Warcraft II - Impossible to get working?

Hi again, I started asking about Warcraft II in the requests thread and didn't realise it'd take so long to figure out so I thought I'd start a thread dedicated to the topic.

Now ...

I can't seem to get Warcraft II running unless I'm using a computer that actually runs OS9 or earlier, with the CD in the drive. (Proud owner of Warcraft I and II, so I'm not trying to be a pirate! Hehe)

I've tried various ways of doing it, and tried a few updates of the game itself. Mounting Toast images outside of Basillisk, mounting them using the Basillisk GUI ...

Has anyone got a reliable way of making this work? Or is it fundamentally impossible because of the hybrid disc format (used for the CD-audio) ?

...says, "The original version of WarCraft II has an incompatibility with Mac OS X, where it can't find the game CD-ROM. You can join in a network game since up to three players can join using one CD-ROM, but you can't start a game. The only way to fix this is to upgrade to the newer Battle.net version of WarCraft II."

Obviously this incompatibility extends to Classic. Does anybody in here have the Battle.net edition so we can confirm if the problem is present only on the original version?

I have a Warcraft II ToD warez disc image, acquired in 2003 - probably after I bought Warcraft III and it ran too slow on a Mac that more than met the minimum requirements.

In the disc image there is a "Warcraft II 100% [k]" patcher application. I have no idea what it does.

I don't suppose I could borrow that file to see if it helps? I'm willing to accept the risk of damage to my computer!

Sure, post a disposable email address, the file is only 24K, 16K compressed.

The version of Warcraft II on the CD image is v1.22.

Ready to upload (Tides of Darkness edition). But is it abandonware ??

Nlizzard still supply updates, but it's no longer sold, and only the Battle.net edition runs under OSX.

It's a warez version, as previously said, acquired after I bought Warcraft 3 and it ran like a dog on a Mac with twice the grunt it had as minimum requirements. It's just under 20MB as a compressed Toast image.

The last update to the Battle.net edition was in 2002, so it's reasonable to assume there'll be no more and the game's abandonware.

OK, I thought Battle.net version was here already, but I got it Mac/PC Hybrid.
Its on the Mac Garden database now as separate game.
