negative response about this, might i recommend that we put in the wiki somewhere to stay away from them

I bought one for my iBook last year off a buy/sell forum. It was a genuine Apple one, never used and works fine. There seem to be issues with non-Apple replacements, and particularly with higher-capacity ones. I'm working from memory here but I think the issue is that they don't fully charge because the chip that manages that assumes they're the standard capacity.

I've got a third party battery and a genuine Apple battery, both have an annoying habit of reporting about 60% - 70% then just cutting out. When started again from the charger, the iBook reports 1%. It's infuriating, but only seems to happen in 1 of my 2 iBooks.

Those batteries are dead. This happens when you leave the laptop plugged into AC all the time with the battery in place. The li-ion cells pack up from lack of activity. My original iBook battery went the same way after a few years so I've been more careful with the replacement one.

Huh, didn't know that. I'd better be more careful in the future! In fact, I've got one plugged in now Shock

"Apple recommends charging and discharging its battery at least once per month".

This is for folks who tend to leave their PB plugged in all the time. This is my procedure with my replacement.
