Spelunx and the Caves of Mr. Seudo was an educational computer game developed by Cyan in 1991. It was designed by the brothers Robyn and Rand Miller (now better known as the creators of Myst). The game was programmed and implemented using HyperCard, with Robyn Miller hand-drawing all of the in-game graphics and scenery. The game's title is derived from the verb "to spelunk", referring to the act of exploring caves.
Although Spelunx contained a basic frame story (centered on the scientific endeavors of one Professor Spelunx and his willing assistant, Mr. Seudo), there existed no other plot. As a game, it was intended to be explored and played with like a toy rather than completed or won (as in the traditional sense of a "game"). Although Professor Spelunx and Mr. Seudo are mentioned in-game, even being depicted in some locations, the player never meets them.
The game was structured as a set of rooms, connected by a series of underground tunnels. Each room contained a variety of mini-games and experiments, some of which were designed to introduce the player to a specific field of knowledge. A hidden panel within the game allowed for the rearrangement of the caves and other locations, and even allowed for the expansion of the caves with the addition of newer rooms. Although it was the intention of Cyan to continue releasing new rooms over time for players to explore, this never occurred.
In 1993, following the release of Myst, Cyan produced a new color version of Spelunx. The original monochrome version contained only snippets of color at certain locations or during specific events. This new version (colorized by Josh Staub) contained full color scenery and animation, as well as an easter egg of Myst Island hidden within one of the rooms.

Look at who's playing Spelunx. Related to Woz?
Thanks, descriptions are the stuff what this site still needs.
I always preferred this version over the full-color one. The splashes of color in the otherwise monochrome environment were very well done and added to the sense of exploration and discovery, making it all that much more vivid. Besides eliminating that aspect of the game, I just don't really care for the color pallette they chose for the scenery in the re-release.
I've just updated the description for this and the color version. It was originally copied from Wikipedia it seems and was somewhat inadequate, imo.
They were for me too. I remember the lightbulbs in the tunnels were yellow...
I could have sworn that there were parts of this in color for those with color monitors, even when the rest was in B&W... the warp rooms, and the lightning simulator come to mind.
