Help! Shanghai Dynasty "Could not find application working directory"

Greetings!
I'm a non-tech-savvy person but I've set up OS9 with Sheep Shaver with no problem and have a shared Unix disk. I'm trying to install Shanghai Dynasty. I've downloaded and even got as far as installing (381 items) in the Shared Folder. I've also agreed the License Terms. The game icon then mounts on the OS9 desktop. But when I double click I get 'Could not find application working directory'.

So I must be close but no cigar. What am I missing (yes, the application working directory...)?

I've also got the CD of Shanghai Second Dynasty but I can't get the disk to appear in OS9. But that's a separate question.

Advice will be much appreciated.
Steve

Yes. Do not extract, or try to use files in the shared folder. This folder should be only used for transferring items to and from the emulated hard drive.

That is; Move any file that you want to use, into an emulated hard drive first before attempting to use it. The shared folder gives bad results if trying to extract or run programs that are in this folder. Files really need to be 1st copied inside an emulated disk drive before extracting and running them.

The emulated hard drive can be the start-up disk containing the classic Mac OS or any additional mounted emulated drive - but not the shared drive.

Alternatively, if the archive you need to extract contains a CD image file, or an archived image file in general (.img, .dsk, .toast, .iso, etc); These can be extracted on the host PC and added as additional hard drives in SheepShaver's GUI before you boot up to the emulated Mac OS.

Thanks Mike, I've made more progress! Transferred and installed but now it is asking me to 'insert Shanghai Dynasty Disk'. I downloaded the game from this site. I can see something called 'Shanghai Dynasty Toast' in a folder. Any suggestions?

Looks like it wants the CD in a drive before letting you play the game.

Toast files are CD images. You can burn this to CD and mount the CD in the emulator to play the game (if your host OS is Windows, change .toast to .iso before burning).

Alternatively, if you have the .toast file inside an emulated hard drive, you can use the Virtual CD/DVD Utility from here to mount it (if its the correct type of image for it). This utility is pretty awesome at making game apps think there is an actual CD drive with a mounted CD in it.

If there's a "No-CD" patch somewhere (I don't know of one or this game), then these can come in handy. HTH

Oh, oh! Now I've lost my Unix folder on the OS9 desktop. ("Cannot be found'). I tried to put Shanghai Dynasty Toast on the GUI under the ROM and OS9 and it's gone. (Didn't really know how to 'extract' or ad as hard drive. Anyway, I can reinstall tomorrow and try again from scratch.

It's not that type of ROM. CD images are meant to be drives, like the boot drive you've used to boot up SheepShaver.
