sit files showing up as doc

Hi a few games I've downloaded that should be sit files, show up as doc files. Using Basilisk II

" I get error messages such as "could not be opened because the application program that created it could not be found"

"Could not find an extension with the appropriate transaction"

examples are:
Jeopardy
Super Munchers
Activision Action Pack

thanks

Depends on your OS methinks.

Its the old problem of lost resource forks on non Mac systems, I presume.
Can you open the file from the emulators HDD via Stuffit´s File menu?
That way it might just work…

Other than that, restore the resource fork from a valid Stuffit image.
There are some tools to achieve that.

Use ResEdit to change the type/creator codes. .SIT files don't need resource forks, but certain versions of Stuffit will not be able to read them if the codes are wrong.

Also try opening Stuffit and using File->Open.

Don't double-click .sit & .bin files etc, that you've move into an emulator's hard drive from a host OS.

Try dragging the .sit or .bin over onto an icon of the Stuffit Expander application, release the mouse button when the Stuffit icon darkens (highlights). This should launch Stuffit Expander to extract the archive OK at this point.

On the emulator, use Stuffit Expander 5.5 if the emulator's OS supports running it, as this version handles most Stuffit compressed files made from all Stuffit versions (not .sitx tho').

Using MacOs7 or OS8

Stuffit does not recognize it as a sit file. (when dragging it to Sutffit, Stuffits icon will not highlight)(will not recognize it to open it).

When I "get info" it says its a doc file.

I'm trying to figure out how ResEdit works, need a how to guide of that Smile.

Thanks again for all the suggestions

Take a look at Creator Changer, you might find it easier.
