Game music tripping over itself

I've noticed when I play games such as; Harry the Handsome Executive, or Cythera that some of the music is going normal then suddenly it speeds up. Often it jumbles together and just sounds bad. Any ideas?

I run Sheepshaver with a Mac OS 8.6 rom, Newworld.

What OS? I know a few of those old ambrosia games prefer system 7.5/8. Possibly something to do with the version of quicktime or the sound manager.

Yeah, what version of Quicktime are you using? Harry doesn't like anything greater than 2.5.

I found out Quicktime is version 4.1.2. So the question is, how do I downgrade the version?

Another thing I would like to ask, how do I download games that are archived?

I found out Quicktime is version 4.1.2. So the question is, how do I downgrade the version?

If your current sheep's Mac OS supports running an earlier version of QuickTime, you can remove the QuickTime Extensions & Control Panel:
(1) Run the Extensions Manager (in Control Panels folder) to disable your installed QuickTime set. Reboot, then physically delete the disabled Extensions & Control Panel from their respective (Disabled) folders located inside the System Folder.
Or (2) manually locating the QuickTime files inside of the System Folder's Control Panels & Extensions folders, dragging them to the Trash, rebooting then deleting the Trash after the restart.

Then install the QuickTime version you need.

However, as QuickTime versions newer than 2.5 would have been installed with your current Mac OS, I'm not sure if 2.5 will install or even run correctly. You'll need to do some research or some trial & error testing. You may need to use an Old World ROM and an earlier Mac OS to get the version of QuickTime you want. (I think) QuickTime 2.5 was installed by default with Mac OS's 8.0 & 8.1

SheepShaver requires an Old World ROM to run Mac OS's pre-8.5.

I installed 2.5 successfully but Harry and Cythera both crash maybe because they require the Quicktime version that they were installed with. I also get this extension message when I boot up, "QuickTime MPEG Extension did not load. It requires QuickTime 3.0 or later." Same goes with QuickTime Musical Instruments and QuickTime PowerPlug. Do I need to delete those extensions?

Edit: I figure I better just get Mac OS 8.1 and earlier to do all this.

Your installing QuickTime 2.5 on top of a newer version of QuickTime, may not have installed all of its 2.5 parts as it would've detected newer versions of files with the same name (and left them in place). I would remove all installed QuickTime components at this point in time, and start over. That is, remove all Extensions and Control Panels with QuickTime in their file names See methods (1) & (2) above.

Then try re-installing QuickTime 2.5

When or if this fails then you'll need to address other issues regarding playing Harry and Cythera. Such as; How many colors do they run in (what is your display set to)? Do they require Game Sprockets? etc.

Well I am pretty sure it has everything to do with QuickTime at this point. Harry's music just sounds really awful now and there is something really wrong with it. If I can describe it, it's like 1 note repeating about 100 times a second.

With the music in Harry, My clamshell iBook on 9.2.2 plays one channel of music for the first playthrough before playing it normally after that.

create a new disk image for sheepshaver and install 7.5.*. Try harry in that first. Might be a sheepshaver+8.6 thing.

How do I unzip (unstuff?) the .smi.bin files I download from the old Apple website hosting OS 7.5 on a Windows 7 (64bit) computer?

Best use your emulated Mac and Stuffit Expander to process the files/remove the bin thing.
Smi reads self mouting image. Thats what it does, unless the resource was fork lost. Smile

Well, I don't know how I will get the smi files to the GUI.

You move (.sit, .bin, .hqx, etc) archives containing .smi's into the emulator's hard drive before extracting them. Once extracted in the emulated hard drive, double-click the .smi's to mount them onto the emulated desktop.

Do other traditional MIDIs work? If not, you may need to re-install QuickTime or the OS as a whole.
