Uploading files bigger than the 400mb size limit?

I'm trying to upload The Time Warp of Dr. Brain CD to the site, and I've got it all ready to go in a .cdr file made following the instructions on this site. The trouble is that the cdr file is 600+mb, and a .zip file of it is still too big (434mb). I've tried uploading the zip file, but it stops at 400.01mb.

So how exactly can I get the CD uploaded here?

The only way that I can think of is to use 7-Zip to compress the cdr file into a .7z file (which would be 383mb big) and then compress that into a zip file (which wouldn't make it any smaller but would be one of the file types that can uploaded to here) and then upload that to the site. But I hesitate to do that because I'm not certain everybody here knows how to unpack a .7z file (it's actually easy, Stuffit Expander for Mac OS X and 7-Zip for Windows can both do it for free).

I suppose it's also possible to make a multiple part compression file of some sort, but I don't think I have anything that can do that.

Any suggestions?

On Mac OS X, I'm using Stuffit 14, its menu item offers to stuff using menu item 'Earlier version' -> 'Stuff (.sit)' (Keyboard shortcut Option-Command-2).
Using this method, it'll get better compression than the Mac OS X zip format.

Could you use a third party file hosting site, like MegaUpload ? No subscription is required. This would give us a link that would be valid for 7 days, enough time for some of us to download it and upload to other third party sites. Those of us with MegaUpload accounts could quickly add the file to our library, extending the life of the file to 90 days since the last download.

No compression is required, unless your broadband allowance is tight.

Stuffit versions since 3.5 (I believe) offered the option to split/join files.
For using the Classic software up to version 7, you would need a suitable Mac/Emulator of course.

If you want your upload to be available for "common people", you might consider to upload it to an external server like Multiupload in addition.

@IIGS User - I don't have Stuffit 14, the best I can get is Stuffit Standard 7.0.3 from this site. Using it I got a 399.6mb .sit file, which is under the limit, but so close to it that I'm not sure it would actually make it. It would also take about 5 hours to upload.

@bertyboy - I could try that, but uploading takes a long time (5 hours for 400mb). I'll see if I can find a better way before I try uploading to a third party file hosting site.

@24bit - Could you please tell me which copy of Stuffit here on the site has that option? I can't seem to find it.

Stuffit 3.5 which 24bit mentioned is on SheepMyShaver's mediafire.

I can't unpack the bin files. Every copy of Stuffit expander I use says that the bin files were made by a version of Stuffit newer than the one I'm using to unpack them. And then they keep asking for the second part, even after I direct them to it. What am I not doing right?

Try expanding the 2nd & subsequent parts (if any) 1st, When finished, extract the 1st part file (into same folder or where you extracted the previous parts).

Stuffit Lite 3.5 and higher, Deluxe 3.0 and higher all have .bin support, you also get it with Stuffit Expander (all versions) if DropStuff has also been installed.

Older version than I've mentioned = better for compatibility

And I've noticed, the upload-finished files are a bit smaller in size than on the local hard disk, so you yould try to upload your 399.6 file to the internal server, too. You could even upload to internal server some time later, but a current external d/l mirror is very appreciated for now.

Stuffit 5 is here: http://www.mediafire.com/?dfrx36feu97e885
Stuffit 7 should be here: http://www.mediafire.com/?jejuztymjy4
I was using 3.6, 5 and 7 in SheepShaver, but would recommend 7 with the "faster" compression for backward compatibility. Some files of mine were deflated and split with 7 to fit in Mediafire´s 200GB limit. From todays view I would really recommend Multiupload, because it never dropped connection at uploading and did not loose my files, so far.

Edit: For .bin files, there should be a solution with some full version of Stuffit too.

I've managed to upload a zipped copy of the .cdr file to megaupload. Here's the address: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=38C6VWYN

Somebody else here can probably figure out the best way to make the file more permanently available. Meanwhile, I've got two other games to upload here, but thankfully neither of them are as big as this one.

Seems they want money now, if you just want to add your upload to someone else´s collection.
Bad world.
Guess I can DL it and reupload to Multiupload, if nobody else is willing to do so.

Compress it to .sit format(I use StuffIt Deluxe 7.0 on OS9), segment it to 195 MB files and upload to mediafire.com. I think it's the best 3rd party file hosting service - files exist without any validity period. Hovewer the limit for free account is 200MB per file, but you can bypass it by segmenting archive.
