WTB: WORKING Macintosh SE/30

I hope this is the right place -- it's a Macintosh-related request, right? lol

I want to buy a Macintosh SE/30.

I saw a PERFECT one on eBay for 99¢ [!!!] but some dude has a bidbot on it
that automatically ups whatever I offer by a buck -- yeccchhh ....

So can anyone here help me out?

I don't care so much about it's cosmetic condition.

All I do care about is that it is in 100% working order -- no herringbones, please!

Anyone interested please email me -- ipad...@gmail.com

Thanks! 8^ ]

The US may vary, but an SE/30 in perfect working order in the UK or NZ usually goes for about US$250 equivalent.
I have two, but they don't work - screen issues. You may get something similar for half of this, like a perfect Classic II for $150 equivalent.

Yep, the price of these have soared in recent years. Even dead ones are commanding a high price. I would like to get a Classic II, bertyboy, but getting one in working order is a waiting game. Some (very) hopeful dude is asking $399 for a Classic II on ebay (Australia) right now Tired

Thanks for commenting!

I already have a Macintosh Classic II.

Now it's time to take the next step ....

$250’s not too bad an asking price -- I'd pay it.

Anyone else, please?

Ah, I had a Classic II, bought from new, £700 Uk educational discount, but I let an ex walk away with it, and my StyleWriter 1200. Don't miss the printer, but I'd love to get my hands on an SE/30 or Classic II, or Colour Classic II. Or a ... the list goes on.

Bummer about the ex, on all levels. The list goes on for me too. ([Edit] Wishfully "thinking aloud" here) I'd like at least 3 of the beige towers from 8500 through to MT G3, A pizza box LCIII wouldn't go amiss & a new video board for my SE Superdrive which is now sitting on a cabinet looking gorgeous but neglected...

[Edit] I'd given the SE away and somehow it found its way back to me after a dozen or so years... it hadn't been looked after so well and the internals show water or damp conditions damage. When I got it home I got it going & it worked OK for about 24 hours and then "herring-boned". The video board looks the most damaged, but otherwise no leaky capacitors etc, and it still boots up OK & can be shut down safely by key combo without needing to see a display... I'm hoping that someone will be selling one of these or a closely related Mac with a dead mobo and I can scavenge some video parts... But with ebay sellers asking upwards of 50 - 100 bucks for a dead carcass, its off putting.

Wish I lived closer to themacmeisters local tip Wink

heh, I need a tip like that when I break so many Macs I find!

On a related note, new iMac G4 FP is best Mac I have ever owned. Shame it is such a bastard to take apart and replace ODD and HDD, I need to get me a few Torx screwdrivers, can anyone here point me in the right direction? (or is it Torq screwdrivers?)

Yeah, I have one of those FP iMacs, it's put me off upgrading the HDD and the 2nd RAM slot, and I have the Torq screwdrivers.

Stanley make the small sizes, so I grabbed a T7, T8 and T9 in the UK. For the larger sizes for compact Macs (T15), I got a few of those in a magnetic drilll-driver bit set (Bosch) and used them on my long handled magnetic screwdriver. It's a lot of money for the (long-nosed) T15 setup if you're not going to use the stuff for anything else. The Stanley T7-T9 were just a few pounds though. I got a selection of T7-T9 because I found the T8 worked better where the T7 was specified (on my PBG4).

Thanks Berty. I believe I need a T15 and a T10 to take apart the G4 iMac FP. from this guide -> http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/imac_g4/imacg4_takeapart.html

I have seen SE/30s in Europe go for €50. I got mine 2 years ago for less (In Europe). If you are prepared to pay double that in shipping, then set up an automated international search in eBay.
Why do you want an SE/30, aside from the cool factor? An SE is also a great compact mac and pds cards (ethernet etc) for it pop up every now and then. One can fit a 50-pin SCSI drive inside them too.
If you just want some System 6 goodness, a Mac IIcx with a monochrome monitor has more or less the same specs as an SE/30. I use a 1024x768 LCD monitor set to B&W and 512x368 on mine. IIcxs are much, much cheaper than SE/30s and it is NuBus cards are also easier to get and cheaper to buy than their SE/30 counterparts. The Mac IIci is much more expandable and more expensive.

Stnley still sell a T10 and T15 (both regular and FatMax) on their site, under US$5 each. I'm guessing a chinese knock-off brand will be about $1.
Can't find the T7, T8, T9 screwdrivers any more, but Stanley do a socket set, with T8, T10, T15 and 8 more for a few dollars more. Other national brands may have similar sets.

Thanks bertyboy, you are a great help. I may need these sooner than expected, because the RAM upgrade for the G5 iMac just arrived, and it appears the built-inside DIMM is only 128MB, not 256MB as originally thought. There is a good take apart vid on YouTube, which I have saved, showing just how to do the RAM replacement.

@iPadCaryMG: Might be worth making a WTB topic on the 68k Mac Liberation Forum too. (http://68kmla.org) People are always downsizing their collections and if they know someone looking for a Mac I'm sure you'll find couple of people willing to part with a working SE/30. Wink

Edit: Oh, and always keep an eye out on your local Craigslist, you never know when someone might post something there. Wink
