Creating a Mac CD-ROM image file without a Mac?

Is it possible to create an image file from a Mac CD-ROM on a non-Mac PC? Then transfer the image file to the Mac via the network. The CD-ROM drive on my Cube is dead and I'm not going to have the budget for a replacement in the near future. I was wondering if there was a way to use any used Mac CD-ROMs I might get my hands on.

There is a commercial application called MacDrive that might work for you. But a used CD unit will probably be cheaper.

I believe InfraRecorder can image HFS discs; it just can't mount them. http://infrarecorder.org/

I know PowerISO can (I've used it), but it's not freeware.

If ISO is an option for you, I can confirm that IMGBurn for Windows does make perfect images of HFS CDs.
Multi volume CDs or CDs with audio partitions will not give you usable ISO images though.

I use ImgBurn exclusively for creating CD .ISO images of Mac software CD ROM's even in favor of using Toast on Mac hardware.

ImgBurn, the price is right (free) but it now comes with an unwanted payload in the form of an OpenCandy wrapper in the installer (installs browser toolbars etc). So my advice to anyone wanting to try ImgBurn, to do only the option of "Custom Install" and uncheck any dubious recommended settings.

I still use an older pre-foisterware version 2.5.0.0 of ImgBurn, which was the final version before the added toolbar installers appeared. This version can still be sourced from Old Apps

Another image burner/creator that gets good ratings here at the Garden is UltraIso, this one is not free (US$29.95) but does have a free trial period.

@24bit: Have you had any experience with Free WinISO? I haven't, but what caught my eye is this claim made on the linked page: "Free WinISO Maker is capable of converting [...] * Convert BIN/CUE to ISO". I wonder how that would pan out. Could this be the solution to an age old problem here with bin/cue files on classic Mac OS's?

[Edit] @24bit: I can see your reply to my question about "Free WinISO" when I'm logged in, but not while I'm logged out. Strange. If I try to reply to it, I get a "You're trying to reply to message that doesn't exist on the server". I've never seen that message before Wink

No, I didn´t hear about Free WinISO, Mike.
Someone should take a look. Smile
Dont have real hardware to play with atm.

@24bit: No real hardware? On holidays enjoying yourself, I hope.

I wasn't able to reply to you post until now, maybe your post was in that dreaded holding bin that grabs posts from time to time... Puzzled

... I've given "Free WinISO" a try-out. Yes, it does convert bin/cue to ISO. But it splits off the data part into the .iso and the audio tracks to separate .WAV files. All very well if I want to easily convert CD audio to .WAV, but its not what I was hoping for. No matter, it was worth taking a closer look at it.

Woo! IMGBurn works like a charm!

I picked up a used CD-ROM of the Japanese Mac version of Myst for $10. Imgburn read the CD-ROM on my Windows PC. I zipped the resulting ISO file, uploaded it to my web site, downloaded it to my Mac, and now I can play Myst in Japanese (or use it to corrupt my kids)!

I've also uploaded the zip file to Mac Orchard and added it to the Myst page. My first contribution to the orchard. Smile

Now I have a way to rescue more Japanese Mac abandonware.

ImgBurn is great. Glad to hear it'll help rescue some more Japanese software.

Speaking of which, do you have Scientific Attractive by any chance? I've always been curious to check that out. It was bundled with Japanese Power Macs back in the day.

I just bought Scientific Attractive Sample Showcase Vol. 2 at auction for about $1.50. Stay tuned for further information.

That's awesome! I see them regularly on Yahoo Auctions but buying single CDs through a deputy service gets expensive very quickly with all the shipping charges and fees added.

For me, the shipping will be about $1.60. Wink But I know what you mean. I feel the same way about great deals I might get on Ebay.

The Scientific Attractive CD arrived in the mail today!

I created an image file and verified that I can mount and read it on my Power Mac Cube running OS J1-9.2.2. I've also uploaded it to MG: http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/scientific-attractive-sample-showcase-vo...

It looks like a very interesting collection of application demos. I'm especially thrilled to find a Fortran compiler for MPW! Documentation on the disk is a mixed bag of English and Japanese. Some or all of the demos have limited functionality.

I will post the README file after I've translated it. I intend to work through the disk and post additional notes on what works, what doesn't, and which functions have been restricted, but anyone who beats me to it should feel free to update the page with what he finds.

Thanks for getting this and sharing! It's great to finally see what these discs are about.

You're welcome. I'm glad to be able to make a contribution to MG. And if I can get the Fortran compiler to work it will be a personal benefit worth many times more than what I put in.

I'll keep my eyes peeled for the Volume 1 CD.

If you're in the USA I'll send you something functional in an external firewire drive for the cost of shipping.

That is a very generous offer and would be the best solution all around. Although, I think David (papa) is currently resident in Takarazuka, Japan (click papa's name to visit his garden guestbook).

Thanks for the offer. Unfortunately, I'm in Japan.

Ultimately I probably will spring for a new drive, but since I just bought another PC besides the Cube I was given, I need to wait for both the bank account and spousal goodwill account to replenish before I indulge in much more hardware. Wink

By the way, based on your advice in the other thread I've been searching for external drive enclosures with a firewire connector. No luck so far. The MCE Technologies internal drive replacement kit you mentioned may be the only practical alternative. I'll also keep my eyes open for Cubes being auctioned as junk in hopes of doing a drive transplant.

Keep your eyes open for not only Cubes, papa. Also late model slot-loading G3 iMacs which are a lot more plentiful (compared to the Cube) and can be bought for a few yen on eBay if you don't stumble across one as a doorstop somewhere. These CD drives are compatible with the Cube's CD. Hopefully you will find a working CD/DVD drive somewhere soon.

A commercial option I use here is TransMac. It can open HFS and HFS+ disks (CDs, floppies, hard disks, dmgs etc). One nice feature is being able to extract files to the PC archived as MacBinary or BinHex. So the resource forks are kept intact. Then you can copy them across to a Mac by FTP.

It's a standalone app, no drivers to install like MacDrive. I use it a lot with Sheepshaver for getting files in and out of my hard disk images. There's a 15-day trial so you can give it a try.

I checked the site and the latest version sounds like it has dropped support for HFS. I haven't updated in a long time.

@Protocol 7: It looks as tho' both HFS & floppy support was only just dropped in the current version release of TransMac, according to its changelogs on site. They don't appear to have an old versions or "downgrade" link either, which is a shame.

you can just open the cd from sheepshaver by mounting the d drive if you have a 32 bit machine.
then just create a blank image in HFV explorer to a file size that the cd will fit on..

then when you start up sheepshaver.. just copy the files over.
that's one way
doesn't always work for some games that have copy protection or whatever I imagine.

I'm pretty sure ultra iso will let you make hfs iso's but it's not free
also when i tried out the trial it wouldn't let me save anything for some reason

I tried using toast from within sheepshaver to make an image but there wasn't an option to do that.. only to copy cd's
