Cannot create large enough volume/Cannot extract Space Bar

The rest of the info in this post is old. I now understand that images larger than 2GB cannot be created. However, even after loading the 9 parts of The Space Bar to a virtual volume and attempting to extract in Sheepshaver, a loading bar appears for a second but nothing happens. Also I don't know if I'll be able to extract to a different HD as there is not enough room on the one I'm keeping the files on. What can I do? Can someone upload The Space Bar for me in .sit format without being split into files?

I can't create a large enough volume to hold all 9 parts of The Space Bar, and Stuffit Expander won't extract them on the host (Windows PC) drive. It shows a loading bar after the .sit.1 file is dragged over it but nothing happens. I've already downloaded these files twice, so I can verify it's not a corrupt file, unless the links themselves are corrupt. I could be wrong though.

I've tried creating volumes both within Sheepshaver with Disk Copy (returns error: not enough space in This PC hard drive) and within the Sheepshaver GUI (never able to create drives over 1.95 GB).

How do I create a large enough image file? I would like to create one 100GB or larger. I have heard the max size for the lowest-end Mac OS 9 is 128GB.

If I try to mount a file that isn't inside a virtual Sheepshaver volume, Toast returns an I/O error with result code -36.

If someone could upload a large virtual disk image that would be cool. I need at least 5GB or so.

I can provide further details if you need them, and my system details are below.

Windows 8.1 64
2.67GHz dual core
Nvidia Geforce GT 730m

I suggest you combine and uncompress the archive without using Sheepshaver...you don't need to use it as the contents of the archives are CD disc images that are not damaged by being exposed to OS X. Just make sure you lock the images after you create them.

I have Windows 8.1 64. I have stuffit installed in both Windows and Sheepshaver, but I can't figure out how to join files. In sheepshaver, it just extracts something from the sit.1 file and doesn't recognize the other parts of the archive as archives. In windows, it just displays a loading bar and then finishes the operation without producing any results. I need to join the archive parts but I can't figure out how for the life of me.

In Windows, Stuffit Expander reports "stuffit_no_archive" and says the file does not appear to be an archive. Perhaps there is a problem with the uploaded files. Can someone upload unsplit .sit versions of the files?

@usagi9000: You can DL a 6GB HFS+ formatted image here. Look for "A bootable 6 gb hard disk image." in the 1st few chapters on that link's page. Being pre-formatted is a plus, just extract the archive and use it right away.

Its intended for use with PearPC, which I also use, but it works on SheepShaver just fine under Mac OS 8.1 to 9.0.4 -- It may also work as a secondary drive with Basilisk II under Mac OS 8.1 too (HFS+ drives on '040 Macs cannot be the start-up drive).

Though the issue is settled...
Creating a virtual drive of say 16GB for SheepShaver is not a problem.
It may be that the GUI on some hosts has a max setting of 2GB though.
2GB was HUGE for classic Macs and it may be an issue carrying larger disk images on thumb drives - USB sticks are usually formatted FAT32.

I just made a 16GB thingie for evaluation, feel free to try.

If this wont inlflate, I´ll create a RAR on my Windows box.

I am grateful for and appreciate your replies. The people here seem very friendly. I wonder if it has anything to do with being raised on Mac or habituated to Mac. Could easily be something else tho.

Anyway, there are 3 things I would like to suggest:

1. max1zzz's server downloads often time out right at the end. I've had to download a complete disk image and then restart the download at the very end from scratch about 20 times already. It would save bandwidth if the problem is fixed. I've heard it doesn't happen in Internet Explorer, but I tried IE and it reported the files to be offline. Chrome and Opera have the problem, but they're both Chromium browsers. Perhaps Mozilla would do better (Firefox), assuming it doesn't report files to be offline. You can include that in the "Hot Tips" section suggested below, if Firefox actually works. Otherwise the only way is to fix the problem on the server end.

2. (Sections 2 and 3 are about Sheepshaver.) If a Windows user (and perhaps other users) tries to mount a disk image while that image is *not* on a local volume in-emulator it returns an error result code -36. Someone asked about it in the comments for a certain game (you can find it in google search) but they were never answered, the problem was never resolved. It would be good to have this information clearly available, for example in a short section of "Hot Tips and Common Mistakes" featured on every game page on the site. There are other things that I had trouble with... for example:

3. You can mount several images at once by serially loading them into Toast. It took me some tinkering to figure it out. I bet most non-Mac users would have a hard time realizing this. It would be good to put it in the "Hot Tips" section.

There are some other issues that could be cleaned up by a "Hot Tips" section. Also, I would like to point to this page which contains a download link for a complete Sheepshaver package: http://osvirtual.net/en/macos-9-0-4-with-additional-software/

If the package is tweaked and updated (with TESTING on native systems!) it could be perfectionalized, and along with the addition of a quick and easy "Hot Tips and Common Mistakes" section, it would really streamline and make much more user-friendly the Mac emulation process (especially or at least for Windows users).

I could help out some (if I still feel like it at the time) with telling you guys about the problems I had. I just can't remember what specific problems I had or what I did to solve them... for example putting the cdenable.sys file in the Windows/SystemWOW64/drivers folder. There was another workaround for that but I forgot it. We could consolidate all the tips like that into our own guide.
