The Tale of the Exploding IIci

I found a IIci at the tip today (and keyboard/mouse). I started it up before attaching the screen (via 6-pin adaptor) and it sounded like it started up perfectly. While I went to collect the monitor from inside the house, my room filled with acrid plastic-smelling smoke, and the power supply is surely fried now Sad

It is a shame, as it was maxed out with RAM. Sadly, there were no "standard" connectors inside whatsoever (good one Apple!). I had a spare Cache Ram chip somewhere, but that is all over now.

I'll keep my eyes open for more.

On an unrelated note, I fixed the DVD burner in my 700MHz G4 iMac. I think I knocked the adaptor power out when I sealed it back up.

Did you throw it out? Because it is *far* from dead

The smoke is from the paper ac filter caps in the PSU failing, if you take it apart you'll see one or more of them are cracked / blown apart. The caps are easy to replace, but they are also not critical to the system, you'll probably find it'll run fine without them. (Although it's probably best to replace them in the long run)

It's a spectacular failer when it happens and you would think it's fetal, but it's actually a really easy fix Smile

I threw it out, but kept all the RAM Smile

The lack of standard expandability was a deciding factor. Really needed some PCI slots to make it worthwhile (network/USB etc.)
