Emulators for Classic Mac

I saw an old post dating back to 2009 asking where to find c64, nes, genesis, etc, emulators and instead of resurecting an old thread I thought I would make new one.

I don't know if this is posted here but I found a site that has some emulators that run on my G3 Mac running 9.2.2. Quite a few that are better than the ones posted in the files section here. Especially Genesis emulators.

The URL is: http://www.mac-emu.net/~bannister/filemirror/

I have only been able to get the ones that are SIT compressed to work.

Here is a list with max versions I have gotten to work, and they all work VERY well.

RockNES 2.4.0 - NES emulator. Much better than iNES.
Genesis Plus 1.2 - Genesis emulator. Much better than DGen.
Frodo 4.2.2 - A very nice Commodore 64 emulator.
TGEmu 0.1.9 - Turbo Graphx 16 emulator.
Generator 0.3.6 - A pretty good Genesis emulator.

Most emulators seem to make use of a Blitter Plugin that is also available from this site. I have gotten up to Blitter 0.8.5 to work.

There is tons more stuff there that I haven't even had a chance to try yet. Hopefully someone finds this useful.

Fun fact: Frodo was created by the same guy who made Basilisk II and SheepShaver.

Don't forget that there is a Mini vMac build for Mac OS 9. You can emulate an old Mac inside of your less-old Mac:

Yeah, there's a pretty decent selection of emulators for Mac OS 9 and sometimes older. Many years ago I pimped my iMac G3 out with tons of emulators and ROMs. Those were very fun times. Quite exhilarating to squeeze every last ounce of usefulness out of that old platform (yes, still talking about years back).

These days I find it hard to imagine anybody would still use OS 9 emulators, since even the most primitive of Windows PC could way outperform an old G3 iMac. Then again, I have a room dedicated to many of the systems we all emulated on old Mac OS 9, so I don't miss emulators much.

For what it's worth, and maybe others would want to share this, but the first emulator I ever got for my Mac was Silhouette, so I could play Chrono Trigger to see if it was any good. My search-fu wasn't too good then, I didn't realize there were better programs available.

Oh yeah, the best OS 9 emulators are usually ported by Mr. Bannister. (the only exception to my knowledge is SNES9X and SixtyForce) The only way to use USB controllers is to grab Blitter Library, which is shareware. I honestly don't know if this still works. You might still be able to buy it. If not, there are some keys you can search for in the dirty places of the internet.

On a final note, stop using Generator and get Genesis Plus. Its the best of the MD emulators on OS 9.

SNES9X blows Bannister's SNES emulator out of the water and supports USB remotes without any additional software.

The modern equivalent to the BlitterLibrary is called Emulator Enhancer. It, too, is shareware, like its predecessor.

I honestly have both Generator and Genesis Plus. I usually stick with the latter, but a few games (DeCap Attack, Mickey Mouse: Castle of Illusion, etc.) seem only to run correctly in the former. The other option (and the only option for 32X and SegaCD games) would be Kega Fusion.
