Found a Power Macintosh

Got a nice (if a bit muddy) Power Macintosh 7300/200 from the dump a few days ago. It has six RAM chips installed, and the cache RAM chip. Also has USB card installed (only 2 port). Sticker on the case gives me hope, as it is an ex-University machine. Thanks to another member here (you know who you are), I have a working ADB keyboard/mouse (even tho I can probably use USB ones anyway). I also think I have a spare video adaptor, but I cannot remember seeing it for a while. The only thing I am missing is a monitor. The matching AV monitor was there, but crushed badly.

Excellent score (again!) tmm. I'm hoping to get this model once more, too. I regret giving mine away a couple of years back. I hope it goes for you and you find some interesting softwares on the drive if it hasn't been wiped. You can use any spare monitor on this if you have an adapter for the Mac port. I use a nice flat screen on my Centris 660av - using a Mac 15 pin D-Sub to VGA adapter with dip-switches.

Nice score - to find a working Power Mac in a dump is quite an achievement in itself!

Sadly, don't know if it is working. It is clean and tidy inside, will probably need a new PRAM battery tho. I ordered the adaptor/VGA cable today (can't believe I don't have a spare VGA cable anymore!

I might connect it tonight and see if it chimes correctly. The outside is covered with dried mud, but that is easily cleaned off (thankfully the grill on the top is not real, just for appearances). I replaced the case in a hurry at the dump, and the power button got caught away from the hole, but I think it is still fully functional. This model supposedly comes with 2MB VRAM default, but I would love 4MB (as I want thousands of colours at 1024x768). If anyone has some old 1MB 72pin 70ns DIMMs lying around, please let me know (pretty sure those are the specs).

Cheers everyone.

PS. It only has a 2GB HDD, so not holding out for much software to salvage Smile

2GB is huge! Well done on the salvage!

This machine is as good as I remember. Unfortunately, the power-button mechanism (inside and out) is damaged, so I am using the computer with the case off, so I can see when I am making contact with the power switch. I will replace this with a guided dowel, or something.

The machine has Canon scanning software, MS Office 2001, Omnipage SE, ClarisWorks Office (ClarisWorks 1.0?) and some good old games.

Mac has 64MB RAM, 2MB VRAM, about 42MB usable. More if I disable Norton AntiVirus Smile

Also has maximum latest OS supported (MacOS 9.1). Haven't tested network/CD, but will tonight. Going to transfer (push) some software from the iBook. Cannot wait to play SkyShadow again.

The only issue I am having is with the 6-dipswitch adaptor I am using for DB15-HD15 VGA. I can get 832x624 or whatever, and I am getting 1152x832 or something, but I would love to get 1024x768. If anyone knows the dipswitch settings for this, pls reply, or email.

Cheers.

6-dipswitch? My adapters all have 10! Did a quick google tho' and the most likely I came up with was

MAC to IBM: 1345 ON.
MAC to MULTI-SYNC: 1234 ON.
NEC to MAC: 1345 ON.

And I'm guessing here, if the above is correct, you should set it to multi-sync: 1234 ON (assuming 5 & 6 will be set to OFF). Then you should get at least a choice of screen resolutions.
So, hope that helps, TMM.

About ClarisWorks Office, selecting the apps icon and doing a "Get Info" should reveal a version number. But I do know that in Australia, ClarisWorks version 4.0 was marketed & branded as "Clarisworks Office", then later, with ClarisWorks version 5.0 the "Office" title became universal (well, at least with the UK, too). So its going to be either version 4.0x or 5.0x for this.

You are the man MTT, I have been using another guide (found a pdf via Google) but all dip switches are 3 and above (on), all below 3 off. I'll try the 1234, that should be fantastic if I can select resolutions/colours.

I did the inexcusable and lost the CD-ROM extension button (probably when I opened the case to check at the dump). Sigh! Oh well, a sharp implement will eject it if necessary.

I need a copy of Mac OS 9.0 or 9.1, will have a look on the site here, and other available servers. My 9.2 retail installer (possibly 9.2.1) complains about the Finder not having enough memory to continue. This might be a corrupt CD. Anyways, let me have a search first.

Some kind friend gave me a wide-SCSI 4.5 GB HDD, so I now have 2.5x the storage Smile

Would love another 64MB of RAM, but it appears to be hard to source now (as you would expect). Tried searching for the VRAM DIMMs, WOW, they are impossible to find for sale.

Brought the old StyleWriter 1200 in from out in the yard. It had a few leaves in it, but looks like it is working again. It takes Canon BC-01 black ink cartridges, so should be able to source more of those.

Going to try and play Sky Shadow tonight. Wish me luck!

Cheers.

hmmph, had to look somewhere else for OS9.1 installer. That mediafire folder going down was horrid.

Anyways, 9.1 retail along with updates to 9.2.2 is on TPB. FYI.

Going to test out that 4.5GB SCSI HDD tonight Smile

Also going to test OS9Helper, to see if I can install 9.2.2 on unsupported hardware (namely 7300)

I broke my 7300 Sad

Tried replacing cover with vga adaptor still plugged in, seems I have snapped the MOBO somewhere.

I put a bid on this... if you have a 7300, please overbid me!

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/321072808917?_trksid=p5197.c0.m619#ht_485wt_1521

This is now of no use to me.

Cheers.

Bummer! Is there no way you can back out from your bid, gracefully? Explain the situation to the seller/ebay? Looks like an ultimate upgrade auction, but sadly of no use to me at this point in time (don't have the hardware it could go into).

Sent a nice letter to the seller, he (thankfully) cancelled the bid -- phew!

This would be the ultimate pack for anyone with a 7300 (or the other model identical to it).

Just the RAM and the graphics card cover the price!

What did you actually snap? may still be possible to repair it (tho if it is a fracture on the pcb it may not be possible)

I feel for you, i hate to see old macs die...
