Temporary Joe's SheepShaver Problems Episode 2: The Missing Buttons

On my computer, I have a bunch of emulators and other stuff (DOSBox) to allow me to have a vast amount of compatibility (there's relatively few applications and stuff that I can't run). I decided to install SheepShaver on my Mac (now that I have time).

SheepShaver I've heard doesn't run as well as BasiliskII (which has problems of its own...)

Here's what I did.

1. Used SheepShaver Oct/2010 revision on Mac OS 10.6.4 MacBook Summer 2010.
2. Copied the PowerMac G3 ROM from the "Passed checksum list" from one of the links on Macintosh Garden (forgot where) into the SheepShaver folder. SheepShaver doesn't launch.
3. Changed the file association in Xray to make the ROM read as a generic folder (not as an Atari 2600 emulator file). Still doesn't launch.
4. Renamed to Mac OS ROM. Still doesn't launch.
5. Downloaded the "Redundant Robot" ROM, put it in there, still didn't launch.
6. Used Xray [again] to make the ROM disassociate from Stella (aforementioned Atari 2600 emulator). SheepShaver launches finally, leaving me wondering why the PowerMac G3 file didn't run, but this "Redundant Robot" thing does. The flashing question mark floppy comes up. Expected, but the mouse-within-the-emulator is jumpy. I quit SIDPLAY, an application that emulates the Commodore-64's sound chip (and thus, plays Commodore-64 sound files). It doesn't seem to help SheepShaver's performance very much.

So, has anyone else had problems with the "jumpy mouse"? How do I fix it?

In my experience, the performance between Basilisk and Sheepshaver is quite the opposite. But neither have given me a jumpy mouse.

I haven't installed the main OS yet. I'm guessing the problem is supposed to end when I install the OS?

I did not encounter big problems with BII nor SS. Your MacBook should be a perfect host for SheepShaver.
Some cases come to my mind though.
Use Oldworld ROM from Redundant or the NewWorld ROM as written in the guide at Emaculation only.
Check the "Ingnore Illegal Memory Access" box on 64 bit hosts in the SS GUI.
Copy all files you want to execute/inflate to the emulated HDD (not to emulators desktop).
In the Graphics tab of BII´s or SS´s GUI you can type in ANY desired size for the emulators window.
Assign 1GB of RAM to the emulated system, if possible.
Always do a clean install of the desired MacOS. Pre-installed images may help for setup, but don´t use them on a long term. You WILL run into problems.

SS emulates a (very fast) PPC 604 cpu only. Some apps may not work as they did on real 604 cpus.
Software made for G3 or better, will of course not work at all.

OK, new problem. I was setting up the hard drive, but the screenshots at Emaculation and my computer aren't identical. They're missing the Browse buttons, and thus, impossible to tell what I'm opening is really what I want.

Solved the jumpy mouse: I just set the Refresh Rate from 7.5 Hz to 60 Hz. Success!

Just drag the ROM file in its place in the GUI.
The usual procedure on a Mac. Smile

I've sunken a lot of time into this (and hard disk space): I had intended to run Mac OS 8.6 but there wasn't a retail copy on hand, so I had to try 8.5, which also didn't work. Eventually I found a retail edition of 8.1, but now I won't be able to run any CarbonLib programs, plus I lose all those enhancements found in 8.5 and 8.6.

Then I mounted the 8.1 on Mac OS X (locked of course) and tried it again. No dice. I'm giving up...these Mac OS install disks and the emulated SS hard disk are taking up a lot of space. I also found out that the ROM from RR was Old World. Huh.

I'm deleting most of the Mac OS 8.x stuff and the emulated SheepShaver disk...hopefully I can try again someday with better success.

Sorry to hear that.
Did you try http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/apple-system-software-recovery-cd-2 for 8.6?
OS9 is on the seperate SSR3 CD which is a retail disk in fact: http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/mac-os-904.
My "Classic" folder is 25GB right now, but it holds some disk images harldly used.
If you wish, you might discuss more specific issues about the Shaver at Emaculation to find assistance.

No problem. I have a few other things to do right now, and I'd love to get back into SheepShaver. Like how my BasiliskII became a living homage to my grandfather's LC, right down to the wallpaper, I'm shooting for SheepShaver to be like his/ours PowerWave tower, which died in late 2003. As soon as I get SS up and running, I'll try to look into adding some of the features I remember.
