SheepShaver: Colors invert when I click text fields

I've been running SheepShaver on my G4 Leopard machine for a while, now, without any serious problems until now. Whenever I click a text field in Mac OS 9.0.4, the entire screen freezes, and all colors below the text field become inverted. Anyone have a solution for this? It happened in an older version of SheepShaver, and I upgraded to the latest but have the same problem still.

Figured out the solution: SheepShaver doesn't like 256 color mode for some reason or another

@karl128k:

Perhaps this is relevant?

Apple decided to remove the 256 color palette from OS X with newer revisions of the OS X(Did it screw something up?)

- Something to ponder upon anyway and hopefully is not digressing... anyway... outcome solution for above link's issue was setting gamma to 1.8 - HTH

Which Mac ROM are you using ? And how much VRAM is allocated ?

When on the PowerBook G4, I had this error, too, but the emulated machine freezes also, when it comes to the inverted colours.

Now, on the MacBook Pro (probably also the newer version of Sheep), this error no longer happens to me.

Just to clarify, my SheeShaver v2.3 emulates Mac OS 8.6 and Mac OS9.0.4, both in 256 colours, with the iMac Update ROM, with no issues at all. 256MB RAM, 1024x768 with 30Hz refresh.

karl, so what's different ?

I had this problem too but it only occured when I ran SS in same colurs as the surrounding system and mostly in "Millions of Colours".

Ah, you may have something there. Different colour maps, but I'm not sure why it would only happen after clicking in a text box.

Other actions might also trigger it, I just haven't found any yet.

Thanks for all the replies. On my OS X Leopard machine, in the Displays settings, 256 colors is grayed out, so that might be an issue. I should note that 16 colors worked fine. Also, I con't remember where I got my ROM or what type it is. When I opened the ROM in TextEdit, it showed me this:

iMac,1 PowerMac1,1 PowerBook1,1

MacROM for NewWorld.

The rom file then continues with a lot of garbage.

Anyway, 256 colors isn't that important for me; I was only hoping the emulation would be a bit faster that way.

How many colours are you running in on your OSX Leopard machine ?

So far I've presumed that you have used the OS 9.0.4 Screens / Displays control panel to switch the emulated Mac to 256 colours (leaving the OSX 10.5 environment in Thousands or Millions of colours.

You are correct; I have used the OS 9 control panel to change the colors to 256, leaving OS X set to millions of colors. In OS X, the 256 color option in System Preferences is, in fact, greyed out.
