[From Wikipedia]
Riven is a puzzle adventure game, the sequel to Myst. Developed by Cyan Worlds, it was initially published by Brøderbund. Riven was distributed on five compact discs and released in 1997; it was later released on a single DVD-ROM, with improved audio and a fourteen-minute "making-of" video.
Riven was praised by professional reviewers, with the magazine Salon proclaiming that the game approaches the level of art. Critics positively noted the puzzles and immersive experience of the gameplay. The best-selling game of 1997, Riven sold 1.5 million copies in one year.
Like its predecessor Myst, Riven is a point-and-click adventure game played from a first-person perspective. The player explores immersive environments depicted through a large series of computer generated stills, using mouse clicks for movement or to manipulate objects within reach. By operating mechanical contraptions and deciphering codes and symbols discovered in the surroundings, the vaguely explained goal can eventually be reached.
To navigate the world, the player simply clicks in the direction they want to walk or turn. The cursor changes in appearance, depending on its position on the screen and what it is hovering over, to show what effect clicking will have. For instance, if the player positions the cursor hand near the side of the screen, it may show a pointing finger, indicating that clicking will turn the view in that direction. The cursor also changes in context to show when players can drag or toggle switches, or when certain items can be picked up and carried. Such items can then be examined at any time, and either reveal clues to puzzles or provide information on the game's setting and story. Like Myst, Riven has an optional method of navigation known as Zip Mode, which allows players to skip to areas already explored, but may cause them to miss important clues.
Riven has more complex and numerous puzzles than its forerunner, and is set in a larger virtual world for players to explore. Whereas in Myst the objective of the game is to travel to different Ages to solve puzzles before returning to a "hub Age", Riven's gameplay takes place on the five islands of the Age of Riven. Much of it consists of solving puzzles to access new areas of the islands, though players are also able to explore without fulfilling objectives. The volcanic landscape depicted, with its steep cliffs and crater lakes, is bestrewed with mechanical, Victorian looking artifacts such as elevators, pipes, levers and roller coaster-like transports. To solve the game, players must speculate on the purpose and physical principles of these artifacts, as well as their role in the fictional culture.

Thank you for this upload :]
Both partitions are archived
"You" being the uploader. I know I uploaded at least some of the CDs, if not all of them, to my file archive, except they weren't hybrid-uploaded (I archived them poorly).
Question remains: are both partitions archived?
@Temporary Joe:
Who is "you"? If you've logged in check the "Revisions" links on a page to see who has done what.
You did archive both partitions, right? My uploads of Riven only had the Mac side...
@ MikeTomTom
Thanks!!
Yes, mine did.
Just out the back of my head, without digging up my copy; 'Riven' CD-version came on Hybrid disks?
@JSamm:
I guess you're asking me this. What I did 1st was install Riven with the installer on the 1st cd. Next I moved the contents of whatever was not included in the install from the remaining cds into the folder Riven was installed to. Primarily this was into the "Data" folder in the installed Riven folder.
If you've done this, edit riven.cfg, you can copy and paste in the following:
; Volume name to disc number mapping 1
[Disc1]
Name = Riven1
[Disc2]
Name = Riven2
[Disc3]
Name = Riven3
[Disc4]
Name = Riven4
[Disc5]
Name = Riven5
; Volume name to disc number mapping 2
[Riven1]
Disc = 1
[Riven2]
Disc = 2
[Riven3]
Disc = 3
[Riven4]
Disc = 4
[Riven5]
Disc = 5
; Data file sets

Disc = 0
File_0 = "data/a_data.mhk"
File_1 = "data/a_sounds.mhk"
[ospit]

File_1 = "data/o_sounds.mhk"

File_1 = "data/r_sounds.mhk"

File_0 = "data/t_data.mhk"
File_1 = "data/t_sounds.mhk"

[bspit]
Disc = 1
File_0 = "data/b_data.mhk"
File_1 = "data/b_sounds.mhk"
File_2 = "data/b_data1.mhk"
Once I did that Riven stopped asking me to insert cds when I was playing.
Would you mind posting the edited riven.cfg file? I opened mine and all it said was "[TOC] disc=1", and I'm not sure where to put the new path.
Thanks for any help, or the file!

Don't suppose now is a good time to bring up the subject of walkthroughs and hints books and guides. Do we think it has a place here ? And if so, what format should they take ? the original walkthroughs or huides come in all different formats, a series of HTML pages (some with graphics), a PDF, a HyperCard stack, plain text documents, RTFs, etc.
Thanks bertyboy. I was actually searching for an update for Riven but all I could find were "Exile" updates.
Added updater to list of downloads. A Stuffit v5.5 archive of the updater application.
bertyboy, since this version of Riven came out in 1997, which is the year of it's original release, it looks like the patch would be a good upload here to supplement. If the date of the patch is later than Sept. '97 I'd say upload it please. Thanks!
There's a v1.0.1 patch, which I can upload if this version is not already at that version. I bought mine the day it came out, so I needed it.
WhooHoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for uploading
.
I LOVE THIS GAME
Yes, it looks fine. The dates are untouched. I posted this to show that these are original, clean copies.
@Vitoarc:
That looks ok, what's wrong?
All HFS CDs will have a Desktop DB and DF.
Just a short inbetween on the subject; if on OSX, don´t forget to check out RivenX: http://www.devklog.net/rivenx/
There´s also support in the dev versions of ScummVM for Riven.
Yes, MikeTomTom, I'm doing what I enjoy. Mac stuff. Doesn't matter if it's OSX or Classic, I love my Macs.
I also feel like I needed to give something back to the Garden for what it has provided to me. Without this place I doubt whether I'd be using my old Mac, better than when it was new, and once again enjoying great games like F/A-18, A-10 Attack, and Apache Longbow.
Thanks for the tips on Riven. I can always count on you to add something really interesting to any upload.
You have been busy
Thankfully, I already have this - phew - as my bandwidth is expensive (living out here in the sticks).
Its a great game.
A tip for playing the CD version if you have the disk space: Install the game as instructed, then copy the entire contents from inside the "Data" folder located in each CD over into the "Data" folder inside the installed "Riven" folder on your hard drive. Edit the file "riven.cfg" located in the "Riven" folder using BBEdit to reflect the new location of the data files. Once thats done you can play the entire game without being asked to swap CDs during play.
I can post my modified "riven.cfg" here if anyone would like to try playing this game without the CD swapping but is unsure of how to edit the "riven.cfg" with confidence.
I've got all the CD's ready to upload. It's just a matter of uploading them over the next few days.
