Volume68k.org: public AppleShare server for 68k software

To the Macintosh Garden community and to all people interested in old Mac computers, I present Volume68k.org.

Overview

Volume68k.org is an AppleShare server (hosted on a Linux machine with netatalk) which contains a collection of 68k Mac software that I found online. I will be adding to the collection and am allowing people to submit items to it as well.

Purpose

The purpose of this server is to allow retro Mac enthusiasts to easily get software directly for their old Mac, whether it is a physical computer or an emulator, with a minimum of requirements. Many of the applications can be run directly from the network disk.

Connecting

You can connect through the Chooser, with volume68k.org as the server IP address. I can add detailed instructions on the website if people would like.

Notes

The initial software collection is from a torrent that I found. Some of the files are in Russian. There are a lot of things in different locations (some duplicates) so I may reorganize it a bit. Also, the current VPS host is sometimes slow, so I may switch to a faster one. I have not tested most of the software in the collection. Using any of it is at your own risk.

Contributing

If you would like to add something to the collection, put it in the publicly writable folder "Dropbox." Then message me and I'll move it into the main area if I think it is good.

If you would like to contribute towards hosting costs, please send bitcoin to 1M8xLydfjzaDgXBRtUofBcufU3eyYieuQX.

I hope you all find this useful. Let me know what you think.

Interesting. File size (upload/download) limitations? Also. 68k software only? i.e. No PPC (FAT or native)?

I didn't know that Chooser could do this. But it does and it WORKS! I connected instantly.

You have a good starting collection as well. But it is hard to find things. You should organize a bit more with categories besides "Applications", "Games", "Documents", etc.

This looks like a VERY nice resource.

Works fine from Mac OS X's Finder menu item "Go to" -> "Connect with Server..." (Cmd-K) as well.

I'm glad you hear that you like it and are able to connect. I think it is great that this can be accessed on anything from Mac OS 7 to Mountain Lion (I think).

There are no bandwidth limitations. For uploads, make sure the size is reasonable. You can see that the disk has 9GB free, and 32GB capacity (of which 10GB is taken by the server OS. So there is 12GB of content.) It is good for small or medium sized things.

I am thinking 68k software only, for now at least. FAT is ok. Maybe later this can expand to include PPC.

Yes, it is hard to find things. Some things are in more than one place. I would like to reorganize it, maybe making use of aliases. I haven't yet decided exactly how. For now you'll just have to make your way through the various folder hierarchies.

I do. Thank you. Its really good to have a browse of this type of file system. I connected via Basilisk II (Build 142, Windows) running OS 8, AppleTalk over TCP/IP

I even found an item that I had originally packaged & uploaded only to TMG, "ClarisWorks 5 OpenDoc" Smile

There is a lot of interesting software items tho' and some very hard to come by drivers & utilities.

This is a nice site Wink btw, as for the sorting, finders search function in osx works a treat, so if you know what your looking for it isn't too much of a problem

I can't take much credit for the collection, since I found it online. But I will add things as I find them, and as people submit them.

My friend Fabian started a Google+ community for the site:

I'm sorry, I'm terribly confused. How is a user going to be able to mount this AFP volume over TCP under System 7?

Under 7.5.3 with AppleShare Client 3.7.4 and OpenTransport, you get the "Server IP Address..." button. This button is not visible under earlier AppleShare clients (Workstation for versions prior to 3.7) or while using MacTCP (which can't run under ASC 3.7.4).

Mk.558, you are right that AppleShare Client and OpenTransport are required. On System 7.5.3/7.5.5, use OpenTransport 1.1.2 and AppleShare Client 3.7.4. Then with OT enabled instead of MacTCP, you can connect to the server address (currently 208.84.155.247, as I let the domain name expire). OT includes TCP capability.
