mini vMac reads (Mounts as virtual drives) .img, dsk

SoftMac :reads (Mounts as virtual drives) .img , HFS
and .toast (within Toast app)

Basilisk :reads (Mounts as virtual drives) .img , HFV
and .toast (within Toast app)

SheepShaver :reads (Mounts as virtual drives) .img , HFV
and .toast (within Toast app)

but...there seems to be 2 kind or more of .img formats
example:

SoftMac .img disc image files cannot be read by Basilisk
but can be read by Sheepshaver and that's weird,

vMac img disc images (dsk) can be read by SoftMac and Sheepshaver
but cannot be read by Basilisk.

Sheepshaver can read all af them

vMac can read SoftMac and backwards
(which is helpful to transfer games directly after unstuffing them within softMac)

I've never tested .CDR format

.DMG is totally unrecognizable by any of those emulators,
but after so much trouble I found out that I use ULTRAISO (for Windows)
to convert from DMG to .ISO and burn it onto a CD with no problems

ULTRAISO is an excellent App, it also converts Mac and PlayStation games formats

.CDR is a 1-to-1 copy; ie exact duplicate. I think you can rename to .ISO and happily burn it under Win.

I THINK vMac .img disk images are of the Disk Copy v4.2 variety. You can still create these in OSX, ideally in Terminal using the hdiutil command.

All I can add is that you can also make disk images in OSX using Disk Utility, attach them to mini vMac (and the original vMac). When you start vMac it will complain that they are unreadable. You can then re-format them from within vMac. After that you can use it in both vMac and also in OSX to load it with games and apps.
I think the same is true for Basilisk disk images.
I set up 40MB, 100MB, 500MB and 4GB disk images in OSX for use in all my emulators - the OS goes on a small(ish) disk image and all the apps and games go on the 500MB or 4GB disk image - which is shared by all the emualtors (and all the OS's within each emulator, ie. the one 4GB disk image is shared by Basilisk running Mac OS 7.1, 7.5 and 8.1, also vMac running Mac OS 7.1.

That's true, .toast or .iso .or other CD ROM images can be added to the emulator's drives list like the emulated hard disk before booting it up.

I have to disagree with IIGS_USER
I just tried to mount/add a .toast file before booting up Basilisk and it doesn't work,
(I'm trying the Payback game and comanche)
it takes the file as a CD Audio and doesn't show any files
then I tried with SheepShaver and it doesn't even boot up,
(which is what it does when it doesn't recognize one of the virtual drives)
and I think I've tried this before when I started playing with Emulators including .dmg's
and they never worked. (at least not with me)

on Sheepshaver it didn't work 'cuz I forgot to plug in my External CD Drive, DUH!(me)
now it boots up and yes it recognized the .toast Payback game,
although it asks me to insert the CD (but that's not the point here)
the point is that Yes, Sheepshaver recognizes .toast
Basilisk still the same though.

I tried the same file with different extensions (.cdr, .toast, .iso, .nrg),
in all cases it works with the external way (by adding it to the emulators drives list).

minivmac 3.1.3-lx86, the precompiled Linux binary you can download from sourceforge, while running under Linux, cannot mount Apples 'Network Access.img'. The minivmac binary from sourceforge is precompiled to emulate a Macintosh Plus and the user provides a copy of their Macintosh Plus ROM. The Network Access Disk image file is a 1.44 floppy image and Macintosh Plus cannot read 1.44 floppies due to not supporting 1.44 in the ROMs (users can compile their own minivmac and thereby select to emulate a Macintosh SE FDHD, but then the compile option would need a ROM from a Macintosh SE FDHD).

That said, for 800k image files from Apple (Such as Apples Mac OS 7 installation images which are 800k image files), yes, minivmac mounts them. If you use the sourceforge minivmac and have only System 6.0 as a boot disk, have fun getting the individual Mac OS 7 disk images out of the SMI file, since SMI needs Mac OS 7, and the version of Disk Copy which can open the SMI also needs Mac OS 7.

FWIW, I haven't figured out how to access Macintosh ISO files under Linux. Lots of zero byte files tells me that the Macintosh oriented ISO file cannot be read by Linux (I cannot use the "Apple_Legacy_CD.iso" which I downloaded from links offered here on Macintosh Garden).

Recently I've realized, Mini vMac is also able to mount .cdr images if dragged onto its window (or even dragged onto its app icon).

Didn't know or expected that before, but that's a fine feature.

But I hope it works with PC version, too.

I'm willing to test some images (as time permits) under Linux, with minivmac 3.1.3-lx86 as offered by SourceForge. I do not have a real 68k Mac set up at the moment and my PMac 7500 is also unlikely to get set up, do I'd only be able to download, transport and test bins, sits, zips, images cdrs, dmgs, what have you, from other people.
