Spinning Beachball of Death

I just realised that I have, almost without trying, avoided the dreaded Spinning Beachball of Death on Mac OS X. My Mac backups cover all OS from 6.08 -> 9.2.2, but I switched over to Win98/XP just about the time of the OS X introduction. My interest in Apple waned over the years, as they trialled many different themes (and they're STILL CHANGING!). My interest only returned when OSX86 became mainstream around Leopard 10.5.2. I have a pre-release version of Mac OS X 10.0.1, which is buggier than hell, and software written for 10.1 will not run on it

I remember trying to install 10.3 onto an old iMac (slot loading) with not enough RAM, and no eject on the CD drive. It was a trying experience...

I can in all honesty say that I have not experienced the worst that OS X has to offer. The SBOD is almost entirely a historical entity these days. Who knows, the animated cursor may have already been replaced in Snow Leopard!

I must admit that I have OSX86 10.5.8 running positively sweetly on my Intel Core2Duo E7200 box. I am currently using it to rip all my DVDs over to the XBOX, using RipIt, Handbrake and Cyberduck. I do the same thing on WinXP, except with DVDShrink, Handbrake and Filezilla - but the Mac experience is as smooth as silk - no slower than XP - and a joy to accomplish. I am sure I will make a permanent switch once the game emulators are more mature (Dolphin, PCSX2 etc). Some are coming along nicely - Mupen64 Plus 1.5 is the only emulator I know that can play Super Mario 64 without a single glitch, from start to finish.

PS. Portal sucks balls - about 1/3 the framerate of WinXP, and bug-ridden.

heh, interesting - I skipped the whole beginning of OS X as well. I used 9.2 on a PowerTower Pro, and then the next machine I had was a Windows machine donated by a friend (I was missing out on all the new games)!!! That was in, say, 2002 or so. I didn't get a new Mac until about 2005 when I purchased a very awesome 12" iBook G4 1.33ghz and finally realized just how thoroughly rad OS X was. Oh, in fact, I got the very last iBook G4 model before the MacBook came out. Somehow I knew from rumours that the model was being discontinued, and the price was dropped by about $50 in the store too - clearing away the last of the iBook stock. Fun times.

I would really love a 25th Anniversary Mac, and a G4 Cube, but I fear I cannot come close to affording either. I nearly bought a "troublesome" first-gen PlayStation3 for $99, but the "troublesome" tag scared me off.

I might be able to pick up a cheap AMD 64 with flatscreen for $10 at the nearby Online Access Centre (who are obviously upgrading). I could use the second monitor on the eMac or iBook (same connectors). The eMac hack allows use as a full 2nd monitor too!
