Pretty sweet!
For the record, it seems to duplicate the content of this site. A lot of the screenshots are identical.
Not that that is a bad thing. Lord knows this place does need a backup/alternative site.
Download sections of Macintosh abandonware sites will always be more or less a copy of MacGarden since there are a only a limited number of classic apps and games. However, what makes MacGarden so valuable and unique are the accumulated experiences and links treasured in the disuccsion forums. No other website will ever be able to compete with this. What I especially like about the discussion forums of MacGarden is that they do not seem to be (completely) accessible by the Google search engine. This little privacy is really nice.
I like the simplicity of the webdesign of the new site. The simplicity enfoldes itself to real pleasure if you view it with an older browser that does not recognize screenshots.
Its a cool site(designwise) but mac garden is still my #1 Mac abandonware + old software + old-mac-and -games forum website
.
watchsmart,
Let me put the record straight...
MacHeaven was online BEFORE the new macintoshgarden.
All games and screenshots where downloaded from the original macintoshgarden, just as much of the material on this site was!
So it would be fair to say that both macheaven and macintoshgarden is/was a copy of the original macintoshgarden...
And yes, I am the owner of MacHeaven
I live about 200 meters from the original creator of macintoshgarden!
Both I and my friend Anders is VERY happy to see what macintoshgarden has become!
Since I am about to close down the www.macheaven.net site I have created a "MEGA DOWNLOAD PACK" with all downloads in one huge ZIP-file.
All downloads are in their own folder with text and screenshot.
Registration is NOT required for download...
What an excellent UI, MacHeaven has, Windman! I am sorry to hear that you are closing it down
All the best for the future.
wow your site must be getting hammered, I can't get it to load
I live about 200 meters from the original creator of macintoshgarden!
Xar.
Thanks m8!
Maybe that is a good thing... in the future when I hopefully have more spare time, I might be here more often.
I only have an interest in old Macs, 68000/68030. And mainly the b&w ones.
Not really an emulator guy, but I use them as a tool for testing and transfering software to physical mac scsi disks.
Would love to help others in this specific area.
I own like 20 of these. Plus, Classic1, Classic2, SE, SE/30, Color Classic. No 128/512... yet
Right now my effort goes to preserve my HW... recap the boards etc. It's a pain in the a-hole!
Logic board is not a problem. But the analog board... yack!
I have been trying to download the zip, but it "finishes" at 430 - 550mb of 1.2gb (shows as a completed dl, not a failed one) do you have any idea why this happens?
And nice to see someone taking the time to preserve the old compact mac's, i would love to but i lack the time (& storage space)
I have had that happen, often when a server is overloaded, it kicks the download off, but the computer takes that as meaning the file is done. I don't know why exactly.
I have updated the post with a direct link instead of an attachment.
The file can be downloaded here and is 1.2GB in size:
http://macheaven.net/MEGA_DOWNLOAD_PACK.zip
I believe it's the attachment function in phpBB that messes up huge downloads.
I also noticed a HUGE difference in download speed when using a direct link instead of an attachment.
I hope this will work better for you guys. If not, let me know!
I'm also working on "The Ultimate Disk Image for B&W Macs". It will be released in the far future. Perhaps as a torrent.
A 2GB image with all games, tools, OS versions and so on.
I have found it very useful on my physical Macs. With system picker one can just change from one OS version to another, and then play games that only work in one specific OS version.
I am from Sweden, so of course I have all OS versions in Swedish as well. Other languages are easy to add if I get image files of disks...
I will probably make some sort of simple html library of the content with screenshots etc. Pretty much as the download section on MacHeaven, but with local html files only.
So many ideas... so little time
hi, is anyone else having problems accessing either the site or the download? I can't get them to work, the site times out, and I get a "Source file could not be read" error when trying to download the zip file.
Oh, took me a while to remember.
I'm not sure about his nickname, but I believe Xar was the one taking over macintoshgarden after my friend. Making it a more dynamic page with forum etc...
My fried founded the name and had a static download page with about 300 games at the time... He then handed the site over to Xar that made it a lot better.
This is how I remember Anders telling me about it for over 3 years ago, we havn't met in a long time now.
He just got married and has a life now
IIGS, guess you are the same person that moderated the last macgarden before the hosting died?
IIGS, guess you are the same person that moderated the last macgarden before the hosting died?
Yes, along with Daxeria.
I think I remember the static pages as well, and now I remember, there was someone who asked for a new admin some years ago, and Xar got the admin job, so you're right with Anders.
I'm not sure about his nickname
Anders was "thegreenmac". (Was he, by any chance, really into gardening?)
Here are some snapshots of the first golden era: April 2001, September 2001
@IIGS_User, tgm's last news post has a working(!) link to a German version of Settlers II. We don't have that, do we?
I will probably make some sort of simple html library of the content with screenshots etc. Pretty much as the download section on MacHeaven, but with local html files only.
I hope you keep the interactive menubar! Of all the "simulated Mac desktop" website layouts, yours is by far the best I've seen.

+1 Agreed. This has to be the best I've seen, too. Very responsive and accurate.
Yes, comparing the size of the file, it seems we don't have it yet.
To complete my posting above:
Seems Xar left us as well, w/o hiring a new admin at the time, but Maedi jumped in just before the hoster of the prev site went bankrupt. He contacted Dax and me very quickly, and started the re-design of the site. Maedi & Balrog are the real admins now, while Dax and me are some kind of honor admins, with *some* admin rights only, thought.
Dax, I've download the file yet.
This file contains beta version 0.9.9b1, both 68k & PowerPC code.
I own original media of this version as well, preferred, I presume,
even if the original media I own contains 68k code only (version 1.1).
I'm guessing this problem must be related to where I am, I still cannot access the site or download the file,
i got the file ok, if people are still having problems i will throw it on my site (as a direct http download)
And i do agree, it is by far the best simulated mac site i have seen
That site is amazing. Downloaded 15 or more games in the time I would take to download 3 from here
Nice find!
Yes, now I remember it clearly. "TheGreenMac" it was...
I can't really imagine Anders as a gardener.
He is a hard core computer geek
The whole thing is a fun story though...
Me and Anders have a very good friend in common who invited us to Stockholm about 4-5 years ago. We started to talk about old memories and I mentioned that I was going to start a web page with old mac stuff. It was first at that time I heard that Anders was the founder of macgarden. Talk about a huge coincidence! Today Anders is a good programmer, so we then met a few times talking about the layout of MacHeaven, but that sort of fizzled out...
I on the other hand is not a good programmer, so I did the page myself in phpBB with static download links.
I made a pretty advanced script in VBS to help me sort everything out. Saved me a lot of time, but there was still a lot of functions on the page I wish I had.
And thank you all for complements on the menu.
It's created with pixel precision via an emulator
It's java though, so I don't believe it would work on an old mac with system 6 or 7?
But maybe the library should not be inside the image I'm creating. Rather a document file on the side...
And I actually would like to thank IIGS.
Before the old macgarden got completely spammed, you helped me in the forum.
I also downloaded a lot of games from that site that I used on my physical macs.
I believe that was about 5-6 years ago? It was about then I started to collect old mac hw. Stocking up to secure some quality time after retirement (in about 30 years).
I would have needed extra admins/developers like you IIGS on my site! Then I could have kept it running... But then again, this site is so good there is really no reason for another one like it. And most of all, this place has an active forum!
well I wish I could see the site that everyone's talking about
basically I'm getting errors that tell me that the site is taking too long to respond, and that's about as far as I get. I thought it would clear up, but still the same thing.
Seems like the server is getting hammered. I just received an email about it closing, and I wanted to check it out one last time. I wonder if it would be better to torrent the archive zip file so we can view the webpage.
Windman, the 2GB "The Ultimate Disk Image for B&W Macs" disk image sounds perfect. I look forward to seeing it!
Yes, I just send out an email to all members regarding the closedown.
I am so tierd and had such a problem sending the mail regarding to hosting mail limits, I accidentally used the to field. Luckily I sent the mail in groups of 250.
I'm such an idiot!
Regarding the server. The hosting is located in Denmark.
I am in Sweden and have no problem browsing the page.
The download speed is good too.
Maybe someone on this page can create a torrent?
I have never done it but am willing to try if necessary!?
What would be the prefered site? Piratebay?
Ok, here we go!
I uploaded this torrent on TPB:
http://thepiratebay.se/torrent/7729003
I have never made a torrent before, so I hope this works.
I'm seeding with a 10mbit upstream limit, so please seed after download!
For anyone who is in a country that blocks tpb (like me), here is a direct http download from my server:
www.max1zzz.co.uk/file_host/MEGA_DOWNLOAD_PACK.zip
I will also seed it from my server, got a theoretical 20mbp/s up
TPB torrent works great btw, it has been 13 hours and I've seeded over 40GB already.
You can't access TPB from UK?
Thanks for helping out with "a mirror link"!
Hey, thanks for torrenting this, Windman. I was having no luck with the direct link but got from TPB in 30 minutes! I'll keep seeding this. I don't have the fastest upload speed but i give seeding priority to older mac games, cheers
Thanks Windman for torrenting to free-up the server. I am in the USA and unfortunately I still cannot connect to your website ("took too long to respond"). Could it be an issue with your host?
thanks , It is working good now, seems that the server was indeed getting hammered, it's downloading at a great pace
Does the download include your model manuals as well?
No they don't.
But you may download them all from here (80mb):
www.hogmark.se/MacManuals.zip
(They will only be there for a short period of time)
It does look cool. Too bad the owner is closing it down. He did post a big download pack of all the games though: http://www.macheaven.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=969
