QuarkXpress had been the industry standard for desktop publishing for 10 years by the time version 4 was released. QuarkXpress version 4 brought into the program, interface improvements such as pop-up tools, tabbed dialog boxes and for the 1st time Bézier curve drawing tools, allowing the user to set type along an irregular path, or create clipping paths to make any image into a cut-out directly in QuarkXpress. The version 4.1 upgrade added support for PDF and XML.

QXP 4.0 can install as either FAT or native to PPC or 68k Macintosh
An issue (perhaps), on SheepShaver installs (QXP 4.11 only). Simply opening a document invokes a "Save Changes" dialog upon Quitting QXP 4.11 or closing the document, even when no changes have taken place. Any ideas why, or how to fix?
Comments
@themacmeister:
Thanks for posting up the JIT port of BII, I can use this to run QXP 4, when I need to now. I'll be still be using Lauri's port for most other Mac 68k apps tho'
Sharing drives/files between the two is no problem.
You may get ethernet of sorts via SLIRP... but can you set a permanent IP address or run a NAT router from the JIT BII?
The startup sound has also been in Lauri's Win port since 2000...
This is where a permanent IP address, full TCP/IP compatibility and networked postscript printers likely come to the fore - I get networked PS printers available to Basilisk II, from Mac OS's 7.1 through 8.1 at startup. To use QXP 4 and access these from that JIT BII port, I need to save any output to .ps, then boot Lauri's Win port of BII (or copy the .ps to Windows) to do the printing, using either Lauri's port of BII or the host PC, it doesn't matter once I have the .ps file, as Windows, Mac & Linux boxes and Lauri's emulated BII Mac all access the same printers, here.
Have you tried the PPC install of QXP 4 on SheepShaver as yet? This is another one I have had not much luck with. - My SheepShaver on Windows would be the same as what you'd be using here.
You really are unlucky Mike
Zapping the PRAM in the GUI is so easy!
Had it working last night launching with GUI - with fullscreen, millions of colours, ethernet, CD-ROM -- the works, using two versions of SDL Basilisk under XP. See link and screenshot at bottom of post. I used the basilisk that has startup sounds -> 30/8/2010
I installed ATM Deluxe 4.0 with no issues off CD-ROM (real CD), and Type 1 font display is awesome - TrueType is same as usual -- I will need to get that SmoothType control panel to help antialias those suckers.
According to QXP4, I am using a US English version of MacOS 8.0, but I have and used a retail AUS install disk - so go figure (I do not think 8.0 is localised for Australia). 8.1 update might be, but not original install.
Get Basilisk II with startupsound from here -> http://www.emaculation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5282
Follow instructions exactly, using their links for SDL and GTK+ runtimes here -> http://www.emaculation.com/doku.php/basilisk_ii_setup
See results here -> http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/1900/capture16012011021018.png
PS. I have no printer driver or Quark POCE/Colour in the System Folder (no printer available). Even if I dump the prefs, QXP4 does nothing on startup (except recreating prefs). On my real hardware, it recreates precision separation tables, and recreates a list of printer descriptions...hmm.
@themacmeister: Well, have we come "a ways" yet?
No need to send you my BII prefs tho'... After my initial setting up and reporting that this BII doesn't work for me... it does work, but I had initially set it up to run full screen (what I prefer with my usual BII) - this JIT Windows port of BII does not appear to run in a full screen. Once I changed my settings back to Windowed, not a problem.
Thanks for putting your copy of BII up for me. However, it mostly reminded me of the reasons of just why I don't use this port on Windows.
A brief Basilisk II Windows port history here: Originally a brilliant programmer named "Christian Bauer" produced a Macintosh 68k emulation for UNIX named Basilisk II, this was later ported to other OS's such as BeOS, Amiga, Mac OS X and Windows. The Windows ports split into two groups, there was the "Gwenolé Beauchesne" JIT port - which you posted up and are currently using (its the common port) and the "Lauri Pesonen" Assembly coded port, which IMO is the better of the two, but is the less well known.
For example, with that port you are currently using you get to choose between variations of a Mac IIci and a Mac 900...
With Lauri's port, you can have:
ID: Model Name:
5 (Mac IIci)
7 (Mac IIfx)
14 (Mac Quadra 900)
16 (Mac Quadra 700)
20 (Mac Quadra 950)
21 (Mac LC III)
24 (Mac Centris 650)
29 (Mac Quadra 800)
30 (Mac Quadra 650)
31 (Mac LC II)
38 (Mac IIvi)
39 (Mac Performa 600)
42 (Mac IIvx)
43 (Mac Color Classic)
46 (Mac Centris 610)
47 (Mac Quadra 610)
50 (Mac LC 520)
56 (LCIII+, Performa 460-467)
74 (Mac LC/Performa 550,560)
77 (Mac Color Classic II, Performa 275)
80 (Mac LC/Performa 475-476/20)
81 (Mac LC/Performa 575-578/20)
83 (Mac LC/Performa 475-476)
84 (Mac LC/Performa 475-476/33)
85 (Mac LC/Performa 575-578/25)
86 (Mac LC/Performa 575-578)
87 (Mac Quadra 605/20)
88 (Mac Quadra 605)
89 (Mac Quadra 605/33)
And run your emulation as such a machine using the correct ROM for that model if you wish. My preferred ROM is a Quadra 800 ROM and I run BII as that particular Mac.
You can also load a 68k Mac ROM and it will inform you of its probable name and model of the Mac, it will also determine if that the ROM checksum is bone fide. For example (Lauri's BII port informs me), the ROM file you posted with your BII has a ROM checksum FF7439EE and is likely from a Quadra 605 or an LC/Performa 475/575 and it is of a 32bit clean Mac II ROM type (not a dirty ROM).
Lauri's port can also can read and write to physical SCSI hardware devices (the PC host requires a SCSI card for this) up to 7 ports - SCSI 0 thru' SCSI 6. It read/writes to hardware devices such as obsolete MO & Zip drives and to permanently attached SCSI devices such CD burners, scanners and HDs...
Connected SCSI drives (even old Mac SCSI drives rescued from ancient kit) you can mount directly in Basilisk II and not have them mounted in the host Windows OS.
But the clincher for me, is Lauri's BII Ethernet support: It talks native TCP/IP and supports full (permanent), static IP addresses - This I absolutely require above all. That is, Basilisk II just becomes another Mac on our network here (where all connected machines on the network have permanent defined IP addresses) and sharing of networked printers also a must.
The JIT port's SLIRP is not up to the task. Its the networking of the JIT port that is its weakest point and I think it is the primary source of its crashing all of the time. Not only for the Basilisk II port, but also for SheepShaver, which borrows heavily from the JIT port of BII.
I also run the JIT port of SheepShaver because I don't have a choice. - I have networking turned off on this because it is so unreliable otherwise. But at least it can share common .hfv drives between itself and BII.
However and back to the subject at hand, QXP 4 and BII.
Catch 22:
The JIT BII doesn't appear to support full screen display in Windows OS yet QXP 4 displays text normally.
While Lauri's BII port supports a full screen display, but QXP 4 is having no bar of displaying or printing text in documents.
I can count on one hand the number of programs that don't like working on Lauri's BII Windows port, and QXP 4.x is numero uno! - actually I can't recall the name of the last prog that I've had trouble with on this BII (and I have loaded 100's of progs onto it over the last few years)...
I've worked out that I can toggle the QXP 4 display full screen OK on Lauri's BII, but text display or printing its documents are still a no go.
QXP 3.32x 68k & PPC works 100% without issue tho'
I am doing the ultimate test tonight on machine rebuilt SPECIFICALLY to test QXP 4.0 in fullscreen under Basilisk II, under OS 8.0 with Suitcase 3.0 and ~ATM control panel 4.02 (or just ATM Deluxe 4.
thanks to 24bit.
Now I am reverting to WinXP 32bit, on AMD AthlonXP, I should have no further issues with BasiliskII_GUI, and will therefore be able to run fullscreen. Having the font management should give me nice Type 1 font smoothing (as ATM does not work on antialiasing TrueType fonts
)
Anyway, I will have a definitive answer, and may well use FRAPS to make a short 'proof' video, if anyone doubts my voracity...
hehe
Could you email me your BasiliskPrefs file pls, as I cannot get fullscreen working under DirectX or otherwise. I would be very keen to see the switch used in prefs. I may also need your PRAM file, but I will leave that for the time being.
PS. Quark 4.0 still working SUPERBLY in 15/16 bit in windowed mode -- have tried nearly every feature of the program, and they all work as expected - rock solid stability (I have slight Desktop colour corruption, which should be solved by switching to 15bit).
"Specifies the Macintosh model ID that Basilisk II should report to MacOS.
The default is "5" which corresponds to a Mac IIci. If you want to run
MacOS 8, you have to set this to "14" (Quadra 900). Other values are not
officially supported and may result in crashes. MacOS versions earlier
than 7.5 may only run with the Model ID set to "5"."
Check your settings == may result in crashes is frightening!
See here for some preference options and explanations...
http://basilisk.cebix.net/README
I'm almost sure you will need to dump the PRAM file before starting, and after any major crash of BasiliskII.
You will need to manually edit the Basilisk prefs file (that's what I did), and only change all the paths to match yours -- try not to have any spaces in path names (ie: I put it in C:\BasiliskII\...).
Also switch back to windowed 1024x768 (even if just temporarily), change to thousands of colours, and give it a try. I will look up the pref file options again, and try it fullscreen.
PS. I have tested multiple text frames, filled with text of different fonts, sizes and styles and colours - everything works perfectly. I will go as far as to say that everything works PERFECTLY except the xtension Font Maker, which is for Multiple Master fonts, probably not available under OS 8.0.
Once it is running perfectly in windowed mode, you can back up your prefs and PRAM files, and then experiment some more.
PPS. I had QXP4 set up to use Minimum 32MB RAM, Maximum 64MB, and Basilisk still crashed repeatedly under Millions of colours. QXP4 is still perfectly usable under Thousands of colours, so it might be worth investigating that.
Best of luck.
PPPS. The Basilisk_GUI will not work for me under Win7_x64
PPPPS. Use my original prefs as a starting point when manually editing with a text editor.
@themacmeister: Nope, definitely not the unluckiest person in the world
You screenshot is windowed. I don't run Basilisk windowed, I run my emulator at full screen to try and mimic an actual Mac desktop as much as possible. And thats on a 1600 x 1200 display at millions of colours. Also in your screenshot, I couldn't detect the presence of editable text, there appeared to be graphic bitmapped text as part of an illustration but I wasn't sure if there were editable text fields in there. I could be wrong of cause.
Anyway, I don't get text displaying at all. Since I moved my 68k install to SheepShaver, it works perfectly there, text displays normally and the "Fit to Window" toggle also works 100% as does the rest of the program. If you have a largish display, can you try running your BII with a full screen display and try toggling the "Fit to Window" menu command?
I tried to run the BII you put up, it fails to launch so far, that is, the GUI runs fine and I can set up all of the required parameters OK, but Basilisk II fails to launch. I'll take another look at it later when I have a bit more time to do so.
MikeTomTom, you must be the unluckiest person in the world!
I copied my pristine, just installed QXP4 68k folder into basilisk (.sit.hqx), decompressed it, ran it (on a pristine localised MacOS 8.0 install), and it worked perfectly on both thousands and millions of colours. BasiliskII was very flakey indeed in millions of colours, but it was rock solid on thousands. See the following screenshot in Millions of colours. The text was fine, even on re-opening.
Here is my BasiliskII folder (minus HFV files), notice that it is an SDL build. Includes my prefs file that will need editing in a text editor.
http://rapidshare.com/files/442484305/BasiliskII.zip
Best of luck, I have my working quark 4 folder ready for you if you need it. Also, Quark did not rebuild prefs or printer descriptions on startup (weird?).
I went through hours of hell last night, trying to get an old Daewoo (yup, the car manufacturer) computer running XP SP3 so I could then use CD to get stuffit into Basilisk.
Everything failed epicly. USB keyboard would not work (no drivers under SP2) - updated to SP3 and then the computer was fried (C:\Windows\inf\biosinfo.inf missing), F*CK!
I will do a complete wipe and reinstall what I need tonight. Thanks for heads-up on stuffit 5.5 -- you are a legend.
Thanks for the .hfv files. they have saved me, but I really wanted to try MY INTALL, which is perfect, and now I have stuffit, all is good.
more news soon...
@themacmeister:
Look at the recent thread "Native stuffit 5.5 needed for powerbook 520c", there is a direct link to Stuffit 5.5 in an .hfv format and zipped, made esp. for Windows users - its here at the Garden,
(link is in the 1st comment made by 24bit)
I put it up here yonks ago
Here's my 68k install for QXP4. You don't need to delete the Prefs, it rebuilds and writes over them if you move it to another directory or run it on another system (from Basilisk then to SheepShaver or vice versa). It will also ask where to create an "Auxiliary Profiles Folder" each time you move platforms or start up for the first time. I just choose the QXP 4 folder and it is happy with that.
The QXP zip DL when you get it, is a zipped .hfv file also, so once unzipped you can mount it directly as a drive in either Basilisk II or SheepShaver and then run QXP immediately.
Sad (for me) to hear those drivers are no longer working in 64bit Win 7

Never mind, I discovered the original link to you was still working -- did a PERFECT install on G3 (first time!), I have copied the folder, but need to get working mac installers to Basillisk II without CD, it is impossible. If you could give me a stuffit installer (5.5?) in a small .HFV disk container, I will mount that and get stuffit installed in Basilisk II, the rest is easy! (I have the folder as .hqx stuffit file ready).
Cheers...
PS. Anyone can supply this, doesn't need to come from MikeTomTom only
PPS. 64-bit Windows compatibility
Both the cdenable.sys driver and the basilisk ethernet driver will not work in 64-bit Windows versions. Therefore you can't access cd-roms and can't make appletalk work on these windows versions. You can, however, make .iso images of your cd roms and add them to the volumes list in the BasiliskII GUI. For use internet access us can use the “slirp” option. You can place the cdenable.sys driver in the \Windows\SysWOW64\drivers folder to get rid of the (faulty) error reported about not being able to find the driver in the \windows\system32\drivers folder. The currently available experimental 64-bit GTK package has not been tested with BasiliskII.
@themacmeister: Yes I can do this for you, check back in a few hours if you're about, I'm tied up with cooking and downing a tinnie or two
Good luck with your install. I hadn't realised you were running Windows for this. I should send you my Basilisk II pre-configured. Its not the "Gwenolé Beauchesne" JIT ports, I use a now unsupported "Lauri Pesonen" B2 port for Windows, but IMHO, I find it blows the JIT ports out of the water. Would you care for a Mac OS 8.1 install to go with it? Ulteria motive here; I'm still running 32bit XP and I'm really curious to find out if Lauri's port still works on the latest Win OS's.
Hey Mike, could you possibly stuff, and upload your WORKING basillisk Qyark XPress 4.0 68k folder? I am not in a position to do a successful 68k install here - you can send me the link via reply or email - there should be a button here somewhere...
Sorry for my tardiness in checking this out. I have lost Basilisk II_GUI, so I took a long time getting BasiliskII working again. It now works, and I have space to install/test XPress 4.0. I am currently running System 8.0, hope that is well supported by Q4!
I am also getting latest beta vMac up and running for comparison purposes.
All this running under Win7 64bit - wish me luck!
EDIT: I have the full startup disk and rom collection, System 1.0 to 7.53, for Mini vMac. This should include a working Mac II colour version of Rom/Startup disk. Possibly only 256 colours, but it is a start. Basillisk II still my primary concern tho...
EDIT: My Basilisk II settings -- no CD, Quadra 800, 68040 with FPU enabled (there is a good online reference of a complete Basilisk Preferences file somewhere). I believe all my JIT error reporting is turned off (for non-fatal errors). My Basilisk II launching from executable only works every 2nd launch, need to force quit the second launch ?!
If it actually works for me, I will post my actual BII Prefs, it will need editing for correct paths (and adding CD support under Win 98 - XP)!
Also, is there any chance of the SheepShaver OS install being copied back to BasiliskII disk, and still working? If it was a Universal Install it will work!
Just another thought... sigh...
Now you have a rebuilt Printer Descriptions, and Preferences file, will copying it back be worth the effort?
When I was having issues with XTensions, I had to remove temp file, and prefs between attempts. Also, is Control-0 mapped to something via BasiliskII?
Time to try the MMU or JIT options in BII, as there are options to ignore major JIT errors (which may be happening when you press Control-0 for instance).
Great to hear you have had limited success!!!
I am going to try tonight with both BII and some custom MiniVMac builds. I know I won't get millions of colours with vMac, but it is worth a try!
EDIT: What OS are you using in BasiliskII? 9.04?
@themacmeister:
I've had a major QXP4 breakthrough on SheepShaver. I copied over my 68k install from Basilisk II and it works 100% OK there. - So for me, the PPC version doesn't work on SheepShaver but the 68k version purrs along like a happy cat. Now if only I could get it to work so well on B2
@themacmeister:
The QXP4 IE Standard install, installed beautifully onto my 660AV Mac, on Basilisk II and SheepShaver (running on Intel hardware). Not a hitch anywhere. My upgrade to 4.1 failed initially only because I didn't turn off my System extensions 1st - the ReadMe says to, I ignored this to my peril. Turning off System extensions and running the updater a 2nd time went 100% OK. Ditto for the upgrade to 4.11. There were no incomplete installs from 4.0 through 4.11.
QXP 4.x runs "kind of" on Basilisk II, with the symptoms I described earlier. These same symptoms persist through all of the updates and on various Mac OS's and on B2 installed on different machines.
QXP 4.x does not run on any of my SheepShaver installs to date (although it installs OK)
QXP 3.x (both PPC and 68k) run perfectly on both emulators with no exhibited anomalies and no gotchas.
QXP 5.x (PPC only) runs just as perfectly on SheepShaver.
There is something "funky" about QXP 4.x and emulators, it seems to work properly on actual hardware, so far. Perhaps QXP 4.x requires a MMU and 3.x & 5.x are less fussy.
I hope you fare better on your B2 install.
Mike, did your install actually finish? I remember all my 68k installs failing on PPC hardware (right at the end, where it expands/joins files). This could be a reason why the installs refuse to work. You may also want to look into disabling/enabling the maths coprocessor, or switching from '040 to '030? You could also try SoftFPU or similar.
Just some ideas that I hope will help you out.
I will try installing it on my copy of Basilisk II on my new Core i3 tonight -- should make for a fun time...
Yep. I'm confident that QXP 4 will run on actual Mac PPC harware too. It has no problem on actual 68k hardware either.
For my personal needs. I simply do not need this to be running on a Mac PPC 0r PPC emulator. - QXP 5.x runs great there, I really have no need for QXP4.x on a PPC emulator.
I would have rather liked it to be running on a Mac 68k emulator tho' as it was the last version of QXP that could run on the 68k platform and it does have cool features not available to 3.x... My actual 68k hardware supports a display of up to a very limited 832 x 624 pixels at 32k colours
Whereas my Basilisk II runs a nice 1600 x 1200 pixel display at native millions of colours. Perfect for QXP but sad, sad, sad for me...
QXP 4 does run on Basilisk II... almost. It installs and runs but there a major problems. For example (on Basilisk II):
QXP 4.0: Launches app, I choose create new document, create text frame, write some text in any font; Save doc. Re-open doc and no text is visible. Print the doc as-is and no text is visible in printed doc.
Re-open file again, click into text frame, type a character and the missing text reappears out of thin air!
Now imagine you have a 300 page QXP doc here and nnn's of text frames to do this to.
The most difficult problem I've struck so far tho' is with the menu option "View > Fit To Window". Choose this and QXP locks up and goes into an endless loop taking up 100% of the host computers CPU time. The only option here is crash the emu altogether.
QXP 4.1: ditto, exactly the same as above, no change.
QXP 4.11: ditto, exactly the same as above, no change.
Out of all this to date. My findings tell me that QXP4.x is not compatible with SheepShaver, outright. It does work to some degree on Basilisk II, but AFA 68k emulation goes, QXP3.x is by far the better choice - so much more reliable and does everything I ask of it.
I'm thinking that if I want to get QXP4 working to how I'd like it to be working I'd better be hanging out in eBay 24/7 waiting for that odd Quadra 800 to come up for sale
Mike, I can confirm that 4.0 FAT and 4.11 PPC will run under 9.2.2 on real G3 hardware, with some quark xtensions disabled (I have done this myself). Unfortunately, this proves nothing on the 68k side, where things are a little murky, but does offer hope - I can check which xtensions are 68k/FAT, and let you know.
I don't have any 68k machine for testing, but you might try SoftMac XP or Fusion 3.0 on Windows. It runs sweetly (when it does run).
http://emulators.com/softmac.htm
Check it out.
@themacmeister: I knew what you had meant
I also mentioned, QXP 5.x has no problem running in SheepShaver (with all of its XTensions enabled) running on the same OS, same fonts, etc etc...
I won't be pursuing it further on SheepShaver. But I will be trying my best to get 4.x to work on Basilisk, where I really would like it to work.
Perhaps someone else will try version 4 out and get some positive results with it and the emulators. I hope so (and hopefully they'll share their "how to's").
Sorry Mike, I meant Quark XTensions, not System Extensions...
I think you knew that, just clarifying!
Cheers.
@themacmeister:
Yes, and I think that I've tried just about every trick in the book to get this to work (perhaps someone else is having better luck than me on SheepShaver & Basilisk II, running QXP 4). It gets to the splashscreen and no further for me.
I won't be running this on SheepShaver in the long term, I'm just testing it out to see if it works... I run QXP 5 on SheepShaver and 5 has no problem running on it, full Xtensions included
But I would like to get it working on Basilisk II, so I'll persevere a bit longer on that angle and try to get it going on B2... The SheepShaver tho', isn't looking too promising.
@Protocol 7: Thanks for this one too, as yet to apply the updater patch but will do so shortly.
[Edit] Yes, this works 100% on updating QXP4.1 IE to QXP4.11 and is running just fine on my 68k Centris 660AV
Now, if only I could say the same for Basilisk II (where I really want this to be working).
Thank you for the IE updaters and thanks very much to themacmeister for the original QXP 4.0 uploads and utilities.
P7, you are a legend!
Here's the 4.11 updaters for XPress (International English) and Passport. Went googling around and found download links buried away on the Quark forums
http://www.multiupload.com/19O03EG7PM
MikeTomTom, that is very sad to hear - I have the IE 4.11 updater (Isn't it included in the archive??). I will search my backups.
Have you tried disabling ALL xtensions?! It was actually crashing badly on real G3 hardware, until I disabled *many* incompatible XTensions. You can safely disable Index, and anything that looks unnecessary.
Also, after a crash, dump the temp file, and the Quark XPress Preferences file - it will get rebuilt next start.
I don't want you to have to install too much, but could you install Suitcase 8/9 as well?
This is how I used XPress for many years. Also, antialised fonts require Thousands/Millions of colours.
PS. 3.32 has more "compatible" xtensions, so may be a better fit in the end. It is very unstable tho.
PPS. Judging by this post, I should not become a screenwriter
@Protocol 7: Thats an awesome acquisition there and the 4.1 update was spot on for updating themacmeisters QXP 4 Standard, full IE upload. So thank you very much for the discovery and upload. A tip if anyone tries the updater. Do start the Mac up with Extensions off beforehand, I made the mistake of not doing so and so had to go through the process twice after the first crash
@themacmeister: Having ATM present on Basilisk II makes no difference, sadly. I have ATM installed as a rule anyway. Upgrading to 4.1 has not helped either, if not, it has become worse. I'm now of the opinion that vers 4.x is incompatible with not only Basilisk II but with the SheepShaver too. If I'm lucky, I can get to the splashscreen as QXP 4.1 starts up on SheepShaver, after this it locks up solid. On re-boot there is always a tell-tale Xpress temp file in the "Rescued Items" folder in the Trash. I don't care if it is incompatible with SS, but I did want this for Basilisk II so its a pity. At least 3.32 works well on B2.
Also, about QXP 4.0 and the 4.1 updater, they are both IE versions, so are compatible The link to the 4.11 updater is for US versions and will not update these two to 4.11
Thanks Protocol 7!
Much appreciated!
Will installing ATM under Basilisk fix the font display issue? It really relied on ATM for any semblance of correct text display -- almost unusable without it.
PS. I went for a job at a major local newspaper recently, and they had no printer fonts available, so it was all bitmap text display, and it was horrible (and still using Quark 3.x on the PC!!)
I just got my hands on dozens of old Mac magazines and coverdisks and one of the Macworld discs had the 4.1 update. So here it is: http://www.multiupload.com/YDEUNN4SJF
The archive contains the updaters for XPress (International English) and Passport.
My version on here is 4.1 anyways
I should have it somewhere...?!
@themacmeister:
Hmmm... Do you know the whereabouts of the 4.1 updater too?
From the 4.11 Read Me:
I'll do some Googling and see if I can dig something up. You never know
[Edit] Its not looking too promising. Apparently 4.1 was a free update, but Quark mailed it out to registered users only, on CD. According to a TidBit source at the time:
I Don't recall anything controversial about Quark 4.0. Like all major XPress releases, the default file format was not compatible with 3.x, you had to specifically save it as 3.x document (and lose a mystery amount of formatting). There were issues with custom lines, and hyphenation, but it was just a matter of remembering to send the two extra files with the document. I know the 4.1 update came out almost immediately, which means there was a major issue that was fixed pronto!
PS. Quark XPress 4.11 updater available HERE -> http://main.system7today.com/software/quark/quark.html
@themacmeister:
For Windows, I have that freebie QXP 5 that was on the final Aust. PC World mag. - Its actually quite good. The QXP 6 for Mac OS X - I went through the DRM bit to register it, which took a phone call and that was OK (kind of "shades of Windows OS XP & newer"). Now, if I want to move it onto another Mac (upgrade the HD or whatever) I'm going to have to go through the phone call crap all over - AS IF that (unlikely) route will be available in x years to come. Its a pity Quark was/is so anal here. I cannot rely on this product because of this. Have they come to their senses since?
I've been using your QXP 4.0 on a 68k Mac over the last few days. Its really beautiful to use in comparison to vers. 6 on OS X. I like it more than QXP 3.x, feature wise, its uncomplicated to use, getting to advanced features quickly is easy, even for me. I'm thinking that this version was about as good as it got for Quark.
My memory is cactus. There was something about vers 4 that was maybe controversial, but can't place it - just glad it was released for 68k & PPC plus FAT
I have Quark XPress version 6 & 8 for Windows tucked away on disc somewhere -- will never use them...
I'm using Adobe CS3 at the moment (Mac & PC), and couldn't be happier.
PS. Yes, WYSIWYG were fond of full page ads
They are mainly a short run colour printer now, and probably have 6 Indigo digital presses. I remember when they bought the first model, and dues to contract stipulations, they had to buy TWO, and each came with 1 technician and 1 operator for a year. Well worth it at >AUS$1,000,000 a piece!
I do recall seeing the ads for the bureau (full page ones in Aust. MacWeek or Aust. MacUser or both, back in the early to mid-90's). There's a bit of history, right there
I think I'm beginning to understand some of that negative passion involved tho'.
You say subsequent releases got even worse? Oh woe.
I'm finding version 5 to be OK (well, stable) on PPC and I own an eBay sourced version 6 for PPC OS X, but haven't used it much... not as much as I've used 3.x over the years, anyway.
I worked for a large postscript bureau, and I can tell you that Passport was hated UNIVERSALLY, even by professionals it was designed for...
You will know the bureau, it starts with W and ends with G.
Not a worry, sorry about the delay. This is really the last stable, quality version of Quark XPress, it all goes downhill from here. Their (Quark's) belief that XPress would crank out top quality web pages was a little bit too far away from the mark
All the best for the new year as well!
@themacmeister:
Thank you and a resounding YES!

HQX arrived safely and now installed (and running) on a 68 k Mac, destined also for Basilisk II. And it has a Brit dictionary - I couldn't ask for anything more. A great success. (shudders) Just thinking of the hoops I went through trying to get !*^%#*!!! Passport to install
Cheers and thanks, I hope you have a great New Year.
It's there now - should be fine as hqx.

Hope it works for you Mike!
Uploading now - ETA 1 hour.
Also included Install Floppy image (unlocked) and Registration Floppy Disk image (unlocked). I may have used the Install floppy before, so it may come up with a default serial number and reg info. I deleted the registration info from the reg floppy, so it might not?! YMMV. This can be easily changed with Renamer for 4.0. Also, when holding option and selecting About Quark XPress, the reg info doesn't show up anyway?!?! (it does with 3.x).
Anyway standby for the download link...
40min remaining
PS. I stuffed it, then HQXed it, and it is now a manageable 82MB!!!
Sorry for my tardiness, the silly season has caught up with me, and many guests are making it difficult. I will endeavour to upload it tonight.
@themacmeister: Great - I hope it goes OK for you. Umm, if you haven't used it for a while, everything about RS has changed. The old uploader may not even be necessary. All of my afore mentioned uploads were made without it and I only have a free account with RS. I guess the most significant upload I made for here, was the BeOS iso which is several 100 Megs and AFAIK, it is still available for DL after a couple of months+ and is non-expiring. So see how it goes for you.
All the best and have a great day tomorrow. Cheers.
OK Mike, I'll use Rapidshare - sheesh!
Megaupload have been increasingly unreliable recently. I have the Rapidshare Uploader, so it should be fairly painless.
@themacmeister:
ShrinkWrap 2.1
BeOS Preview Release 230105
Apple IIGS Emulator, GUS
All of the above carry alternative rapidshare uploads I've made previosly that have as yet, not been made available for direct DL from here. Check the above links for yourself to see if they are useable (you may need to look for the alternative links on these pages). Anyway, they are are available to all here as far as I can tell. So members only? No, I really don't think so. Perhaps in the past but in the last couple of months or so, as I mentioned before, up to 500 MB file uploads and it is easy to do so for everybody.
@MikeTomTom, I have had the experience before that uploads by paid members were only available to paid members -- These may have all been above 100MB, but I can't remember.
Luckily, mediafire saves files as long as possible, and you can download multiple files at once, there is no real countdown, and they have a good upload system. I'll stick with mediafire for a while (they are free!).
It's either that or Megaupload -- whichever you prefer...
@themacmeister: Rapidshare is exclusive? [Pauline Hanson mode on] Please Explain? [Pauline Hanson mode off] - No worries. Whatever you decide suits you, is OK by me.
No trouble -- I have a rapidshare pro account, but I do not want this file to be exclusive.
I will upload 2 parts to mediafire, as I have had great success with them in the past.
Links will be up in a few days, in this thread!
