Games are infected

Hello, I ran Disinfectant 3.7.1 on the folder that contains games downloaded from this site. They are all infected with nVIR A. Here is the report:

Indeed. So many of the old Mac games floating around the net are infected with that same virus.

It's always that same one!

Will these apps all work if I go ahead and "Disinfect" them?

Is there a reason why this site doesn't scan/disinfect the software they are hosting?

They should all work. I disinfected about 100 titles I downloaded here and elsewhere, and only one stopped working afterwards.

The site is a wiki, so the titles are uploaded by all sorts of different people. Some people scan for viruses and some do not.

Also, a large number of the games are leftovers from the "old" Macintosh Garden and were uploaded to the new site quickly, as-is, without even running the games. So a lot of those might be infected.

I don't think all of those games are infected on the server. I think that maybe one or two may have been infected and the virus spread to those other games. Thankfully nVIR A wasn't that big of a deal, all it does is make your make beep randomly when launching those programs(I Could be wrong about that ).

nVIR A is pretty harmless cuz u can just use disinfectant and you'll be fine!

I know for a fact that a few of my backed up games for Mac contain viruses. I am pretty sure they are the same nVirA, but I could have forgotten at this time.

There was a particularly nasty virus for Mac, I seem to recall it had a trigger date, and that it deleted directories in reverse order... I still to this day create a ZZZ directory, and I check for it every launch. It's funny how some of these little things stay with you (for more than 15 years!!).

When I get my iBook back, I am going to install Disinfectant, and also Virex 5.8 with the latest virus database I can find. Then it's SCAN TIME!!

There should be an organized effort to scan and upload clean copies of programs. And I think a field should be added to each program page that alerts if a program is clean or infected with a virus.

Goes back to the my preferred choice of uploads being un-modified images of the original install media.

Not blaming anyone, although I should never have uploaded anything with a virus, I've modified disc images to remove 170MB of demos and such, or to get it under the 400MB upload limit (to this site). In the end it's just not worth the effort, the un-modified disc images of the original install media win every time.
