Better Download Links?

Hi all. I have been downloading various disk images (CD copies) from here, but almost all of them are being hosted on Rapidshare. The reason I'm posting about this is because Rapidshare now makes the downloads VERY SLOW. I had one that was 14 hours long (Only one-hundred forty something megabytes)! I'm hoping that everyone that uploaded games to here that are hosted on Rapidshare will change them to a different host, such as 4shared or Mediafire. Do you guys agree?

Agreed with that. Rapidshare requires users to register to get normal speed. Same goes for 4shared, where you have to register to download. MediaFire have some weakness too because last year my MF archive have suspended and all files were deleted.

Most uploads are goes to the mega.co.nz or anything else.

Upload to Max1zzz private server, as long as he can afford the space.
There are a few other private Wired servers allowing storage, if you cant set up a file server yourself.

Forget the "free" commercial sites, unless you wish to upload over and over again and suffer from poor bandwidth just the same.

My server has plenty of space, ~180GB free on the raid atm, and i have annother 320gb drive that could be added if needed

Also, as of the latest crush FTP update direct http links to files on my server can be used, a login / pass will still be required, but that could be given with the link

However, the public account has a 20kb/s speed limit, so it isn't really useable for main download links

Ya I didn't know that you had to sign up to Rapidshare to get normal speed. Rapidshare used to be so nice! Sad

This has been mentioned before, and our idea got rejected. Me and fogWraith (of MacDomain awesomeness) have actually hosted all of our stuff ourself and we wanted to do some co-hosted downloads before to help MG.

We still want to help and we have 4TB of space for hosting on our i7 with 16GB RAM server on a dedicated 100/100 fibre line.

JUST CONTACT US if you need this service, for free. This is directed at the MG crew.
It would bring up the quality and stability of this site if the downloads where hosted in some controlled form instead of the file sharing sites that are used now.

Thanks again for your kind offer, Knez. (Though I´m not MG crew.)
Is your server kdx only or are you offering some other protocols meanwhile?
Would be awesome if uploads from your server could be linked to the pages here.

We do FTP, Hotline and HTTP at the moment. But since we actually own the server and have it when we can get to it and admin it ourselfs, we can add anything we want to it protocol-wise Smile

I'll mirror what knez said (but more aimed at users)
i'll offer free hosting to anyone that wants it, with no restrictions on speed or filesize
i'm also going to raise the speed cap on the public account on my server a bit

We where thinking more on the line of uploading the files using a form when you create the page for the download, if you understand what I mean. This will mean that MG will be hosting files and the site, for more control and a better way of keeping everything up to date. No dead links etc, since the files will be integrated into the CMS. Like when you upload attachments to forum software.

You get the picture? I wont be creating user specific accouts for hotlinking to via MG, like some people did to the MacDomain FTP/Hotline before.

I am personally a big fan of 4Shared. A certain FPS legends site (and Adventure legends site) use 4Shared for all their downloads, and I have a spam-free free membership, and apart from a 20-sec wait for the ato-starting downloads... there seem to be no limits. I have downloaded 6GB in a short time, five downloads at a time, from a 30-part split file. They seem to stay up for a long time too.

It's still an external company we don't have any control of. They can take away everything whenever they feel like it etc.

I'd hate to see the Megaupload thing all over again, and that's why I feel that the best thing to do is host everything that will be on the site ourself.

I may quote myself from an earlier thread:

The very best solution would be to use an private server holding all files as a backup and distributing them to a fast hoster for the users to download the files. So you could have always a copy available and could easily restore them if one hoster disappears. But the size of MG's file collection might make it hard to set up such a server if the hard disk size does not rise again in a not too far future.

If someone is able to provide enough disk space on his server and can do disaster-prevention backups, we could use this server as background server. For fast user downloads we could upload from the server to any good sharehoster and could redistribute on another sharehoster if it becomes unusable or is shutdown.

It's just alot of work compared to uploading the files to the same wiki-page you created. We have a fast machine on a fast line, that's why I said we could do this. We are talking with balrog about everything, but no decition has been made.

Our server specs for those who are interested:
8-core i7
120gb SSD for boot and system.
2x500gb SSD in RAID for databases and web
4TB rotary (harddrive) storage for files
Runs Debian and is located in a space where we have total control over the machine (not located at a hosting company)
Connected to the net via a 100/100 fiber line with unlimited traffic

I recall fogWraith talking about the new server in the old forum.
I felt it was a tremendous effort for file storage, man power and money wise.

Today (12/17/2013) Rapidshare has finally become unusable for casual users. The download of files with size over 150 MB require now a paid account. The anonym download was very slow so far, now the free account (Standard account) has become slower, too. Seems that they try to press the free users to pay for the downloads.

They got also more pressure from the German and EU justice:
WWW.RAPIDSHARE.COM JUDGMENT - 12/17/2013 - How far do the inspection duties? (original link)

Seems that rapidshare will become a closed filehoster like some other ones did (fileserver, …) or will be closed down in a near future like hotfile.
Now we need to replace the rapidshare links with other ones (mega, ubuntuone, …).

Maybe we should start a list with all the rapidshare links, so we can go it through in the process of replacing them.

I start it with these two items:
Mysteriet på Greveholm 3: Den gamla legenden
Bananas in Pyjamas - It's Fun Time

These two games was added as the last ones after the 150MB-limit was established at rapidshare, so only premium members were able to get these.

Please complete this list.

A huge number of MG archives linked to Rapidshare, have been made by one person, mrdav. So if you'd like a list of all rapidshare links you may want to include his list to save yourself a lot of time (it includes the two you mention).

I have approx. half a dozen hosted at RS

Sorry, I was not aware of mrdav's link list in the other thread. Maybe you can post a list of your (half dozen) RS links, too. That might get handy if we need to replace all RS links.

I'll add them to a list if you start a new topic along the lines of what you alluded to in post #22. That is, a new topic requesting a list of Rapidshare hosted software linked to, via the MG. In that thread, a link to mrdav's list is all that would be required, others like myself can add to your new thread, if they feel the need to.

This thread is (or should be) more for bitch'n about how cunty Rapidshare has become as of late and what alternatives are available.

Surely you can use a more descriptive phrase for the Rapidshare website than what is actually a very important part of female anatomy.

Ok, MikeTomTom.
I started here a new thread to collect all rapidshare links on Macintosh Garden that need to be replaced. I linked to mrdav's link list there, too.
Please feel free to add the links there.
