Non Macintosh Software Suggestions

I have seen some people make comments about this site hosting non Macintosh software, i.e. NextSTEP, OpenSTEP and A/UX. Some have pointed out that as the name implies that it should be Mac only.

I have been guilty of this my self. I believe that those pieces of software represent an important part of Apple history.

My suggestion is that software that is relevant to Apple be allowed to be posted. Maybe a separate section of the site could be created for non-Macintosh, Apple related software. In the cases above, maybe a non-mac os section.

Or perhaps a sister site. Back when Home of the Underdogs was up and running, it was a pc abandonware site, Macintosh Garden was hosted by HotU. I think the address was macintoshgarden.hotu.com. We could do nonapple.macintoshgarden.org

Just some suggestions.

Well, there´s actually two versions of HOTU back up and running ATM;
http://www.hotud.org/
http://www.homeoftheunderdogs.net/
so the non-apple/mac side is rather well catered for. A refrase to Apple branded SW however would make an incorporation possible IMHO.
Thoughts? Smile

I believe your "apple branded sw" idea is a good one. I think we should include A/UX, Lisa OS and maybe even II/e/gs SW. Maybe the crucible is it has to be able to run on an Apple machine. Therefore NextSTEP and OpenSTEP should be removed.

Apple II software is debatable as there are a lot of sites dedicated to this already.

One thing that we should be wary of, IMHO, is some emulator packages for OSX. I have seen programs that bundle dosbox with a game in a nice little program that looks like an OSX program. I was looking for Total Annihilation and kept running into this instead of the true mac version.

In my opinion, NeXTSTEP/OPENSTEP should be kept. Though there are other places which have it. Still, many of the apps are way rarer than Mac apps.
NeXT was Steve Jobs' project, and it evolved into OS X, therefore it has a place here. Also it's pretty cool. Smile

I have two NeXT boxes (a slab and a cube), and I love them.

Speaking of emulators. I have Gus, an Apple IIGS emulator developed (then abandoned) by Apple. So I guess this would be Apple Macintosh software?

Gus is great. Runs on PPC Macs up to OS 9.2.2 - it installs Apple IIGS SSW 6 and runs progs such as Claris AppleWorks GS and HyperCard GS (with built-in 4 bit color) plus any other GS 3rd party prog.

It also runs really well on SheepShaver, which was a pleasant surprise to me.

My replacement of Gus and/or Bernie is Sweet16, but a look onto Gus would be interesting...

No "Gus" downloads show up in a quick Google search, so yes, it would be a worthwhile upload. Apparently there used to be a link to it on Emulation.net, which of course is dead now.

It isn't easy to find Gus these days, but I managed to locate a couple archived here: Link for Gus Look for "Gus.1.0d3" and "Gus.1.0d4" links on that page. "Gus.1.0d4" is what I use, I believe it was the final release of Gus.

The Apple IIGS System Software and HyperCard GS are still freely available as a download from Apple: Apple IIGS software (Apple Software Updates)

Sweet16 may be a better option, for Mac OS X, certainly.

I can post up what I have with a few screenshots tho'. Likely I can do this a bit later on in the day.
