The 7th Guest is a Full-Motion-Video horror adventure game which was one of the first computer games to be released only on CD-ROM. Together with Myst it accelerated sales of CD-ROM drives and was known for its video clips incorporated into pre-rendered 3D graphics. Over two million copies were sold worldwide.

This is a 1st person, single button point and click game with a 'smart' cursor: it changes to a skeletal hand for movement, a drama mask for ghostly videos, chattering teeth for supernatural events, and a throbbing brain and eyeball for puzzles. You gradually explore the 22 rooms of the mansion and as you solve the puzzle located in each room, other rooms open up and more of the story is revealed.

This game was far ahead of its time, not only in format, presentation and gameplay, but also in graphics and sound. The high resolution graphics and full motion video for smooth transitions between locations are really astounding when compared to other games which were produced at the same time.

The haunted house is beautifully rendered and highly detailed, atmospheric and eerie, and even many of the puzzle pieces are creepy. And the original soundtrack by George Alistair Sanger, 'The Fat Man' (which can be played independently from the 2nd CD), adds even more to the spooky feeling (turn on your speakers and refresh to hear some now).

Old man Stauf built a house
And filled it with his toys
Six guests were invited one night
Their screams the only noise

No one knows what happened next
There's no one left to say
But if you should see Old Man Stauf
Get on your knees and pray

NB: PowerPC-compatibility with the Patch included with the download.

Since I restored this on 21st September here have been 1237 dowloads. Surely this is some sort of record for the number of downloads in only about 6 weeks. I can only imagine how many DLs there have been since the page was first made.

EDIT: Just passed 3000 downloads (2nd December)

Made a new working link. There is also a soundtrack CD that I might upload eventually.

I bought this one cheap off ebay in 2002 and at first I was really suprised about the well-done story. Also liked the scary (but no gory!) theme of this graphic-adventure. Unfortunately my ethusiasm faded in the later parts of the game, when it gets frustrating because of the hard puzzles. Never beat it, never got past the labyrinth, always got lost in there. If you prefer Myst-like games, this one may be worth a try anyway.
