I need help uploading a large cache of applications to Mac Garden!

I seem to have serendipitously stumbled upon a large cache of educational games for children on another web site. The site also has many other kinds of applications, games, sound files, etc. so it's not just all educational stuff. Everything appears to be Classic Mac.

I've already uploaded a few here but there's just too much for one person to do. I can use your help uploading appropriate files to Mac Garden.

I don't know about bandwidth restrictions on the site, and right now everything is a gift for the taking. So all I'm asking that if you feel something is good enough to download, ***please return the favor and upload it to Mac Garden*** (as soon as possible).

We don't want a website like this closing it's doors because of too many hits on their bandwidth, and then none of us will be able to retrieve anything.

Wow, there's even more to that site than I first thought... if you go to the main page of the website you'll find a link to even MORE stuff. This site aught to keep many of us busy for quite a while.

First off, the ATPM links under Educational are widely available elsewhere. Secondly, a ton of the files (especially the game ones, I think) are available in some of PD software collections MCP has.

And the website in the link has *thousands* of Mac games. MCP does not have thousands of games. But that's a moot point. From the main page "The Macintosh Garden is an abandonware games archive".

I have archives of most of the stuff that's widely available -- and I can't find a lot of these there. Also such other sites disappear over time. So get them while you can.

I'll say its "a goldmine" too. What a find, Vito. I've booked marked the site and will look at it more closely shortly.

I've only looked at the Educational page you linked to so far and the D/L files all seem to be archived in ".hqx" format. So if you are using a Mozilla family browser, e.g; Firefox or Seamonkey etc Please only use the right-click of your mouse to D/L.

Why? Because as "Protocol 7" had pointed out in another thread:

There's a bug in Firefox where left-clicking a link to a hqx file destroys the header. It may be present in other browsers too.

I can confirm that left-clicking a ".hqx" file to D/L in Seamonkey did render that file useless. Its a bad bug in Mozilla related browsers. Right-click only, to save .hqx if using these browsers.

I've had a link to that site on my pages for quite awhile. There are quite a few useful files there, just be sure to search this site before uploading things; often people in their burst of enthusiasm just assume it's something this site doesn't have. And indeed many of those files are available on other sites or in the CD-ROMs section of the Old Mac Archive. Doesn't mean they shouldn't be uploaded individually...just exercise judgment.

Thanks for that information MCP. Unfortunately just finding out what your site holds can be a bit of a chore. Sorry. As an example, I'm looking for the game "Dream Wars" which I found on the associate site. I navigate to Old Mac Archive and do a Google search of your site for the game. The search comes up with nothing.

While viewing the 8 folders of the CD-ROMs section of OMA, nothing immediately jumps out at me as there being any games there. None of the folders are labeled as containing games. So are they in the MacAddict folder? Or the Assorted folder? With a little digging I found the "1000Games" while digging deeper under "Assorted".

So to find the games here is the path: Files > CD-ROMS > Assorted > 1000Games. Easy to miss? I did. Now what's on that CD? I won't know until I download it. That's OK, no problem, I'm just saying.

How about if someone wants to know what's on your MacAddict folder? Everything is catalogued using DiskTracker which is a program I don't have. So I download it, then I find out that it is shareware $30. Now I need to also learn how to use this program, and then I'll be able to find out what is archived under MacAddict.

Hey, you organize things and do things the way you want on your site. It's your site and I'm not telling you how to do things. But maybe, just maybe you'd appreciate a little feedback from someone explaining to you it's not exactly easy to find stuff on the Old Mac Archive.

As far as your link is concerned, I finally clicked on your "Links" and found a large number of terrific links, including the Associate one. When visiting OMA before I was more interested in what OMA held so I didn't click on the links. Now I realize how comprehensive your site is, one just has to take the time to navigate to every corner of the site to find out what's there.

As a side note, please excuse me for being a bit retarded when it comes to Classic software. I used Mac OS for a limited time, less than 2 years, between 1995 and 1996. From then I used Windoze from '96 until 2005 (at work) until I bought my PowerBook G4 and have been running OSX (and WinXP) up until 2 months ago. After stumbling upon Mac Garden, I dusted off my old Mac and began the process of bringing it back to life, it not having being used since '96 and down with what appeared to be a virus from back then.

So I'm not up on all the lingo and references like "ATPM links" go over my head. I may ask questions at times that appear like I'm dumb, because anyone that's been running Mac OS for all these years just KNOWS everything and they forget that someone like me is still getting up to speed on learning a "new operating system".

Well I figured out that an older version of DiskTracker is available. Now I'm just having trouble finding the "AutoTyper" so I can open the "MacAddict CD Catalog (1-98)". I've done a search for AutoTyper in the DT user manual and can't figure out how to open this catalog. I suppose I really am slow.

@Vitoarc: DiskTracker documents have the Creator Type: dTrK and the File Type: CTLG (case sensitive, four characters each, no spaces).

Using either the easy to use "Creator Changer 2.8.4" located here under the (3rd page of) Apps "C" section, or ResEdit to enter the above type changes and you should be good to go.

If you have a bunch of DiskTracker documents without File Types you can select all of their icons and drag them over onto Creator Changer's icon to batch change their File Types.

BTW, I've had time to look at the link to this archive. There are days worth of stuff to sift through when you go up into the rest of the site. Most of it is shareware/freeware and there are huge back collections of Mac web e-media (magazines) from the mid to late '90's. Lots and lots of stuff. So, a great find in my books. Thanks.

My preference would be just to make an FTP archive available, but I don't have the means, so I cobbled together something from what's available for free on the web. I'm not saying it's the greatest resource or that it has everything in existence; I'm just saying "Here's some mac crap. Maybe you can use it."

That's the short version of what I was saying. I'll add that it's a great resource and once I get DiskTracker squared away, finding things on the site will become easier.

Yes! This is a goldmine (and bookmarked). It appears to be a mirror of the old Asimov Apple II collection, or a clone of the old Asimov ftp site in an http form. See: ftp://ftp.apple.asimov.net/pub/apple_II/images/

There is some excellent software here (in disk image format) for GUS and other emulators, or actual Apple II's - Such as: Claris AppleWorks IIGS, Word Perfect GS, Wolfenstein 3D, Super Mario Brothers GS, etc. etc.
