Stuffit archives being replaced by zip archives

Hi everyone!

I have been kind of away from this site lately, been sort of busy. I have dropped by ocassionally since the upload increase size on the site, have been preparing some stuff, but something that has been bothering me lately is the sudden increase of zip files instead of stuffit files, in fact, as an example, my timbuktu 4 upload which was in .sit format has now been replaced by a zip file. Have i missed a new policy or what led to this change? Maybe it's just me but i really hate to handle zip files under OS 9 or earlier. I appreciate any of your comments. Thanks!

The .zip file on this site were only intended to store .cdr, .toast, or .iso image files only.
I have repacked the Timbuktu Pro 4 page to make the burnable disc image file.

Hi macjames, good to see you about.

Zip has always been acceptable here for compressing .cdr files (this info is visible on the Edit page, just below where you can upload a file). However, it gets used a lot by some more than others and not only for CD media.

I don't have many problems on Mac OS 7 - 9 with zip files because I use MacZip, which I think is about as good it can get for this compression type, on a classic Mac OS.

I don't approve of removing uploaded files without discussion, tho'. - You can always see who's done what on a page by clicking on Revisions and going backwards through the revisions to see what changes have taken place and by whom (and perhaps bring it to the person's attention).

Also, in the case of your Timbuktu 4 .sit file, if you go back a couple of revisions on the page you'll see its still there (just no longer visible on the current revision page). So you can still DL it even now.

If you want, it can be returned to the current page. Just ask - or do it yourself (with a please don't remove note on the page).

Stuffit (of suitable vintage, usually 5.5, sometimes 7) is much more convenient for me. I also like to have the relevant icon for the CD image showing in OS 9 and earlier, and this is preserved if compression is done in OS 9 etc. Overall, I only use zip if it is an OS X only file or is a bin/cue. In a nutshell I much prefer the stuffit compression and I think that this is more consistent with the vintage of most files we have here. Basically, I think the tendency to use zip is probably because it is easier and quicker to do this in OS X which is what most of us use for regular use, but that is not really an excuse.

EDIT: I am talking about CD images only in the above.
