Sound for game on System 6

So, I'm trying to run Fool's Errand, a fairly obscure game. I've got it going on Mini vMac running 6.0.8, but there's no sound. The developer states on his website, "The Fool’s Errand soundtrack stopped working when Apple dropped Synthesizer Sounds from the Sound Manager with the introduction of Mac OS 7".

I guess my general question is whether anyone knows how to get the sound working? As far as I can see, the 6.0.8 system that I downloaded from Apple didn't install Sound Manager. The only copy of Sound Manager I could find was on a CD of King's Quest VII, but a) I can't figure out where to install it, and b) for all I know, it's for Mac OS 7 anyway. Any ideas about where to get the proper Sound Manager for 6.0.8, and how to install it?

Why do you call it ´a fairly obscure game´ ?
just curious

@milford: On System 6.0.8 or earlier, Control Panels and Extensions are installed directly into the System Folder, sometimes termed as "INIT's". The "Sound" control panel gets installed with System 6, this is accessed via the "Control Panel" dialog located under the "Apple" menu. Basically its just a slider to raise or lower the sound level.

I haven't tried Fool's Errand on Mini vMac, but sound and the Control Panel access to adjusting sound levels is working for me OK on Mini vMac (SSW 6.0.8 + stable release of MvM).

Thanks for the reply. Sound in general is working fine: beeps are audible, and the Sound control panel works. But my feeling was that the Sound control panel wasn't the same as the "Sound Manager" extension (a feeling corroborated by the fact that the sound in Fool's Errand doesn't work). The Sound Manager was included with Mac OS 7, but as best I can tell -- and I can't even find any decent documentation on this! -- it must be installed separately on System 6. Perhaps surprisingly, I can't seem to find it anywhere on the internet, though I could well have missed it, since I'm new to all this. Now that I know where it goes -- thanks! -- can anyone direct me to where I might find a System 6 compatible Sound Manager? (My suspicion is that the one I have from King's Quest VII is Mac OS 7 only.) And my apologies if I'm wrong about all this and there is no separate "Sound Manager" for System 6; if that is the case, then I'm unsure what to do about getting the game's sound working...

@Euryale

Sorry for any offense -- as I said, I'm new to retro mac world (though not new to Macs; my Mac Plus is still in a closet somewhere), and it all seems a bit obscure to me still.

It also looks like Sound Manager is included in many Quicktime installers. However, the Quicktime 2.5 installer that I could find appears to be too advanced. Does anyone have an installer for Quicktime 1.5 or 1.6.1? It is included on many game installation disks, so any game disk from the early 90s might have it (for instance, the very first Journeyman Project appears to have it, not that I have that CD myself).

@milford: Now I have to ask: Which Fools Errand are you playing? The one you can DL from here (under "T" for "The Fools Errand") or the copy from thefoolsgold.com? I've just tried both, and the one from here has sound when played on SSW 6.0.8 (such as it is), no "Sound Manager" is required and The Fools Errand from thefoolsgold.com does not have sound at all. Neither are original copies and both have been modified to some degree, but the one from here still has audible sounds when played on System 6.0.8 or earlier.

Ah, thank you! I was using the one from thefoolsgold.com, as you surmised. I never imagined the one here would be different; that's quite amazing that someone hacked it a bit to restore its functionality. Of course, it's just a few beeps and blurps, it seems, but I'm glad to have it resolved. Thanks so much for your expert help.
