Enter the castle and reach Warlock Lord's chamber before he can open the Gates of Hell and summon the Behemoth. Don't forget to carry a lit torch all the time.
Update: Archive now also contains a walkthrough and printable diploma.
This is the third game in the MacVenture series. See also Déjà Vu, Déjà Vu II and Uninvited.
Also available for Amiga, Apple IIGS, Atari ST, DOS, NES and Windows.
CompatibilitySame as previous version, but with 32-bit addressing enabled. It works under Mac OS 6, 7 and up. No need for B/W capable machine, but runs well with. Should even work under OS 9, if something can be done about the sound in the game.
The sound file hangs game on newer OSes or the emulators cut out the sound (ie Basilisk under OSX). If someone fixes the sound issue, this classic could run under OS 9.2.2.
Comments
Right decision, as Snowie and newer OS X version also destroy the resource fork.
It's HFS. Have been transferring lots of other games in the same method and they work fine. This game, however, has the aforementioned issue. Haven't seen an error like that before. And I really want to play Shadowgate!
UPDATE: Got it working. Decided to try unstuffing the .sit on my SE/30 directly, as opposed to on my Macbook Pro, and that did the trick! Brings me back, that's for sure!
Sixers105, how is the ZIP medium formatted? Hopefully HFS, not PC. If PC, the resource fork used by classic Mac OS versions would be removed and the files get unuseable on the Mac.
I'm having trouble getting this game to run on my SE/30. It's my understanding that this is the version that will run in Mac OS 7 with 32-bit addressing, etc., but when I save the program to the hard drive and open it up, it says the file does not exist. Never seen that time of error before. I unstuffed the SIT file on my Macbook Pro with StuffIt Expander Version 15 and then copied the files over to the SE/30 using a ZIP drive. Getting the error when clicking on the Shadowgate program. Any ideas?? Thanks in advance!
Edit: Sorry, due to external robots changed 'xxx 7' to 'Mac OS 7' - IIGS User
This is the SECOND Mac game I ever played (after Mouse Stampede).
AWESOMESAUCE!!!
For anyone that is trying to open this up, you need to use at least StuffIt Expander 5.5 with Dropstuff/Expander Enhancer 5.5 or StuffIt Deluxe 5.5 , otherwise it won't unstuff correctly.
@trope: try this older version on MinivMac http://macintoshgarden.org/games/shadowgate-old
The version on this page is 32-bit and is at least start-able up to OS 9. The SIT-archive might be too new for Expander 4.
yes! i've got stuffit 4.0.1 installed but it doesn't recognize the shadowgate .sit file, and I can't drag that .sit file onto the stuffit icon. I've also tried expanding the shadowgate .sit file outside of mini vmac and putting it on a drive--this part worked, but the game still can't be played.
Yes, that's true, in recent Toast versions (for example), you need to activate 'older options', then mark something like 'Use HFS Standard format'.
This can also be seen on images of CD-ROMs where the files and documents have been copied rather than the complete volume (or device) including the file structure. I've corrected a few of such images myself, from HFS+ back to HFS.
Nice comments about the HFS and HFS+ file formats, I should remember that before, since I'm using Macs since Mac OS version 7...
Got it running!
Thanks everyone for your comments, just copying the (already expanded) files onto a HFS drive did the trick.
The error code *might* be generated when trying to run an old game, assuming HFS-format, on a HFS+ formatted disk or if Shadowgate is run from the sharing folder instead of 'inside' SheepShaver.
If not already done; try to expand the SIT-archive from a SheepShaver-volume rather than the shared one, use an older StuffIt Expander; ie v.5.5 or 4 from this place.
HTH! It´s a fantastic game!
System Errors 7.0.1 told me, -51 means "rfNumErr, Reference number invalid", filed under "File System Errors", but I don't understand this, it's like chinese for me.
"File System Error" probably means, the game does not understand some part(s ) of the Mac OS version used.
I am so excited I found Shadowgate here!
However, when I start Shadowgate, it throws an Error:
"Oh, No! ErrorCode = -51.
Error while reading data file Shadow Object."
After that, the whole system crashes (i.e. SheepShaver just quits).
I expanded with Stuffit Expander 13.x. Running SheepShaver, and I tried both these settings:
Old World ROM with MacOS 7.6.1 and New World ROM with MacOS 9.
The file Shadow Object exists and is readable.
Has anyone run into this before and can give some advice?
Haha, you're going to make Java programmers pretty angry
! But I agree, current version of the preference editor is really hawful (there's not that much of GUI once in the actual application if I recall properly).
Even if I don't care about the GUI (I edit the preference file by hand in a plain text editor) I may well try to build a pretty (and Java, just for sake of the joke) preference editor if its current look is the only thing preventing you to use up to date versions... from my point of view, the version you use really lacks on-the-fly resolution change.
whatever the current version is written in, it has the look and feel of those awful java / xml based software apps supplied by the big corporations to accompany their products, ie. Canon, Oracle.
No such thing as "Java Basilisk II" exists.
My mistake. I found vMac, and pre-Java Basilisk Ii much more usable. It's not like the Mac Plus I'm emulating has changed in the years it's not been developed.
Those are two different applications made by two different authors. To quote Mini vMac's author :
Basilisk II is still plain old C (and assembly for some parts, when applicable). I think what made you wrong here is that the preference utility is now programmed using gtk, which gives it more of a linux look than a Windows one.
That sounds like a good idea, bertyboy. The respective last versions for OS 9 would be a real benefit for those with real hardware.
Honestly, if you can run OS9.2.2 on your Mac, you can run vMac or mini vMac, and play it under that.
Perhaps we should also be hosting older versons of vMac here, ie. I still use v0.1.9c (while it was still called "vMac", not "mini vMac". Same for Basilisk II, still run "v1.6 classic" from before it was re-done in Java.
Try in Classic Mode under OS X or under OS 9.0.4 or earlier directly, before the changed memory management. This goes for the latest version of Shadowgate; v 1.5. You ought to get as far as when the gate opens in first scene. The door 'gneak' sound, or when it's supposed to sound locks the game up. It seems the Sound Manager can´t handle the old sound format used in the game. Whith this fixed I guess it should be possible to run the game under OS 9/Classic.
Doesn't work for me under OS 9.2.2 on a PowerMac G4. Immediately after starting it crashes with an error type 2. Tried setting back the screen to 256 colors / gray but no difference.
Anyone have the original disks for this? DiskCopy 4.2 images would be nice
Is anyone else having trouble unpacking this with StuffIt Expander 4.0.1?
